Stellar Slacker: I Thought This Was an Idle Game!

Inside the Grand Assembly Hall of the First Spire, nobody was breathing.

Forty elite Academy Inquisitors, nine Great Elders, and Headmaster Alistair stood around the Great Scrying Mirror. The ten-foot disc of polished celestial obsidian hummed softly, replaying the acoustic and thermal readings recorded during the 2:03 PM crisis.

Chief Diviner Master Vance tapped the glass with a trembling wooden pointer.

”These are the exact atmospheric metrics,” Master Vance croaked, adjusting his crooked spectacles with sweat-slicked fingers. ”At two minutes past two, the Abyssal Ghost Fleet had established complete spectral dominance over the archipelago. Ambient temperature dropped to minus thirty-four degrees. Total wraith count: one million, two hundred and forty thousand.”

He tapped the mirror again.

A sharp, vertical streak of gold appeared on the dark obsidian glass.

”Then, at precisely two hours, three minutes, and twelve seconds... a single kinetic event occurred on the front porch of Solitude Spire.”

A young elder in crimson robes leaned forward, his voice hushed. ”A hidden imperial cannon? A high-tier solar array?”

”Neither,” Master Vance whispered, his face turning the color of raw dough. ”The implement was identified as a woven river-reed slipper. Retail value: three copper coins.”

The hall was so silent that the fluttering of a moth against an oil lamp sounded like a drumbeat.

”The slipper accelerated from stationary repose to fifty-five times the speed of sound in three milliseconds,” Master Vance continued, reading from a parchment that shook in his grip. ”The atmospheric displacement generated an ionized plasma column of fifteen thousand degrees Celsius. Kinetic output: equivalent to a falling celestial meteor.”

He lowered the parchment, looking up at the assembly with haunted eyes.

”The million-ghost armada was obliterated in one point two seconds. Lord Nether-Bane’s ten-thousand-year cultivation was reduced to ash. And according to our long-range ocular arrays... the Sovereign of Slumber did not even rise from his floating chair.”

A collective, shuddering gasp rippled through the gathered elders.

Several elderly grandmasters quietly slipped prayer beads from their sleeves, silently chanting protective sutras to calm their racing hearts.

”And where is Lord Nether-Bane now?” Headmaster Alistair asked, his voice strained. ”Did the demon king escape back to the abyss?”

Master Vance swallowed hard.

”Our scrying mirrors show the Ghost King is currently on his knees in Solitude Spire’s front lawn. He has surrendered his Ten-Thousand-Year Primordial Soul-Pearl. The Sovereign placed the pearl on a stack of bakery receipts to keep them from blowing away in the wind. The Ghost King is now weeding the dandelion patches by hand.”

Arch-Inquisitor Valen, a scarred veteran who had fought through three continental wars, slowly sank into his chair.

”He... he turned a First Epoch world-destroying calamity into an unpaid gardener,” Valen muttered, his breath coming in shallow gasps. ”And the divine pearl of the nether realm... is a paperweight for bread slips.”

Headmaster Alistair closed his eyes, his long white beard trembling.

When he opened them again, his gaze was filled with pure, uncompromising resolve.

”Hear the council’s decree,” Alistair announced, his voice echoing through the grand hall. ”Effective immediately, Solitude Spire is no longer an academic annex. It is hereby designated as the Sanctuary of Absolute Light.”

The elders bowed in immediate, solemn agreement.

”Draft the imperial edicts,” Alistair ordered. ”The airspace within thirty miles of the peak is declared an eternal sanctuary. Any flying sword, sky-galleon, or wandering beast that enters without invitation shall be shot down by imperial ballistas. Any disciple who speaks above a whisper within earshot of the western gorge shall be stripped of their robes and exiled.”

Alistair turned to Arch-Inquisitor Valen, his expression urgent.

”Now, the most vital question: how do we appease the Sovereign? How do we ensure that his wrath never turns toward the First Spire?”

