Chapter 225: Warmth After a Lifetime of ColdThe palis wood door shut behind them

Warmth After a Lifetime of Cold

The palis wood door shut behind them with a soft, positive click—a solitary sound that closed the world outside. In the space of a heartbeat, palace, court, prying eyes and heavy crowns—all dissolved.

Silence unfolded in its stead.

Warmth held sway here, within this room, like an underground kingdom. Candlelight poured golden pools on the floor, playing softly against walls shrouded in soft darkness. The fire spat low in the distance, its light a shifting beam, as the night breeze whispered softly through the open balcony, waving past sheer curtains like a phantom of liberty.

Sona blinked slowly.

Her silver-white locks outlined her face, loose strands dancing in candlelight as if made of moonlight itself. Her cheeks still flushed, her breathing soft, but her chest rose and fell with something unnamed—a burden lifting, something readjusting. The space around her, this great hall she had long held in favor as Queen, felt... unrecognizable.

Or rather, felt unrecognizable in not feeling cold anymore.

She’d been living here for years, hadn’t she? Seated on that pillow-embroidered chaise by the fire, crossed those marble floors, rested her head on the broad canopy of that bed covered in midnight-blue silks. And yet, never once had it really been hers.

Not now.

Plush red drapes at the balcony’s edge rippled, forming puddles of discarded royal robes at their bases. Moonlight streamed in unrestrictedly, silver ribbons caressing the polished floor, while softly glowing spheres drifted above—kept suspended by delicate magic, dancing like fireflies in a dream.

And around it all, imposing and static, stood the bed, magnificent and divine. Its ebony headboard, carved with precision divine, held twin moons and rose patterns etched on it. Silks over the bed flowed as falling stars, and the plum and cream pillows were set with too much care, as if in anticipation of the regal and the untouchable.

Yet none of it had ever belonged to her.

Not until now.

Leon set her down carefully, his powerful arms not wanting to let her go even when her feet hit the ground. For an instant, he didn’t move, his body covering hers, his breath a slow cadence by her ear.

She didn’t back away.

She just stood there, her eyes sweeping slowly over the room—as though seeing it for the first time.

Her voice sounded softly, little more than the whisper of the wind.

”Leon... I’ve lived here for years,” Sona told him, her voice so thin and treacherous, as if squeezed from very far inside. ”But it never really felt like mine.”

She faced him, silver lashes making soft shadows on her cheeks. ”This room... always felt cold. Empty. Like I was just passing through. A visitor in my own life.”

Her light, probing fingers brushed against the vee of his chest. The heat beneath his tunic pulled her closer, rooting her in the moment. Her voice shook, even softer.

”But now... with you here tonight...” She raised her gaze to his. ”I don’t know why, but... this room feels different. Alive. It’s as if it’s breathing again.”

Leon smiled, his amber eyes shining like fire trapped in amber. He raised his hand to her face, his thumb tracing the curve of her cheek. His touch was light, worshipful.

”Then let me remain,” he whispered, voice low and even, as if reciting a promise. ”Let me be the heat that never departs. So you’re never cold anymore. So you’re never alone, love.

Her heart skipped at those words—my love—as if it had waited its entire lifetime to hear them.

Something within her changed. A smile, tentative but genuine, unfurled on her lips. It shook at the edges, like a flower opening in frost.

ou always say the right things...” she whispered, her eyes shimmering with a familiar warmth—one that only he had ever been able to awaken in her. ”It makes me feel like we’re still just kids.”

In that quiet moment, suspended between firelight and moonlight, the room—so often cold and grand—finally felt like home.

”I don’t mean to,” he smiled softly, sweeping a knuckle down her cheek. ”I say only what I feel.”

His eyes locked with hers with unreserved tenderness, and the way she looked back—eyes bright, lips tipped up in a small smile—told him that she felt it too.

He leaned in, brushing his lips to hers—featherlight at the beginning, as if testing a memory. Her lashes fluttered as they made contact, her heart skipping a beat in reaction. The kiss deepened once, then twice. He drew her closer, one arm wrapped around her waist and holding on tightly, as if release wasn’t on the cards.

”You brought me all this distance... and you continue to carry me,” she breathed against his mouth, her voice a fragile thread of enchantment.

Leon’s laughter was gentle, full of mischief and love. ”If you’d like,” he said, his eyes glinting with amusement, ”I’d carry you through flames. Through the depths of hell. Through your tantrums royal and otherwise too. Carrying you isn’t burdensome, Sona. It’s an honor I’m proud of.”

His palm wandered lower, slipping over the curve of her hips until it found her ass. With a gentle squeeze, firm and playful, he teased, ”Especially when the view’s this good.”

”Mmh!” Sona gasped into his mouth, blushing as heat flooded her cheeks. She gave his chest a half-hearted push, but her laughter betrayed her. ”You... you’re impossible.”

Leon only grinned, unrepentant. ”I’ve heard that before. The others got used to it.”

