Stellar Slacker: I Thought This Was an Idle Game!

Felix stepped inside the quiet cottage and kicked the wooden front door shut with his heel.

The lock clicked into place with a dry clack.

Inside, the cottage was peaceful and warm through the kitchen window, the emerald luminescence of the Sun-Lotus Cabbage cast a soothing, pale-green glow across the clean floorboards. The sweet scent of honeyed cabbage leaves drifted through the crack in the glass, keeping the interior at a pleasant sixty-nine degrees.

Felix carried his empty dumpling bowl to the stone wash basin beside the hearth.

He dropped the bowl into the water with a soft clatter, letting out another small yawn that made his jaw pop.

”Wash tomorrow,” Felix declared to the empty kitchen. ”Never do dishes after eleven. That’s a fundamental house rule.”

On his way past the dining table, he glanced down at the short front leg.

Resting squarely beneath the uneven pine timber was Grandmaster Vivienne’s Sovereign Heart Seal (bearing the ancient jade seal on its base).

The ancient, multi-million-year-old Primordial Relic was completely silent, buried under three inches of floor shadow. A faint trace of purple void static flickered across its jade-carved edges, perfectly balancing the kitchen table against the warped cedar floor.

On top of the table sat a heavy porcelain crock filled with pickled mountain plums.

Felix gave the corner of the table an experimental shove with his hip.

The table didn’t budge. It didn’t wobble by half a millimeter.

”Rock solid,” Felix nodded approvingly. ”Whatever high-tier junk Master Vivienne left in the cabinet, at least it’s good for carpentry. Best table shim in the province.”

A timid knock sounded at the front door.

Three light, rhythmic taps echoed through the wood, followed by a polite clearing of a throat.

”Senior Brother?” Lyra’s voice filtered through the cedar panels, breathless and trembling. ”Pardon this disciple’s intrusion. I have brought the jug of fresh well water for your nightstand.”

Felix sighed, walking over and turning the brass latch. ”Door’s unlocked, Lyra. You don’t have to knock like a bailiff.”

The door swung inward.

Lyra Ashford stood on the threshold, holding a heavy glazed earthenware jug with both hands.

Her knuckles were white. Her silver-and-white disciple robes were immaculate, but her violet eyes were wide with an intensity usually reserved for soldiers walking into an active artillery bombardment.

She stepped across the threshold, walking so lightly her boots made zero sound against the planks.

”I apologize for disturbing your divine contemplation, Senior Brother,” Lyra murmured, keeping her gaze reverently lowered toward the floorboards. ”The mountain spring was exceptionally pure this evening. I filtered it three times through spirit-silk to ensure no impurities disrupt your dantian.”

Felix took the earthen jug from her trembling hands and set it on the low counter.

”It’s just tap water from the stone well, Lyra,” Felix said, waving a lazy hand. ”You don’t need to run it through fancy silk. My stomach has cast-iron resistance.”

【Target: Lyra Ashford】 【State of Mind: Overstimulated Religious Awe】 【Internal Monologue: Convinced you drink celestial dew to purify the nine heavenly meridians of your nascent star.】 【Inspector Note: Will likely spend the next two hours meditating on the spiritual significance of your hydration habits.】

Felix glanced at the floating brackets, then looked at Lyra’s pale, exhausted face.

Dark purple circles ringed her eyes. She had spent the entire day running between the mountain bridge, the academy archives, and the kitchen, yet her posture remained rigid as an iron rod.

”Hey,” Felix said, leaning against the counter. ”What time do you usually sleep?”

Lyra stiffened, blinking in surprise. ”I... I usually cultivate through the third watch, Senior Brother. I practice the Frost-Bloom Sword Scripture until three in the morning, sleep for two hours, and rise at dawn for morning drills.”

Felix stared at her in utter disbelief.

”Two hours?” Felix echoed, shaking his head with genuine disgust. ”Two hours of sleep? Are you actively trying to crash your operating system?”

Lyra swallowed hard. ”Diligence is the foundation of the Ashford Clan, Senior Brother. The path to the heavens requires relentless labor.”

”The path to the heavens is going to give you high blood pressure and premature baldness,” Felix told her bluntly. ”Listen to me, Lyra. Working past eleven kills your stamina bar. Your offline regeneration drops to zero, your cognitive hitboxes get sluggish, and tomorrow you’ll be missing half your inputs.”