The elders looked at each other in panic.

How did one appease an entity that casually wielded fifty-five times the speed of sound with a straw slipper? Gold was dirt to him. Spirit stones were gravel. Imperial ranks were meaningless jokes.

Arch-Inquisitor Valen stepped forward, a glint of desperate inspiration in his eyes.

”Headmaster,” Valen said quietly. ”During my surveillance of the southern suspension bridge over the past two months, I have observed the Sovereign’s habits closely. He does not desire worldly power. He does not seek ancient scriptures. His divine appetite is singularly focused on two holy pillars.”

The elders leaned in, holding their breath. ”Which pillars?!”

”Sleep,” Valen whispered solemnly. ”And carbohydrates.”

An hour later, the Great Suspension Bridge connecting the First Spire to Solitude Spire witnessed the most bizarre imperial procession in the history of the realm.

Twenty senior elders, thirty high inquisitors, and forty master chefs marched across the wooden bridge.

The author’s narrative has been misappropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.

Every single one of them was barefoot.

They walked with exaggerated, slow-motion steps, planting their heels and rolling their toes onto the cedar planks to avoid making the slightest creak. Nobody spoke. Nobody coughed.

Between them, they pushed twelve lacquered jade hand-carts with greased wooden axles, accompanied by forty woven wicker hampers lined with purple velvet.

The aroma rising from the carts was intoxicating.

The Fire Spire had sent five spit-roasted golden spirit pheasants, basted in five-spice plum sauce and sprinkled with crushed sesame seeds.

The Water Spire had provided six tubs of chilled melon dew, candied dragon-fruit pastries, and crystal-wrapped peach dumplings.

The Earth Spire had prepared eight platters of braised pork belly slow-cooked in sweet dark soy and star anise, accompanied by stacks of warm, flaky scallion flatbreads.

Behind them came barrels of royal jasmine mist tea, pre-warmed to precisely eighty degrees by alchemical heating runes.

Lyra Ashford stood at the entrance of the suspension bridge, her hands resting calmly on the pommel of her sheathed rapier.

Her white-and-silver robes fluttered in the late afternoon breeze. Her silver hair caught the dying light of the sun, her violet eyes cool, majestic, and completely unreadable.

Headmaster Alistair approached the bridgehead, bowing so low his white beard swept the wooden planks.

”Lady Ashford,” Alistair whispered in a hushed, reverent tone. ”The Seven Spires offer this humble tribute of seasonal nourishment to the Supreme Sovereign. We pray that the great master found no disturbance in the afternoon air.”

Lyra looked at the twelve carts of gourmet roast meats, steaming pastries, and chilled desserts.

Her heart swelled with immense pride.

They understand, Lyra thought. The entire academy has witnessed Senior Brother’s cosmic dominance. They know that this peak holds the pivot of the heavens. They bring these offerings not as charity, but as holy sacrifice to appease the sleeping god.

”Your sincerity is noted, Headmaster,” Lyra said in a quiet, measured voice that barely carried across the bridge. ”Senior Brother is currently completing his post-battle meditation. Wheel the carts to the garden pathway, leave the hampers near the porch, and depart in silence.”

”Immediately, Lady Ashford! At once!” Alistair whispered frantically.

The elders and inquisitors tiptoed forward like stealth commandos, gently unloading the hampers along the stone garden path. They set each porcelain platter down with the delicate care of men handling volatile explosives.

They bowed three times toward the covered porch, took twenty steps backward without turning their backs, and vanished across the bridge like mist.

On the porch, Felix Vance stirred.

He blinked beneath his straw hat.

The nap had been decent. Not his best—getting woken up by a localized blizzard at 2:00 PM had definitely knocked his sleep quality score down by fifteen percent—but the second half of the nap had been solid.

His stomach let out a low, polite rumble.

”Man,” Felix muttered, pushing his straw hat up onto his messy hair. ”I’m starving. What time is it?”