She blinked. ”The others?”

He tilted his head, lowering his voice into a playful murmur. ”My other wives.”

Her breath caught. ”I don’t know how they handled you...”

”They didn’t. I simply wore them down until they capitulated,” he told her with a grin. ”And now... it’s your turn to accommodate me. After all...” He leaned in, his voice softer, warmer. ”You are one of them now, aren’t you, my love?”

Her heart leaped. The term wife—uttered in that low, playful tone of his—sent her chest skipping. She gazed up at him, flushed and panting, but smiling nonetheless.

Then he kissed her once more.

Slower. Deeper.

The world contracted to the space between their lips, their breath, their heat. His fingers moved down her spine, cradling her upward until her legs wrapped around his waist of their own accord. Her body dissolved into his, molding like a piece long sought. The warmth of his chest against her hands, the firm support of his arms—she held on to everything.

He started to walk to the bed, holding her effortlessly, every step forcing her closer to him. Her breathing caught, every movement coursing through her vertebrae a shiver.

The gentle caress of the silk rug muffled their footsteps. The air between them vibrated with unspoken tension, heavy with withheld need and love.

As they stood by the bed edge, both stopped. Her eyes scoured his, staring and wide, her heart beating frantically like a caged bird. His look met hers with unyielding attention—his breath warm, deep, and slow against her face.

Not breaking that stare, Leon eased her onto the bed.

The smooth, cool sheets whispered beneath her, a soft susurration like wings unfolding. Pillows enveloped her shape as she settled into the softness of the mattress. Her silver hair flowed about her, shining in the candlelight, threads glinting like moonlight on satin.

He didn’t stir immediately.

Leon loomed over her, quiet.

Observing.

His golden eyes followed the tender rise and fall of her chest, the gentle flush spreading on her cheeks, the parted lips still shaking with their kiss. She resembled a dream fashioned out of starlight—divine, otherworldly. And yet, there was a whispered temptation about her waiting. The manner in which her body lay open beneath him, shivering with need and trust, awakened something ancient in him.

Candlelight danced over the room, illuminating her contours in gold-lit shadows. The air was redolent with lavender and jasmine, but beneath it all was hers—the scent which always began to unravel him. Lilies soft, red wine’s taint, and something sweetly Sona. It clung to the bedclothes. It clung to him.

And it was his absolute favorite scent in the world.

He sat down carefully, his voice gentle and adoring.

”Tonight, you are mine. And I am yours—not tonight alone, Sona... but for always.”

His words weren’t practiced. They weren’t refined.

But they slammed her like a tempest.

Her heart leapt, thudded, then staggered into a beat too ferocious to be bound.

Leon’s hand stroked her cheek, his touch warm and solid as he leaned in to kiss her again. This one was soft—more a touch of breath than pressure—a promise made manifest. Her breath hitched in her throat. Under the sheer silk of her dress, her nipples firmed, breasts swelling in slow, yearning tension.

She placed her hand on his chest, palm over breastbone. His heart greeted her fingertips—firm and steady, beating with need and determination.

The kiss grew more intense for a moment, then he pulled away, hardly far enough to take a breath. Their foreheads collided, breaths entwined. His voice was softer this time, near pleading.

”Are you sure, Sona?”

Her lashes slowly rose, confusion dancing in her eyes, as if questioning why in the world he would even wonder.

He looked into her eyes, golden eyes fierce but delicate.

”If we take this step... there’s no turning back,” he stated. ”You’ll be mine—entirely. And if anyone would try to come between us—” his tone grew menacing, soft with threat, ”—then their demise will not be kind.”

Her heart beat harder. She did not blink. Did not glance away.

Rather, her hand went up to cup his face.

”I’ve said it,” she breathed. ”I love you. I want you. And if anybody attempts to get in the way... it won’t be you who has to guard us. It’ll be me. I’ll kill them myself.”

There was flame in her voice. Wild. Unwavering. Hers.

Leon blinked at her for a moment, caught off guard by the ferocity in her voice. Then gradually, a smile spread across his lips—slow, deep, awed.

Her confidence was returning. The fire in her spirit no longer dulled by years of suppression.

”I’ve waited too long to hesitate now,” she added, breath hitching. ”Don’t make me wait any longer... make me yours. Complete me.”

His hand cupped the back of her neck, thumb stroking her jaw as if memorizing her.

”I never wanted a protector,” he whispered. ”Never needed a shield. I wanted a wife who could just live... someone who could smile, laugh, breathe freely. You don’t have to protect me, Sona. Just stay. Be with me. Laugh with me. Live again.”

She trembled at the smile as tears tickled the edges of her eyes. But she nodded.

”Then I will. I’m yours, Leon. All of me.”

He kissed her once more, no longer gentle—this one more intense, filled with feeling. His mouth worked against hers with need and respect, filling every contact with years of quiet. Her hands burrowed into his hair. Her legs curled around his hips, silk dress whispering like falling rain.

”Mnnhh...”
