Chapter 205: Where the Moonlight Falls

Where the Moonlight Falls

”Now that Her Highness has seen fit to bless us with her presence,” the master of ceremonies declared, his voice unshakeable and imbued with centuries of precedent, ”.so let us proceed with the age forthcoming ceremonial occasion.”

A ripple of excitement ran through the banquet court.

Chairs were pushed back in a solemn quiet. Silks rustled as nobles moved, not in impatience—but in wonder. Held breaths. Piercing eyes. All movement became suspended together, attracted to the center of the courtyard.

High above them, the golden lanterns that hung under the dome of the open sky glowed softly—not with flame, but with something else. They throbbed with ancient mana, reacting to the reverence that now covered the night.

The silence grew heavy. Every gaze ascended to the royal dais.

The chamberlain moved forward, arm held out in ceremonial form toward the center of the courtyard.

”In the tradition of ancient ritual... I beg Your Highness, Princess Lira Moonlight,” he announced, his voice rising like a charm, ”to come forward and stand beneath the eyes of the twin moons.”

At which words, the lanterns darkened—yielding to a power greater than flame. An expectant silence swept deeper through the court, as if the air itself was holding its breath.

Princess Lira bent her head once in courtesy. Then, toward the master of ceremonies, she hesitated—for one beat—and glanced back at her parents.

At her father, the great King on his crescent throne.

Next to him sat at his mother, the tranquil Queen.

King Aurelian’s face did not change—his visage a statuesque figure of restraint and authority. Queen Sona, however, always ready, gave the soft, almost imperceptible inclination of her head.

Encouragement.

Pride.

With the blessing of her lineage—not age—Princess Lira raised her head. Her gaze met the unyielding stare of her father, then relaxed at the quiet warmth in her mother’s eyes. That nod was more than a permission. It was a blessing. A silent vow: You are prepared.

Lira bowed her head in acceptance.

And then she descended.

Every movement was as fluid as remembered music in the heart. Executed in endless sleepless nights—yet now, did not feel executed. It felt predestined.

She moved down from the dais, the hem of her gown trailing behind her like a liquid aurora. Her footsteps were quiet, deliberate, each taking a breath from the court. She did not walk—she moved. Her silver-white locks glinted in the lanternlight, capturing whispers of wind and wonder alike.

In the middle of the courtyard, she hesitated before a broad, pale disk carved into the marble—an ancient sigil shining softly in moonlight. Her gown rustled over the stone, leaving trails of silver and blue behind. She stepped over the holy mark and settled at its center—right under the twin moons, directly within sight of the thrones.

Silence again fell—darker this time, like a compressed breath over the kingdom.

When she ceased, the material of her gown lay softly around her feet like water at rest.

She stood by herself.

The announcer turned once more, his voice slicing through the silence like a toll of destiny:

”Now that the Princess takes her position...

Let the ceremony begin—and let the holy ritual begin.”

And the world complied.

The murmurs ceased.

A hush profounder than reverence covered the garden.

Then—two staccato claps.

The chamberlain lifted hands and clap. Once. Twice.

Behind the gathered nobles, forms appeared. Silent. Calculated.

Along the courtyard peripheries, robed servants moved forward with somber procession, each dressed in twilight-grey. They walked as shadows granted purpose—fast, respectful.

They carried in their arms objects shrouded in immaculate white silk—mirrors.

Dozens of them.

Some small enough to rest within a child’s hand. Others tall, majestic, framed in dark obsidian wood. Each glowed softly, untroubled by time, buffed to heavenly smoothness.

The chamberlain spoke—deliberate, ritual:

”Set the mirrors.

Let the mirrors be set.

Let the moons be trapped.

Let the sky light fall only where the heavens decree.”

The servants moved as an orchestra responds to its leader.

With skillful ease, they spread out in the courtyard. Each knelt upon velvet cushions, placing their mirrors over invisible markings carved into stone—tokens laid out long ago tonight.

They moved with silence. With intent.

Some mirrors towered, commanding attention. Some bent like leaves of silver, curved delicately and pitched at precise angles.

Each was not so much placed—but aligned.

Not towards the guests. Not towards the thrones.

Towards the sky.

Towards the twin moons.

A silent metamorphosis occurred.

One by one, each glass face settled into place, catching centuries-old strands of moonlight.

That which followed was not mere reflection—but ritual.

A synthesis of alchemy, astronomy, and ancient art.

Light started to dance.

A web of silver beams interwove across the courtyard—moving, delicate, alive.

The mirrors curved and folded the moonlight using sacred geometry: zig-zagging, cascading, spiraling inward.

A shining pathway.

A single intention.

To the girl in the center.

Princess Lira remained completely still.

Not from fear—but from knowing.

She had prepared for this. Practiced for this.

It was no surprise.

It was destiny.

Her serene face told it all.

She knew every moment before it came—the beat of the ritual, the beat of timing.

Every movement since childhood rehearsed.

There was no shakiness in her.

Only stillness.

Only awe.

And finally, the final one was removed.

A servant approached and set the final mirror.

Then moved back quietly.

The announcer whispered and bowed slightly:

”Begin alignment.”

A cue.

An individual servant near the arc’s end adjusted a mirror with a thin rod—one degree only.

And the world shifted.

A thin strip of silver moonlight cut the air.

It hit the first mirror, then bounced—alive, intentional—from one to the next.

Each surface reflected and deflected the light in beautiful harmony.

Until—

The last servant arrived, carrying the most diminutive mirror—smaller than the palm of his hand.

Breath suspended and fingers steady, he set it at the edge of the courtyard, angled carefully to the sky.

And then in an instant silence...

The light appeared.

It started as a ripple—small waves of glints splashing through air, stone, and silk.

Reflections jumped like threads of silver from mirror to mirror, faster and brighter—

Until they reached their midpoint.

It hit the center.

Princess Lira.

Moonlight shone on her.

Not softly. Not gently.

It flooded her.

A silver beam, flawless and unbroken, poured over her figure.

Her silver-white hair ignited under it—gleaming like woven starlight.

Her gown, sewn in constellations, shimmered as if the heavens themselves had stirred awake.

Not just illuminated—

But radiant.

Her dress glittered like frost etched across crystal.

Her hair blazed with moonfire.

And her face—pale, serene, still—

Transformed.

As though a goddess now stood where once a girl had walked.

Her eyes stayed closed. Her lips parted with a gentle breath.

The whole courtyard gasped.

A shared wonder, too great for sound.

Eyes opened wide.

Breathless.

For one moment, she did not seem mortal.

She seemed divine.

As if the moon herself had stepped down into a girl’s body and breathed:

You are mine.

All the souls in that courtyard—from servants to lords—gazed in wordless wonder.

Because before them. stood something not quite mortal.

The chamberlain spoke—now softly, voice like prayer.

”Let the moon grant its blessing.”

”Now,” the announcer intoned, almost in awe, ”let us all close our eyes.”

Each one did so, one by one.

Eyes closed.

Heads dipped.

Palms laid over hearts.

The King.

The Queen.

The Dukes.

The Court.

All closed their eyes.
