Rebirth: Splendid Marriage in the 80s

Chapter 917: Chapter 918 Why care

Xu Linjiang saw her deep in thought, and when he found an opportunity, he avoided Ge Dejun and the others, quietly asking her.

Chiang Xiao had always trusted this uncle by marriage and thus she shared her thoughts with him.

Xu Linjiang felt somewhat puzzled.

”Little, why do you care so much about those people?”

If it’s because she feared they might encounter danger, they had already agreed to stay away, hadn’t they? Why would she still want to keep an eye on them?

Chiang Xiao had not mentioned the incident Chiang Songhai experienced in his youth, believing that the fewer people who knew about it, the safer it would be. Those who had died in the ancient tombs in the mountains—who knew if they had any descendants or relatives? If they did decide to come looking, it was impossible to guarantee they wouldn’t wind up asking about Chiang Songhai.

It wouldn’t be difficult for her to ask the same question, as in Siyang Village, it was only Chiang Songhai who often went up to Bai Gu Mountain. Others revered and feared the mountain, and only recently had people dared to go up there.

Just by asking, one could directly find information leading to Chiang Songhai.

If someone was observant and asked a few more probing questions, they could potentially extract information from him.

Therefore, it was better for as few people as possible to know about what had happened to Chiang Songhai back then. What reassured her was that although Ge Liutao had once mentioned to Grandma Ge that he had some jewelry, he never specified the details, so others likely wouldn’t think too much of it.

Hearing Xu Linjiang’s question, Chiang Xiao didn’t say much. ”Because we all received so many gifts from Bai Gu Mountain, if those people find something, who knows if it might implicate us? So, we better pay attention.”

Xu Linjiang looked at her and just smiled, ”Okay, I understand. I’ll keep a closer watch. I’ll observe more while selling chestnuts in the town these next few days.”

That was all they could do.

Chiang Xiao couldn’t find anyone to help because she was afraid her actions might instead attract unwanted attention.

The next day turned out to be sunny.

But after so many days of continuous rain, it was still somewhat dangerous to go into the mountains without waiting for the sunlight to dry things up. Moreover, after listening to Chiang Xiao’s advice, Ge Dejun and Xu Linjiang decided to postpone their trip to the mountains and first go to Siyang Village to continue discussions with Secretary Yao about the contract for the hillside.

Chiang Xiao hadn’t been back to the village for a while, so she decided to go with them to see if she could find an opportunity to give Secretary Yao a heads-up as well.

Just before leaving, Ge Xiaotong pulled her aside and whispered something to her.

”If you go back, keep an eye on the Old Chiang Family.”

Chiang Xiao’s eyes flashed, ”What’s happening with them now?”

”You really don’t worry about things!” Ge Xiaotong poked her forehead, speaking irritably, ”Have you forgotten about Song Xiyun’s incident?”

Song Xiyun, having taken Chiang Caijiao to the county town, caused a stir and ended up in detention.

”She was caught stealing with concrete evidence, what does that have to do with me?”

”Weren’t you the one who reported her to the police? Anyway, you know the character of those people from the Old Chiang Family better than I do. They have all held a grudge against you. Song Xiyun has already been released, and Ho Laidi is adamant about her son divorcing her. Chiang Baoguo also resents her for costing him his job, and without a second thought, he wants a divorce too, but your great-uncle is vehemently opposed.”

It made sense that Chiang Songtao would oppose their divorce—it was as normal as could be.

In the countryside at that time, who would get divorced?

A divorce truly meant being subjected to constant finger-pointing and gossip, which could hound them to death with accusations and whispers, preventing them from raising their heads in public.

Chiang Songtao had always been someone who cared greatly about his reputation, so how could he allow such a thing to happen in his family?

”I bet Song Xiyun won’t just sit and wait for a divorce to happen, just because they say so,” Chiang Xiao scoffed coldly.