He sat up on the edge of the Zero-Gravity Recliner, rubbed his face with both hands, and looked out past the porch railing.

He stopped.

Parked along his gravel pathway were twelve polished jade carts and twenty enormous red-lacquered picnic hampers.

Steam was rising from roasted golden pheasants. The sweet, savory smell of glazed pork belly and fresh-baked scallion bread filled the entire yard with heavenly fragrance.

Felix blinked twice, wondering if he was still dreaming.

A cheerful chime echoed in his ears as his AetherDeck lit up on the side table:

Felix stared at the screen, then stared at the carts of roasted meat.

”Wait,” Felix whispered, a slow grin spreading across his face. ”Did the delivery drivers bring the entire banquet hall?”

He walked down the porch steps in his bare feet.

He approached the nearest jade cart, picked up a golden, crackling roast pheasant leg, and took a huge, savory bite.

The skin was impossibly crisp. The meat was tender, juicy, and dripping with sweet plum glaze. A rich warmth spread through his chest, satisfying his hunger in a single glorious mouthful.

”Oh, wow,” Felix mumbled around his bite, his eyes widening. ”Now that is incredible. Perfectly seasoned. Good crust.”

Beside the pathway, the Imperial Sun-Griffin trotted over, its golden tail wagging like a puppy’s. It gave a hopeful, high-pitched chirp.

Felix tore off the remaining half of the roasted bird and tossed it into the griffin’s open beak.

GULP.

The griffin swallowed the prize whole, let out a joyful, ozone-scented burp, and flopped down onto its back in the grass, purring like a giant furnace.

Over in the corner of the garden fence, the former Ghost King was kneeling among the clover, clutching a small wooden bucket of pulled weeds. He looked up at Felix with hollow, terrified eye sockets, trembling from head to toe.

Felix walked over, reached into a basket of warm scallion flatbreads, and tossed two large pieces into the Ghost King’s lap.

”Good job on the lawn, buddy,” Felix said with a nod. ”Eat up. You look like you haven’t had a carb in ten thousand years.”

The Ghost King looked down at the warm, flaky bread resting on his charred rags.

A divine gift.

The Sovereign... has bestowed the Bread of Life upon this wretched sinner!

Tears of pure, overwhelming gratitude poured from the Ghost King’s empty sockets, soaking the scallion bread.

”Thank you, Sovereign!” the Ghost King wept, stuffing the bread into his skeletal jaw with shaking claws. ”This servant shall weed this garden until the stars fall from the sky!”

Felix shook his head, amused by the dramatic roleplay.

He loaded a wooden platter with three scallion buns, a bowl of braised pork, and a cup of fresh jasmine tea, and walked back up to the porch.

Barnaby sat silently on the railing, the oak bottle cork and copper penny gleaming in the dusk.

Felix gave the brass owl a friendly tap on the head: Clink.

”Hold the fort, Barnaby,” Felix said.

Felix settled back into his Zero-Gravity Recliner, balancing the plate of glazed pork on his knees.

The sun was sinking beneath the cloud sea, painting the sky in breathtaking shades of deep amber, rose, and violet. A pleasant, warm mountain breeze drifted across the porch, carrying the sweet fragrance of the blooming Sun-Lotus Cabbage.

Beside his chair, Lyra Ashford folded her hands and stood at attention, watching her Senior Brother chew his dinner with peaceful, contented grace.

Her violet eyes reflected the evening light, her heart calm and untroubled.

The world had survived another apocalypse. The ancient dead had been subdued. And the Sovereign of Slumber was well-fed.

Felix swallowed his last bite of braised pork, washed it down with a sip of hot jasmine tea, and leaned his head back against the mesh headrest.

He picked up his straw hat, pulled it down over his forehead, and let out a long, happy sigh into the twilight.

”You know,” Felix murmured as his eyelids grew heavy, ”I take back what I said about the bad drop rates. This server’s daily login rewards are actually pretty top-tier.”
