Chapter 245: When the Celebration Is Over, War Starts

When the Celebration Is Over, War Starts

”Our scouts inform us Vellore troops have set out for the eastern edge of our kingdom.”

Gasps echoed throughout the chamber.

”They will arrive in our lands in five days. According to current projections, their forces outnumber our deployed eastern division. In addition, the lay of the land in that border works in their favor—open plains and tall ridges render our defensive positions less secure.”

The nobles shifted uncomfortably in their seats, the weight of the implications only just sinking in.

Natasha went on, unflinching.

”Our reinforcements—currently stationed farther west and south—take at least seven days to be fully mobilized and brought to the eastern front. If our deployment does not start at once, the Vellore army will capture key ground ahead of our men.”

Having finished, she let the scroll down slowly and took a step back without saying anything.

The silence that came afterwards was no longer urgent—it was oppressive. A silence that pressed upon every chest, heavy with unspoken truth, mutual fears, and the sound of a future none of them had been brave enough to speak out until today.

Each dignified face turned, eyes darting towards one another, looking for reassurance, looking for denial—but seeing only reflection of their own fear.

Murmurs had almost erupted again, whispers curling at the edges of self-control—but no one spoke now.

”This is the information we have for the moment,” Queen Natasha declared, her voice a clean final note. With calculated step, she retreated behind the throne, each movement infused with purpose.

The King nodded his head once.

Then he stood up.

”Ten years ago, we battled Vellore and emerged victorious,” he started, his voice lower, stronger, calmer, like steel sharpened from its scabbard. ”We made peace, yes. But peace—genuine peace—is tenuous. And again, once more, darkness stirs in our shadowed gates.”

There was a silence that swept through the throne room.

He extended a hand and pointed beyond the assembly, his finger firm as a knife.

”I ask each of you—no,” he corrected himself, voice sharpening, ”I command each noble house. Offer your soldiers. Your resources. Your loyalty. This kingdom is not mine alone. It belongs to all of us. So protect it. Protect your homes. Protect Moonstone.”

His words rang in the chamber, sinking deep into the hearts of those listening.

He granted an interval—sufficient for his proclamation to come home to roost, like a thunderhead reluctant to move on.

Then his eye turned, focusing on one of the three most influential men present.

”Duke Edric Starlight.”

The court shifted with his gaze, eyes raking in the direction of the lean, serious man whose duchy touched the eastern front—where the initial blow could strike.

Your lands border the danger. The East will be the first to go up in flames if we fail,” the King went on. ”Until you get royal reinforcements, you are the first line of defense. Hold them off. Dally them. Do not allow them to pass.

Edric advanced, calm and unflinching. ”Yes, Your Majesty,” he spoke, bowing his head low. Then, in voice of tempered steel, he continued, ”It shall be as you will. I swear on my name and blood—the East shall hold.”

”Good.” The King nodded once, content.

Then his gaze switched again—this time to the south and west of the kingdom.

”Duke Leon. Duchess Nova.

At their names, the both rose together. Regal, but with the edge of preparedness.

”Your borders face the southern and western sides. We fear Vellore will challenge us on more than one front,” the King stated, his tone serious. ”You are to take charge of all mustering points along your frontiers. I have already affixed the royal signature—supporting troops will follow shortly.”

Leon and Nova bowed together. ”We hear you. We shall obey your command,” they said in tandem.

Their statements were not empty. There was no facade in their voices—just the earthy assurance of faithful vassals, willing to defend their country with flames if necessary.

The King’s eyes moved over all three of the nobles standing there now—Edric, Leon, Nova—and then over the assembled court.

”I desire the three of you returned to your duchies come dawn,” he ordered, no longer a ruler, but a commander. ”This is no request. It is a command. Summon your banners. Prepare your vassals. The fate of Moonstone is not on my back alone—it is on yours too.”

There was a moment.

And then he spoke, colder than he had before—like winter steel:

”This is not a suggestion. It is a command.”

The Dukes inclined deeply. ”Yes, Your Majesty.”

The other lords and ladies repeated the vow, voices blending in stern unison. ”Yes, Your Majesty!”

Suddenly, the tension dissolved into motion. Courtiers beckoned guards. Officers saluted. The clanging of armored heels echoed off marble as the council moved towards implementation.

The King faced the court again, his face unchanging.

”Go back to your lands. Start your preparations immediately. The festivals are done. The wine has gone dry. The music is mute.” His voice fell to a low, steady growl. ”Now steel and war cries are the time for us.”

And he stepped down from the dais.

He walked down the steps, cloak flowing behind him, passing through a tunnel of knights and nobles standing firm with new resolve.

Queen Natasha trailed after, her tread light but firm, her presence powerful in its stillness.

As they moved past, Leon’s eyes rose—and for one moment of breathing, Natasha’s had met his. A quiet nod had flashed between them. A flash of memory. A moment of unspoken comprehension. And then it was lost.

The great doors closed on the royal couple with a final, booming crash.

A new book had opened.

And the war drums had begun their beat.

The King walked with quiet strength, surrounded by walls of loyalty and apprehension. Behind him, the waves of urgency rippled through the one-time celebratory court. The Queen stood by his side, her eyes like a drawn dagger.

As they walked by, Leon caught her eye once again. And for a second time, a silent, lingering nod.

Then the Queen broke away, and the moment was gone.

In the silence that ensued, the throne room cleared—not with the dying echoes of triumph, but with the soundless roll of war-bound boots.

Strategies started to unfurl in whispers. Allegiances were reasserted. Iron and determination flavored the air.

The season of songs had passed.

And in its place, the battlefield beckoned.