Lyra’s breath caught in her throat.

Stamina bar... offline regeneration... cognitive hitboxes...

The esoteric terminology struck her ears like thunderbolts of forgotten celestial wisdom!

Senior Brother is speaking of the Primordial Soul Matrix! Lyra thought frantically, her mind spinning as she dissected every syllable. He warns me that pushing beyond the eleventh hour severs the connection to the Great Universal Ley Lines! By denying my physical vessel rest, my soul loses its ability to regenerate its divine essence from the void!

She dropped to one knee, pressing her palms against the floorboards.

”This disciple hears and obeys!” Lyra whispered, voice trembling with absolute conviction. ”I will preserve my stamina bar! I will protect my offline regeneration from spiritual collapse!”

”Yeah, great,” Felix muttered, turning toward the washroom. ”Just go to bed. Seriously. Don’t make me revoke your kitchen privileges.”

He left Lyra kneeling in the front hall, slipping through the small wooden doorway into the washroom.

The washroom was modest: a cedar wash tub, a brass mirror hanging from a rusted nail, and a shelf holding clean towels.

Felix lit a small tallow candle, setting it on the wooden shelf.

It was 11:50 PM.

Time for the nighttime routine of a dedicated, professional slacker.

Felix reached for his wooden toothbrush.

The handle was carved from cheap pine, fitted with stiff boar bristles. Beside it sat a small ceramic jar of crushed mint-bark powder.

He dipped the bristles into the water basin, coated them in the green powder, and began brushing his teeth with slow, methodical strokes.

A pair of translucent blue brackets immediately popped into the air beside the brass mirror:

【Item: Coarse Bristle Toothbrush】 【Action: Routine Dental Maintenance】 【Progress: 45 / 120 Seconds】 【Inspector Note: A mundane boar-bristle brush with ground mint-bark. Grants a minor hygiene perk and prevents your breath from smelling like old dungeon moss in the morning.】

Felix brushed his molars, checking his reflection in the wavy brass mirror.

His messy brown hair was sticking out at odd angles, and dark circles shadowed his eyes. But beneath the fatigue, his skin had an unnervingly clear, porcelain sheen.

When the two minutes finished, he rinsed his mouth with cold well water and spat into the drain.

DING!

A cheerful system notification chimed in his ear:

[BUFF ACQUIRED: FRESH BREATH]

Duration: 8 Hours

Sleep Quality Rating: +2.0%

Morning Halitosis Penalty: -100%

Note: Clean teeth improve resting metabolic recovery.

Felix wiped his chin with a linen towel. ”Plus two percent sleep quality. Free stats just for brushing my teeth. I love modern quality-of-life updates.”

He pulled off his rumpled day tunic and tossed it into the wicker laundry basket in the corner.

From the wooden peg on the wall, he grabbed his sleepwear: an oversized, washed-out gray cotton tunic that hung past his knees. The fabric had been washed hundreds of times, making it soft as a cloud.

He slipped the loose tunic over his head, feeling the cool cotton drape comfortably across his shoulders.

He padded barefoot out of the washroom and walked into the small bedroom.

The room contained only three things: a wooden nightstand, a straw floor mat, and a low cedar platform bed piled high with quilted cotton blankets and a plush celestial feather pillow.

Over in the corner windowsill, Barnaby had already relocated.

The plump brass automaton stood on his small wooden perch, facing into the room. His amber crystal eyes were dimmed to a faint, golden standby glow. The hand-carved oak bottle cork remained wedged between his brass mandibles, and the copper tip gleamed in the moonlight.

Barnaby gave a single, quiet tick-whir from his chest gears, acknowledging Felix’s entrance.

”Night, Barnaby,” Felix murmured, walking over to the bed. ”Keep the volume at zero.”

Barnaby’s optical shutters clicked once, entering low-power sleep mode.

Felix climbed onto the cedar bed and sat on the edge of the mattress.

He pulled the AetherDeck from the pocket of his discarded tunic and rested the cool obsidian slate across his bare knees.

The corner clock on the display showed 11:55 PM.

And right in the center of the screen, the retro progress bar had finally reached the end of the line.

