Stellar Slacker: I Thought This Was an Idle Game!

Across the vast continents and floating sky-realms of Aethelgard, the ten minutes of impossible noon was no localized illusion.

It was an empire-shattering catastrophe of pure, unadulterated solar truth.

Four thousand miles to the east of the Radiant Dawn Academy, in the heart of the High Sun Imperial Capital, stood the Grand Astrological Court.

The imperial spire was carved from solid obsidian, soaring nine hundred feet above the gilded roofs of the imperial palace. Inside the topmost dome, seventy imperial diviners, master astromancers, and high seers sat in concentric circles around the empire’s greatest ancestral treasure: the Great Celestial Star-Globe.

The globe was twenty feet in diameter, forged from primeval star-bronze and inlaid with three thousand luminescent spirit pearls.

For three thousand years, the star-globe had rotated in flawless harmony with the firmament, tracking the rise and fall of imperial dynasties, celestial omens, and demonic incursions. Beside it hung the Nine-Heaven Divination Mirror, a massive disc of polished black jade that reflected the astral ley-lines of the heavens.

Grand Court Astrologer Lord Vane stood on the raised jade dais, holding his gilded brass astrolabe.

He was eighty years old, with a long silver beard that reached his silk sash. He was in the middle of calculating the autumn harvest horoscope for the Crown Prince.

”Observe the Eastern Dragon Constellation,” Lord Vane chanted in a solemn, melodic voice. ”The alignment is stable. The astral flow suggests a mild winter and abundant grain in the northern provinces—”

At 12:00 AM sharp, the brass astrolabe in his fingers suddenly hissed.

Lord Vane stopped mid-sentence.

The polished brass instrument grew burning hot in his palm. Before he could drop it, the delicate gear trains inside began to spin at screaming, supersonic speed.

SKRRRRRR-WHEEEEEE!

”What in the heavens?!” a senior diviner cried, leaping back from his bronze desk. ”The brass alignment pins are shearing off!”

”Look at the Star-Globe!” another shouted, voice cracking into a shriek. ”The counterweights are free-spinning!”

The twenty-foot bronze star-globe wasn’t rotating anymore. It was vibrating so violently the obsidian floorboards hummed beneath their boots.

Every single spirit pearl embedded in the bronze sphere lit up with blinding, scorching brilliance.

On the perimeter wall, the Nine-Heaven Divination Mirror began to howl like a wounded beast.

The black jade surface turned blood-red, then blazing orange, then brilliant, retina-burning white. The astral ley-lines etched into the jade twisted into jagged knots of pure solar plasma.

Lord Vane dropped his astrolabe as the metal burned through his skin.

He scrambled toward the central spirit gauge.

The brass needle, designed to measure ambient astral radiation on a scale of one to one thousand units, was pinned flat against the right stop.

CLANG-CLANG-CLANG!

The needle slammed against the brass peg until it snapped clean off.

”The astral flux!” Lord Vane screamed, tearing at his silk collar as the temperature in the sealed dome climbed by forty degrees in five seconds. ”It is off the scale! Ten thousand units! Fifty thousand! ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND ASTRAL UNITS!”

”Master, the mirror cannot hold the pressure!” a young apprentice shrieked. ”The celestial leys are flooding backward!”

CRACK-SHATTER!

With the concussive roar of an exploding artillery shell, the Nine-Heaven Divination Mirror detonated.

Ten thousand shards of superheated jade blasted across the dome, trailing golden fire like miniature meteorites. Silk banners caught fire. Wooden book cabinets burst into flame.

And then, the Great Celestial Star-Globe gave one final, agonized groan.

The solid star-bronze frame melted.

Twenty tons of ancient celestial bronze liquefied into a bubbling, white-hot puddle of slag right before the horrified eyes of seventy imperial astromancers.

BOOM!

A secondary burst of holy solar backlash threw Lord Vane through the air.

He crashed against the obsidian wall, his expensive dragon-embroidered robes singed black, his silver beard smoking with acrid fumes.

Around him, sixty diviners lay groaning on the scorched floor, their divination mirrors shattered, their crystal scrying bowls cracked into smoking powder.

Lord Vane did not look at his burned hands.

He did not call for the imperial physicians.

He pulled himself onto his knees, crawling through the shattered glass and molten bronze, staring out the shattered observation windows toward the western horizon.

There, in the western sky, the golden pillar had just faded, leaving the heavens drenched in warm, impossible twilight.

Tears of absolute, shattered comprehension poured down Lord Vane’s soot-streaked face.

He threw his arms into the air, smashing his forehead repeatedly against the burning obsidian flagstones.

”The Heavens have fallen!” Lord Vane bawled, his voice echoing across the burning dome in ragged, religious hysteria. ”The ancient star-maps are dead! The cosmos has been rewritten! A new sun is born in the heavens! The Supreme Solar Emperor has awakened from the First Era!”

Across the capital city, imperial war-bells began to toll in frantic, breathless rhythms.

In the southern marshes, three thousand miles away, the reclusive Shadow Divination Sect suffered an identical fate.

Deep beneath the Black Mountain Ridge, two hundred shadow-cultivators were seated around the Thousand-Ghost Scrying Pool. They had cultivated dark lunar essence for five centuries in absolute, sunless seclusion.

When the solar shockwave struck the subterranean water veins at midnight, the underground grotto lit up like the inside of a blast furnace.

The freezing, necrotic water of the sacred pool didn’t just ripple.

It boiled instantly!

HISSSSSSS!

Thick clouds of scalding, honey-scented steam erupted toward the cavern ceiling. Three thousand years of accumulated shadow miasma was dissolved, purified, and annihilated in less than ten seconds.

