Chapter 221: Moonlit kiss

Moonlit kiss

”Leon...” she whispered, her voice so light it hardly disturbed the air—so quiet that the night seemed to be holding its breath too, fearing any louder noise would break the delicate silence between them.

He replied with no words.

Instead, his arm shifted slightly, drawing her closer with a quiet, instinctive motion. It wasn’t forceful—just natural, protective. A deep, soothing hum rose from his chest, ”HMMM” more sensation than sound. Low and warm, it rippled through her body like a heartbeat in the dark. It wasn’t speech, but it spoke volumes.

A tender vibration that whispered: I’m here. I’m not going anywhere and listening you.

Sona slowly turned her head, her silken locks brushing across his shoulder like the touch of a feather. Just enough to look into his eyes.

Above him, moonlight poured down through the tossing branches like liquid silver, cloaking the world in a holy silence. It touched his face without touching—sharp cut of jaw, shadowed beard, flaring golden eyes. In it, he seemed both unreal and heartbreakingly mortal.

There was no distance in his eyes. No caution born of consequence. No barrier of titles or of blood.

He regarded her not as a queen to be commanded, nor as a woman bound by obligation.

But as Sona.

Only Sona.

And in the silence that followed, she felt it—the jagged pain of a love laid low. The kind that had lived under the surface in her bones, vibrated beneath every practiced smile she had ever worn in palace corridors. The kind that had waited. Suffered. Survived.

He wasn’t holding her out of duty.

He was holding her because he must.

Because he always had to.

Her lips parted, trembling under the burden of too many unshed tears, of too many nights spent concealing what she really needed.

”Leon... please.”

Her voice broke, tender and pained, like a china cup on the verge of breaking. ”Take me away from everything. From the king. From the palace. From this falsehood... and from this existence. From pretending.”

Her eyes rose, meeting his. Those piercing ocean-blue eyes, normally calm and unruffled, now sparkled with raw emotion, tears clinging to her lashes. ”I don’t want this life anymore. I just... I just want to live with you.”

A breath escaped Leon, silently, his chest rising and falling as if her words had expelled the air from his lungs. They resonated in his heart like thunder in a valley—unmistakable, inescapable.

He gazed at her, stunned and awed, then smiled. Not any smile—but his. Quiet. Unwavering. Unshakeable. The type of smile that convinced you even when the world crumbled around you.

”I will,” he said, his voice a gentle murmur that curled around her like a vow. ”Of course I will.”

Her lips parted, taken aback by the serenity of conviction in his tone. But before she had a chance to speak, he drew her closer into his arms, his eyes fixed on hers— firm, unflinching.

”You know... I’ve loved you for a long time too. Since we were kids.”

Her breath caught. Her heart missed a beat.

”Never told you,” He went on, a roughened edge creeping into his voice, ”because I was afraid. Afraid I’d destroy what we shared. That you’d see me differently. That I’d lose you for good.”

His hand came up, fingers shaking ever so slightly as they pushed a silvery lock of hair from her cheek, pushing it gently behind her ear.

”Then you married another man,” he breathed. ”And I had given up hope. I told myself it was finished. That I was just your friend... your shadow.”

There was a silent moment between them. His thumb rested against her jaw, stroking the gentle skin as if to anchor himself in this fairy tale, impossible second.

”But not this time. I won’t let fear take what I’ve always desired. I won’t make that error again.”

His golden eyes, hard and gentle at the same time, scanned hers like a man holding fast to the only thing that ever mattered.

”I love you, Sona. With every fiber of my being. And from this moment until the end of time... you’re mine. I’ll never let you leave me now.”

She didn’t budge. Didn’t breathe. Just gazed at him, her heart thudding in her throat, suspended between shock and awe. His admission sang through her ears like a bedtime lullaby she’d always yearned to hear.

Then, hesitantly, her lips twitched upwards into a smile. A trembling, radiant smile that burst like sunrise through the tempest. Tears flowed freely down her cheeks, but they shone—not with sadness, but with inexpressible happiness.

”You idiot...” she whispered.

He blinked. ”Huh?”

