Rebirth: Splendid Marriage in the 80s

Chapter 929: Chapter 930: In Danger

Business at Hu Xibing’s tea shop improved quite a bit over the year.

Initially, after being pestered by Yu Chunyu for so long, he worried about how to resolve the matter. Yet, for some reason, Yu Chunyu stopped showing up for several months in a row.

On top of that, his relatives introduced him to a potential match. He went to meet the girl, they took a liking to each other, and quickly decided to get engaged.

Before long, they were married.

He even sent wedding invitations to Meng Xinian and Chiang Xiao, but at that time, Meng Xinian was away on assignment and couldn’t attend. Chiang Xiao, on the other hand, did come with her grandparents to his wedding banquet and gave him a generous red envelope.

The tea shop, with a lady of the house, appeared even livelier.

When Chiang Xiao arrived, she saw Sister-in-law Hu seeing two customers out, her belly now visibly swollen and her round face beaming with happiness.

Sister-in-law Hu wasn’t a very beautiful woman, but she had a pleasant look, and Chiang Xiao felt that she and Hu Xibing made a good-looking couple.

”Sister-in-law Hu!”

”Oh? Chiang Xiao, do come in quickly. This rain just keeps pouring down; don’t get soaked.”

”Yes, but despite the rain, I see your business is still going well. That’s impressive.”

Sister-in-law Hu smiled, ”They are regulars who like to drop by for a cup of tea when there’s nothing else to do.”

”Is Brother Hu not around?”

”He’s here, in the back. I’ll go call him.”

”No need, no need; I just came to borrow the phone. I heard my grandfather tried to call me, and I was just heading back to the village.”

Sister-in-law Hu was also particularly fond of Chiang Xiao. Hu Xibing had told her about his relationship with Meng Xinian, and also how he came to know Chiang Xiao. Sister-in-law Hu had no ulterior motives, believing that Hu Xibing treated Chiang Xiao like a sister, so she treated Chiang Xiao in the same way.

Moreover, at their wedding, the gift money Chiang Xiao gave was the most generous of all the gifts received.

”Yes, Uncle Chiang did call. Go ahead and call them back quickly.”

Chiang Xiao calling didn’t pose any concern over the phone bill for Sister-in-law Hu.

Chiang Xiao thanked her and immediately called her home in the county town.

”Grandpa, did you call me? Is something wrong?”

”Something’s come up,” Chiang Songhai had been involuntarily keeping up with the news from Guan Town on the radio for the past few days, ”Yesterday, Xinian called, saying there’s been heavy rain in Guan Town for several days. The villagers have to be relocated, and they also have to help transport supplies over there. He won’t be able to make any calls for a few days.”

Chiang Xiao was taken aback.

Chiang Songhai actually could have waited for Chiang Xiao to return before letting her know, but he was worried about her being delayed by something once back and not returning for three or four days. He also felt it was better to speak to her about this matter as early as possible, which is why he had called.

”Did he mention when he’ll be back in the provincial city?” Chiang Xiao asked.

Guan Town was quite a distance from Peace Town, but very close to Changxi Town.

She had just recently read a description of Green Wind River in Guan Town in the Huaming County Annals.

Upstream of Green Wind River, a reservoir had been built, and downstream, there were two or three small villages. The County Annals stated that Huaming County essentially had no scenic water sights; if there were any, the few villages downstream of Green Wind River were the only spots.

It also mentioned that historically there had been times when torrential rains caused the river to swell, submerging the entire village.

Remembering this sentence now, Chiang Xiao’s heart tightened.

If there were no impending dangers, there would be no need to deploy them to help the villagers relocate. But if a dangerous situation had already occurred, wouldn’t Meng Xinian and his colleagues also be in danger now?
