Chapter 723: The Day a King Chose His Queens

The Day a King Chose His Queens

For a moment, the king disappeared.

The man remained.

”I won’t,” he said.

Outside, sunlight climbed higher, pouring through the tall dining hall windows in golden sheets. Warm light spilled across the long table, catching on polished silverware and crystal glasses. It softened the hard edges of the room—and the sharper lines of Leon’s face.

But his eyes were different now.

No longer distant.

No longer watching the world like a battlefield waiting to ignite.

His gaze had turned inward.

Then he looked up at them—truly looked this time.

Not like a ruler studying advisors.

Not like a commander measuring soldiers.

Like a man searching the faces of people he trusted.

Rias noticed the shift first.

Her crimson eyes narrowed slightly, curiosity stirring. A strand of her long red hair slipped forward as she tilted her head.

Leon drew in a slow breath.

”I decided something,” he said quietly. ”Can I tell you?”

Several brows rose at once.

Rias arched one elegantly. ”Since when do you ask permission?”

A faint smile touched Leon’s mouth.

”Since the decision involves all of you.”

That single sentence changed the atmosphere instantly.

The air tightened.

Cynthia straightened in her chair, posture sharpening with quiet alertness. Her calm black eyes studied Leon carefully, already sensing weight behind his words.

Aria gently set down her wine glass, the soft clink against the table sounding louder than it should have.

Syra leaned back in her seat, one arm draped lazily over the chair as her bright green eyes gleamed with curiosity.

”Well?” she said, a teasing note slipping into her voice. ”Now you’ve made it sound mysterious. Don’t stop halfway.”

Leon folded his hands on the table, fingers lacing together as if grounding his thoughts.

For a moment, he simply looked at them.

All of them.

Then he spoke.

”I think... you all can help me run this kingdom.”

Silence followed.

Not confusion.

Shock.

The words landed like a stone dropped into still water.

No one spoke.

Rias blinked once, clearly caught off guard.

”Help you... run it?” she repeated slowly.

”Yes.”

Nova frowned slightly, leaning forward as if she needed to hear the idea again to believe it.

”In what way?” she asked.

Leon’s voice steadied as he answered.

”Moonstone is empty,” he said. ”The structure is there—titles, positions, halls meant for ministers and advisors. But they’re hollow.”

He glanced down briefly before continuing.

”Lord Ronan told me the same thing yesterday. He said I need capable men. Ministers. Lords. Commanders to fill those seats.”

Syra snorted lightly.

”That sounds like something Ronan would say.”

Leon nodded once.

”It is.”

He paused, then added calmly,

”I rejected that idea.”

Cynthia squinted just a bit.

”Because?”

His eyes rose once more, locking with one after another around the room.

”Because I don’t need more men,” he said calmly. ”I need my women - their loyalty, their intelligence, their vision.”

A hush settled in. Stillness crept through the air.

It wasn’t silence you could lean into. This one sat heavy, like a weight just below the ribs.

Fingers pressing into the wood, Leon shifted closer across the surface. One by one, his gaze swept over them - gold catching shadows under brows, tracking hesitation more than words ever could.

”I want each of you to become a pillar of this kingdom.”

This hit harder than any of his earlier words.

A silence settled, heavy and still. Then came nothing but quiet.

A look passed between them - less about doubt, more like sensing a shift in the atmosphere. Leon’s gesture carried weight, not just empty words or warmth meant to comfort.

It was power.

Responsibility.

A spot inside the gears of a realm’s workings.

Suddenly, Syra spoke up. Back in the seat, she tucked a leg over the other, gaze sharp and green, fixed on what came next.

”You’re serious.”

Leon answered straight off. ”That’s me,” he said.

Fingers brushing the chair’s edge, Kyra spoke low, careful. Watching him close, her words took their time, quiet between breaths.

”You want us in court?”

”Yes.”

A slight shift ran through Tsubaki as she sat taller, spine aligning without thought. Her fingers came together in her lap, arranged with quiet precision, yet a thin line appeared just above her nose. The air around her stilled, caught somewhere between calm and something quieter.

”Official positions?”

”Yes.”

A quiet exhale slipped out, one she didn’t know had been trapped inside. Still watching Leon, her eyes stayed fixed, hunting - not for words - but a flicker of playfulness.

”Leon... that’s not symbolic,” she said carefully. ”That’s power.”

”That is what responsibility means,” he said, voice soft but firm.

A silence carried it forward. The line stayed unclear.

Mia moved slightly, eyes drifting to Cassidy at her side. Hesitation colored her words, a quiet uncertainty shaping each sound.

”Some of us... we’re not experienced.”

Fear had no time to take root under his watch.

”Neither had I,” he said quietly. ”Before this crown.”

Quiet as they were spoken, those words pressed down like stone. Heavy silence followed each syllable. Stillness made them stronger than shouting ever could.

Mia blinked.

Quiet settled once more inside the four walls.

That voice held no throne, just memory. A moment before doubt cracked through confidence. Not authority - recognition. Someone who’d stood empty-handed, years gone. The past clung close, shaping each word now.

Fingers pressed into the wood, Rias tilted her upper body ahead. Her forearms found the tabletop. Those red eyes - bright like fresh cuts - locked onto him without blinking.

”Say it clearly,” she demanded. ”What exactly do you want from us?”

Leon didn’t hesitate.

”I want each of you to oversee a sector.”

Now his voice stayed quiet, yet a hard edge ran underneath.

”Governance. Trade. Intelligence. Internal security. Education. Foreign diplomacy. Civil welfare. Military logistics.”

Slowly, each word drifted down onto their shoulders. Then silence followed close behind.

This wasn’t a lineup pulled from thin air, fresh off his mind.

It felt planned.

Deliberate.

Out of nowhere, Aria’s violet gaze locked on, alive with quiet curiosity. Her chin dipped just a fraction - watching him the way a player maps moves before the game begins.

”You’ve thought about this.”

A soft exhale slipped from Leon’s lips.

”Every night.”

A quiet change settled into the air after those words. The space between everyone felt different, like a door had opened without noise.

This choice did not come suddenly. It arrived after months of quiet struggle, well before words were exchanged.

Cynthia took the floor after that, speaking in a steady tone - quiet but full of quiet intent. Her words moved slowly, each one weighed before it landed.

”You’re not offering this because you love us.”

Leon answered immediately.

”No.”

Some froze, caught off guard by how straight the words came out.

Yet there was more to come.

”I’m offering it because you’re capable.”