The Sect Master of the Shadow Pavilion, an ancient hermit who had not seen daylight in three centuries, ran screaming down the stone corridors with his robes smoking, clutching his blistered face.

”The True Yang!” the Sect Master wailed, stumbling into the outer courtyard. ”The True Yang Flame has incinerated the underworld! Seal the mountain gates! Bury the tunnels! The Solar Sovereign has come to cleanse the wicked!”

Back at the Radiant Dawn Academy, the Second Spire looked like the aftermath of an aerial bombardment.

Elder Alistair’s thirty-foot bronze telescope was dead.

The brass ocular assembly had melted into a deformed lump of metal that dripped molten solder onto the observation desk. Disciples were running back and forth with buckets of wet sand, putting out small fires that had erupted across forty astrological star-charts.

Elder Alistair himself was sitting cross-legged in the middle of a pile of smoking ash, clutching a half-burned star chart to his chest.

He was giggling.

A high-pitched, manic giggle that sent chills down the spines of the surviving disciples.

”He lives on the Seventh Spire,” Alistair whispered to himself, rocking back and forth in the soot. ”The Great Recluse... the master who sleeps in the ragged cottage... he didn’t just comprehend the Dao of Gravity. He holds the Great Sun in the palm of his hand.”

The heavy oak doors of the observatory banged open.

Arch-Inquisitor Valen strode into the smoking chamber, his white nightshirt hastily tucked into his formal disciplinary trousers. Behind him followed five senior council elders, their faces pale as curdled milk.

”Alistair!” Valen barked, coughing as the heavy smell of ozone and melted brass hit his throat. ”Give us the reading! The entire Academy Council is assembled! Was that an attack by the Western Sky Empire?!”

Alistair looked up through soot-covered spectacles, his eyes wild with religious fervor.

”An attack?” Alistair laughed hysterically, pointing a trembling finger toward Solitude Spire. ”You blind, arrogant fool! If that was an attack, our seven spires would currently be a smear of green glass floating through the void!”

Valen froze. ”Then what was it?!”

”It was an ignition,” Alistair whispered, his voice dropping into a reverent, terrified hush. ”A newly born star ignited within our mortal atmosphere. The mass, the heat, the pure primordial Yang... it originated from Solitude Spire. Exactly at the coordinate of Senior Disciple Felix Vance’s cottage.”

A collective gasp sucked the air from the room.

The five senior elders looked at each other, their hands shaking beneath their long sleeves.

”Felix Vance?” an elder croaked. ”The boy who refused to attend the morning assembly? The boy who shoved an oak cork into the academy chronometer?”

”The very same,” Valen whispered, his voice hollow with existential dread.

He reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a crumpled sheet of parchment.

It was an official Academy Disciplinary Citation, drafted earlier that afternoon. It cited Felix Vance for three violations: keeping an unauthorized apex aerial predator on school property, failing to wear standard academy footwear, and sleeping through mandatory afternoon scripture lectures.

Valen looked at the citation.

Then he looked out the shattered window toward Solitude Spire, where a faint, gentle golden aura still lingered around the humble straw roof.

With slow, deliberate movements, Valen brought the parchment to his mouth.

He ripped the citation in half with his teeth, chewed the dry paper into a soggy pulp, and swallowed it whole.

”What citation?” Valen asked the empty room, wiping ink from his lips with the back of his hand. ”I see zero violations. Solitude Spire is exempt from all academy rules. In fact, starting tomorrow morning, the First Spire will send forty carts of spirit melon and roast pork directly to his doorstep.”

”And the tuition fees?” another elder asked, trembling.

”If you mention tuition fees to a man who digests stars for breakfast,” Valen said coldly, ”I will personally throw you off the suspension bridge to save the academy from total annihilation.”

While three empires panicked and thousands of diviners wept upon the smoking ruins of their astrolabes, Solitude Spire remained the quietest place in the universe.

The golden pillar was completely gone.

Down in the clover yard, the Thunder Gryphon let out a massive, contented belch that smelled faintly of solar ozone.

The beast rolled onto its stomach, tucking its golden wings tightly against its sides. Its feathers had taken on a rich, lustrous amber sheen, glowing like freshly polished gold. It rested its eagle beak on its front paws and closed its eyes, drifting into the most comfortable nap of its life.

On the porch railing, Barnaby the clockwork owl stood motionless.

His brass feathers were warm to the touch. The hand-carved oak bottle cork remained wedged between his brass mandibles, and the copper penny gleamed softly in the returned starlight.

Inside the dark bedroom, Felix Vance tossed and turned.

The cottage was quiet. The bed was wonderfully warm a little too warm, actually.

Felix kicked his left foot out from beneath the heavy cotton quilt, letting his bare ankle hang over the edge of the mattress to catch the cool night air.

”Man...” Felix grumbled into his pillow, his voice thick with half-asleep annoyance. ”Did I leave the oven on in the kitchen? Or is the new heating mod overclocking the CPU?”

He reached over with a lazy hand, blindly patting the nightstand until his fingers touched the cool obsidian glass of the AetherDeck.

He didn’t open his eyes. He just tapped the screen once to check the notification.

【Item: AetherDeck Handheld Slate】 【Current Status: Idle Auto-Run Active】 【Core Temperature: 15,000,000 Kelvin (Stable)】 【Thermostat Setting: Cozy Room Temp (68°F)】 【Inspector Note: The entire astrological infrastructure of the continent just suffered a five-billion-gold collapse, but your toes are at an optimal sleeping temperature.】

”Sixty-eight degrees...” Felix mumbled, his breathing slowing back down. ”Good. If it gets any hotter, I’m turning the slider down to fifty.”

He pulled the quilt over his shoulder, closed his eyes, and sank right back into blissful, uninterrupted sleep.