She let out a soft, tearful laugh, her voice low and bittersweet. Then, whispering tenderly, ”Idiot... If I didn’t have the courage to admit my feelings, why didn’t you?”

Leon’s eyes went wide, a flash of guilt crossing his face. But he had no time to say anything, for she leaned toward him, her forehead lightly touching his. Their breaths mixed, warm and unsteady under the pale, silver light.

If you had.” she whispered, her voice little more than a breath, ”perhaps our tale might have turned out differently.”

He smiled—a gentle, wistful lift of his lips, tinged with regret and muted shame, but underlying it all was a stubborn resolve not to make the same error. Shaking his head gently, he breathed, ”Then let’s craft a different one now. One in which I never released you.

Her heart pounded fiercely against her ribs. She did not think, simply reached for his hand, and he reached back for hers. Their fingers intertwined easily, as if they’d been doing so forever—two halves of the same puzzle finally coming together after all those years of waiting.

She raised her eyes back to his, and this time there was no uncertainty. Only truth. Raw, fierce, and naked.

”Then take me, Leon,” she breathed, voice low and shuddery, laced with vulnerability. ”Let me be yours... not as a queen, but as a woman. Loved. Wanted. Chosen.”

His gaze fell to her lips—soft, parted, vulnerable. A shiver ran through him. Her words had touched something long and deep.

”Sona...” he whispered, but the rest never escaped his lips.

Because his attention fell on her pliant red lips once more.

And this time... he leaned in.

Sona’s breath caught, suspended between hope and incredulity. Her heart beat, a drum in her head, as her eyelids gradually drifted shut. Her eyelashes brushed her cheeks like gentle wings. Her fingers closed over his sleeve, holding him as if the world itself would disappear if she released him.

”Leon...” she breathed, voice shaking, ”Please...”

That one word—quivering, aching—shattered the last strand of control within him.

His hand cradled the side of her face, thumb stroking softly over her skin. And then, in a husky moment of stillness that seemed to hang suspended between them like a pre-storm calm, he bridged the space.

And kissed her.

Their mouths touched gently at first, a breath of touch, a respectful and delicate gentleness, as if a man was in fear of shattering the one thing he’d desired all his life. Her mouth was warm, quivering, tasting faintly of tears and something overwhelmingly sweet.

A soft gasp escaped her, and that sound did him in.

His other arm came around her waist and brought her close to him as the kiss intensified, became more bold—still with a tenderness that left her knees shaking. Their lips crawled over each other slowly, learning from each other with hesitant awe and hungry desperation all at the same time.

She moaned softly, her hand curling around the nape of his neck. Her lips drew farther apart, a silent invitation to come in. Their breaths became twisted together, noses touching, and the world dissolved around them.

Time was no longer relevant. Only the heat of their bodies, the racing of hearts, the unspoken vows etched in every stolen breath.

He kissed her like she was all he’d ever lost... and all he never imagined he could have.

And then—he kissed her.

Soft. Slow. Deep.

His mouth caressed hers like a breath held between heartbeats—trembling for only an instant before taking hers completely. No hurry, no urgency. Just years of yearning unwinding into one silent, desperate breath.

She shook in his arms, heat spreading in her chest and from there to the tips of her fingers. Her breath caught as she brought her hand up to hold his jaw, her fingertips sweeping across the rough border of his stubble. The other grasped the edge of his tunic, holding on for dear life—as if to ever release him would be to wake up from a dream she never wanted to leave.

His arm wrapped around her waist, keeping her close, rooting her in the moment. Their bodies fit together in wordless familiarity, shaped by years of wordless longing. Their lips moved slowly, deeply, getting to know each other with every breath, every sigh.

Her kiss was soft, yet ravenous. Gentle, yet aching. She let herself go completely, drowning in the flavor he had—like heat, like home, like the aftertaste of wine drunk in the sharing of secrets.

Their breaths were entwined, hot and discordant. Hearts beat in tandem, no longer as queen and duke, but as two souls laid bare.

No crown.

No court.

No kingdom.

No king.

Just Leon and Sona.

Two hearts at last permitted to beat in tandem.

And beneath the silver regard of the twin moons, they dissolved into one—slowly, deeply, utterly—lost in the kiss they had waited an eternity to give.
