Chapter 742 742: The Man They Chose to Follow

The Man They Chose to Follow

”Well… damn. That wasnʼt just assigning roles. That was building a damn kingdom from the ground up.”

Johny let out a quiet breath, rubbing the back of his neck as if trying to process it all.

”Well… this is going to change everything,” he muttered, though there was a hint of excitement in his tone now.

Ronan stood still, watching Leon carefully.

Not as a minister.

But as a man witnessing a king truly take control.

His eyes narrowed slightly—not in doubt, but in recognition.

So this is it…

This is the moment he stops becoming a king… and starts being one.

Leon hadnʼt just assigned roles.

He had created structure.

Balance.

Power.

And he had placed it—

Not in nobles.

Not in strangers.

But in people he trusted completely.

A dangerous choice.

Or the strongest one possible.

A faint grin played on Riasʼs lips as she shifted ahead a step, elbows bent, hands locked across her sleeves. Between the two figures before her, her gaze slid - sharp, red, quiet - then settled on Leon once more.

Softly, she spoke - her voice carrying a hint of playfulness now - ”You held nothing back.” Yet her words paused just long enough to let silence stretch between them

Some of the women looked at each other. One paused, then another shifted her eyes. Their faces said things their voices did not.

Suddenly closer, Syra tilted her head near Kyra. A hushed voice slipped out. ”Dropped right in without warning,” she murmured. The words hung low. Not a question exactly. More like something felt too real to ignore

Kyra held her gaze on Leon.

”No,” she said quietly, ”he trusted us to stand in it.”

Her voice stayed steady. Not a trace of doubt. Just calm sureness.

Lira turned her head just a bit, strands of pale hair glowing where the sun touched them. A quiet smile tugged at one corner of her mouth.

”I was wondering when heʼd stop pretending to hold back,” she murmured.

A quiet sigh slipped from Sona near her, gaze unwavering. The moment held without rush. Stillness settled like dust after wind. Her presence marked the space more than sound ever could. Breath low, posture firm, she waited - no need to speak. Time stretched, thin and clear.

”…It suits him better like this.”

Fidgeting just a bit, Mia held back at first, weighed down by it all - yet her words cut through sharper this time.

”I… I wonʼt let him down,” she whispered, more like a thought slipping out - yet every ear caught it.

A faint smile began to grow as she received a gentle nudge from Cassidyʼs elbow.

”You wonʼt. None of us will.”

Nova stood quietly, arms at her sides, green eyes fixed on Leon. There was something steady in her gaze now. Grounded.

”He didnʼt just give us positions,” she said softly, ”he gave us purpose.”

Tsubaki straightened her posture instinctively, like a knight receiving command.

”Then we uphold it,” she said firmly.

Near the back, Lilynʼs gentle smile carried something deeper than warmth—pride.

”Our king trusts us,” she said softly, ”that alone is reason enough to stand without hesitation.”

Even the maids—Rui, Lena, Mona, Mira—stood a little straighter now. This wasnʼt just service anymore. It was belonging.

Rias watched all of them, then glanced back at Leon, her smile widening just a touch.

”…Look at them,” she said quietly. ”You didnʼt just assign them roles. You lit something in them.”

Leon glanced at her briefly.

”I never do.”

But this time—just for a moment—

there was the faintest curve at the corner of his lips.

It was subtle. Almost easy to miss. But it was there.

And that tiny shift… it didnʼt go unnoticed.

Riasʼs eyes narrowed slightly, catching it first. Not mocking—just curious. Sona tilted her head, quiet as ever, studying him like she was trying to understand what that smile meant. Even Mia, standing a little behind the others, blinked in surprise.

Leon didnʼt explain it. He didnʼt need to.

But something in the room loosened.

Just a little.

The Weight of It

The women who had been named didnʼt look overwhelmed.

They looked…

Alive.

Focused.

Ready.

Not a single one of them stepped back. Not one hesitated.

Cynthiaʼs posture straightened, calm and composed as always, but her fingers curled slightly at her sides—grounding herself, accepting the burden without a word. Aria exhaled slowly, her usual confidence settling into something sharper, more deliberate.

Kyra and Syra exchanged a glance—just a flicker—but it said everything. Weʼre in this now.

Nova rolled her shoulders once, as if testing the weight already placed on them, then gave a quiet nod to herself.

It wasnʼt excitement.

It wasnʼt pride.

This wasnʼt a gift.

It was responsibility.

And they knew it.

”Youʼre serious about this,” Aria said softly, not questioning—just confirming.

Leonʼs gaze shifted toward her, steady. ”I donʼt give roles I donʼt intend to see fulfilled.”

A small silence followed that.

Heavy. Grounded.

Real.

Cynthia spoke next, her voice calm but firm. ”Then we wonʼt fail you.”

Syra let out a light breath, half a grin forming. ”Failureʼs not really an option anymore, is it?”

Kyra didnʼt smile. ”It never was.”

And that was it.

No grand vows. No dramatic declarations.

Just quiet acceptance.

Because they trusted him.

And he trusted them.

The Unnamed

Then—

Leonʼs gaze shifted.

Slowly.

Toward the rest.

Rias.

Sona.

Lira.

Natasha.

Mia.

Cassidy.

Tsubaki.

And the maids standing behind.

The ones not yet named.

The ones still waiting.

The ones who now realized—

Their turn was coming.

The air changed again.

It wasnʼt calm anymore.

It tightened.

Anticipation.

Tension.

Curiosity.

Mia instinctively clasped her hands together, her fingers fidgeting just slightly. Cassidy stood straighter, trying to mask the flicker of nerves in her eyes. Natasha crossed her arms, but her gaze stayed locked on Leon—sharp, unblinking.

Tsubakiʼs posture was perfect, disciplined as ever… but her breath came just a little slower than usual.

Behind them, the maids exchanged quick, silent glances.

No one spoke.

Until—

Syra leaned slightly, whispering,

”Oh this is getting interesting.”

Rias smirked, her eyes glinting with amusement. ”Now we see what he does next.”

Sona didnʼt speak, but her gaze didnʼt waver. She was already thinking ahead—calculating, observing, reading every detail.

Lira folded her arms lightly beneath her chest, her expression calm… but there was a quiet intensity beneath it.

Leon leaned back into the throne.

The movement was unhurried. Controlled.

His fingers tapped once against the golden armrest.

A soft sound.

But in that silence—

It echoed.

His eyes moved across them.

Carefully.

Deliberately.

Not just looking.

Measuring.

Understanding.

Choosing.

Mia swallowed subtly under his gaze. Cassidy held her breath without realizing it. Even Rias, for all her confidence, didnʼt interrupt this time.

Because this moment—

It mattered.

And then—

A faint smile appeared.

Not the same as before.

This one carried weight.

Intent.

”Now…”

He said quietly.

”Letʼs continue.”