FLASH!

A vibrant golden aura flared along the beveled brass edges of the AetherDeck.

The screen shifted, replacing the pixelated loading bar with a massive, high-priority system upgrade notification. The text pulsed with deep crimson and blazing gold borders:

[POCKET STAR SANDBOX: MILESTONE REACHED]

Core Type: Terrestrial Super-Mass (2.0 Earth Masses)

Central Compression Phase: 100.00% COMPLETE

Core Density: 1.50 x 10^8 kg/m³

Central Pressure: 2.50 x 10^16 Pascals

[CORE UPGRADE READY: INITIATE SUSTAINED THERMONUCLEAR FUSION?]

Warning: Dantian temperature will stabilize at 15,000,000 K.

Thermal energy output will increase by 4,000,000%.

Micro-gravitational distortion fields will calibrate.

Select Execution Mode:

[A. Manual Valve Control] [B. YES: AUTO-RUN WHILE AFK]

Felix stared down at the blinking prompt, his eyelids drooping with heavy, late-night exhaustion.

”Fifteen million Kelvin?” Felix muttered, scratching his collarbone. ”What kind of crazy numbers are these indie devs throwing around? That’s ridiculous power-scaling.”

He looked at the two options at the bottom of the screen.

Option A: Manual Valve Control.

”Manual valve control at five minutes to midnight?” Felix sneered softly, shaking his head at the ridiculousness of the game designers. ”Do I look like a guy who wants to play a plumbing simulator while trying to fall asleep? If I wanted to manage pressure valves and temperature gauges, I would have bought a factory tycoon game.”

He shifted his thumb to Option B.

[YES: AUTO-RUN WHILE AFK].

”Auto-run is the greatest invention in the history of gaming,” Felix whispered with deep reverence. ”The developers put auto-play into idle games for a reason. You press the button, you go to sleep, and you wake up with eight hours of free loot.”

Without a second thought, Felix pressed his right thumb down onto the golden [YES: AUTO-RUN WHILE AFK] button.

BEEP-BOOP!

A cheery 8-bit sound effect chimed from the slate’s tiny speaker grill.

The screen refreshed with a clean, dark-blue countdown timer:

[AUTO-RUN INITIALIZED: SCHEDULED IGNITION IN 00:04:18]

Core Ignition Scheduled: 12:00:00 AM Sharp

Fusion Catalyst: Proton-Proton Chain Reaction

Containment Field: Automated Background Dampers ACTIVE

Thermal Shunt: Radiator Mod v1.2 ENGAGED

Status: Standby for Stellar Spark.

Goodnight, Slacker! Offline farming rewards will accrue.

”Four minutes,” Felix murmured, setting the AetherDeck face-down on the wooden nightstand beside his bed. ”Perfect. I’ll be asleep before the countdown hits zero.”

He swung his legs up onto the mattress.

He grabbed the heavy quilted blanket, pulling the thick cotton layers all the way up to his chin. He punched the celestial feather pillow once to create a comfortable hollow for his head, then buried his face into the cool linen.

Inside his dantian, the compressed 2.0-Earth-Mass core sat suspended in absolute equilibrium.

The subatomic distance between hydrogen nuclei had collapsed to zero. The Coulomb barriers were groaning under twenty-five quadrillion pascals of pure gravitational clamp.

The entire internal structure was wound tight like a cosmic spring, waiting for the clock to strike twelve.

Outside the cottage, standing in the dark grass near the porch railing, Lyra Ashford suddenly stopped breathing.

The night air had gone dead.

Zero leaves rustled on the ancient iron-wood trees. The mountain wind ceased entirely.

The ambient atmospheric pressure around Solitude Spire plummeted, ionizing the air with a crisp, electric smell of ozone that made the hair on Lyra’s arms stand straight up.

She stared at the dark bedroom window with wide, trembling eyes.

Four minutes... Lyra sensed the terrifying, breathless vacuum pulling at her soul. The universe has fallen silent. The heavens are holding their breath. Something ancient and terrible is about to wake.

Inside the dark bedroom, Felix let out a soft, happy sigh.

He turned onto his side, tucked his hands beneath his cheek, and let his breathing slow into the gentle rhythm of early sleep.
