Stellar Slacker: I Thought This Was an Idle Game!

In the civilized world, two o’clock in the afternoon was a sacred hour.

It was the golden window where lunch had fully settled, the sun was at its gentlest angle, and any responsible adult was morally obligated to lie down and do absolutely nothing.

Felix Vance took that responsibility very seriously.

He was curled up in his Zero-Gravity Ergonomic Recliner, suspended an inch above the weathered cedar floorboards. His worn straw hat rested across the bridge of his nose, creating a pocket of warm, soothing twilight for his eyes.

Underneath his ribcage, his 2.0-Earth-Mass core spun with the smooth, silent purr of a well-oiled cosmic turbine.

It radiated a steady, comfortable thirty-seven degrees Celsius through his blood, maintaining a private pocket of climate-controlled perfection around his chair.

Everything in the universe was balanced. Everything was peaceful.

Then, the sky died.

High above the central gorge of the Radiant Dawn Academy, the sun was not simply covered by clouds. It was devoured.

A wall of pure necrotic fog, thicker than black grease, rolled across the firmament like a spilled bottle of ink.

At the head of this spectral darkness sailed Lord Nether-Bane upon his flagship, the Titan’s Rib.

The dreadnought was three hundred yards of bleached leviathan bone, surrounded by swirling vortexes of wailing green soul-fire. Beneath its hull, one hundred lesser bone galleons formed an impenetrable battle wedge, flanked by a million shrieking wraiths.

The Ghost King spread his skeletal arms wide, standing at the prow like an emperor surveying a field of condemned cattle.

”Mortal worms of the Radiant Dawn!” the Ghost King’s voice roared, echoing through the mountain valleys like cracking stone. ”Ten thousand years ago, your ancestors laid craven wards upon my crypt! Today, the debt is collected in marrow and blood!”

As he spoke, he released the full depth of his cultivation.

An abyssal winter erupted from the flagship.

The temperature across the seven floating islands did not drop gradually. It plummeted forty degrees in three seconds.

Air froze instantly into falling needles of white rime. The vibrant green pine trees clinging to the academy terraces withered into brittle, black crystal. The mountain waterfalls connecting the floating peaks froze mid-fall, transforming into jagged pillars of greenish ice.

On the First Spire, three thousand disciples collapsed to their knees, clutching their chests as their breath froze in their throats.

”The Soul-Freezing Domain!” Headmaster Alistair cried out, his white robes stiffening with frost as he channeled all his Golden Core spiritual qi into a trembling golden barrier. ”It penetrates physical armor and attacks the soul directly! Even our ancient mountain arrays are freezing from the inside out!”

”Vice-Chancellor, look at the sky!” Elder Moros screamed, pointing a trembling, frostbitten finger upward. ”The sun is completely gone! At two in the afternoon, it is blacker than the ninth layer of hell!”

Across all seven spires, weeping and despair filled the air.

Disciples wrote final farewell talismans to their families. Elders prepared their ancestral sacrifice arrays, knowing that in the face of a million ancient wraiths, they had perhaps five minutes left to live.

Meanwhile, on Solitude Spire, the sudden winter was causing minor household inconveniences.

Down in the vegetable garden, the Sun-Lotus Cabbage was extremely offended.

The five-star celestial crop flared its golden, succulent leaves, emitting a defiant hum that created a twenty-foot dome of warm, radiant light. The necrotic frost hissed and turned to sweet-smelling steam the instant it touched the cabbage fence, leaving the garden soil rich, damp, and perfectly thawed.

Beside the cabbage patch, the Imperial Sun-Griffin opened one yellow eye.

It felt a sharp chill on the tip of its black leather nose.

The colossal beast gave an annoyed snort, tucked its beak underneath its golden wing, and dragged its fluffy tail closer to its belly. It refused to get up. The grass next to the cabbage was warm, and moving required burning calories it intended to save for dinner.

Up on the porch railing, Barnaby the clockwork owl was having a worse time.

Frost was coating his brass plumage, freezing the delicate balance gears in his left wing.

Click-whirrr.

Barnaby turned his brass head toward the northern sky. His amber crystal eyes flashed with cold mechanical fury. He opened his brass beak to unleash a three-hundred-word imperial lecture on weather maintenance and trespassing penalties.

Stolen story; please report.

MMPHH!

No sound came out.

The hand-carved oak bottle cork Felix had jammed into his beak remained immovably sealed, right beside his shiny copper penny.

Barnaby clicked his gears in silent, muffled outrage, his brass tail feathers vibrating like an angry bumblebee.

Standing beside the front steps, Lyra Ashford gripped the hilt of her silver rapier until her knuckles turned white.

The icy wind whipped her long silver hair, sending needle-sharp crystals of frost across her cheeks. Her violet eyes hardened. The sheer weight of the million-ghost armada pressed down upon her shoulders like an iron mountain. Her breathing was ragged, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

This is the end of the world, Lyra thought, staring up at the terrifying bone fleet descending toward the peaks. A Calamity-tier ancient sovereign, backed by a million vengeful dead. Even the combined forces of the empire could not withstand this tide.

She looked back toward the porch, her gaze trembling.

Felix Vance was still in his recliner.

He had not summoned a sword. He had not drawn a protective talisman. He had not even lowered his feet to the cedar floorboards.

Why is Senior Brother so calm? Lyra’s mind raced, falling into the familiar spiral of profound over-analysis.

The entire sky has been converted into an abyssal hellscape. The light of the sun has been completely erased. Yet Senior Brother does not move. He does not flinch.

Could it be... this was his design all along? Did Senior Brother intentionally shatter the subterranean crypt to draw the ancient evils of the First Epoch into the open air, where they could be eradicated in a single stroke?!

Lyra’s breath caught in her throat. The sheer, dizzying scale of Senior Brother’s strategic foresight left her weak at the knees.

Of course! Why else would he remain motionless? He is waiting for the fleet to enter the exact center of his divine convergence point! His slumber is not apathy... it is a terrifying snare!

On the porch, Felix Vance stirred.

He wasn’t calculating a cosmic convergence point.

His feet were cold felix had kicked off his frayed straw slippers twenty minutes ago to let his bare toes enjoy the afternoon breeze. But right now, the breeze felt like someone had opened an industrial walk-in freezer and aimed the blower fan directly at his ankles.

He shifted his weight in the mesh recliner, pulling his toes back toward his linen shorts.

”Did the thermostat break?” Felix muttered under his breath, his voice thick with sleep.

He didn’t want to wake up. Waking up meant resetting his sleep cycle, which would ruin his optimal three-hour afternoon nap window.

He reached his right arm out from under the recliner’s armrest, blindly patting the pine side table for his tea.

His fingers found the smooth porcelain handle of his celadon cup. He lifted it toward his lips, his straw hat still covering his eyes, and tilted the cup back.

Clink.

Nothing poured into his mouth.

Instead, a hard, solid cylinder of green ice bumped against his top lip.

Felix paused.

He tilted the cup further.

Clink.

Still nothing. The tea had frozen into a solid, fifty-milliliter hockey puck.

Felix let out a long, nasal exhale that blew the bottom edge of his straw hat upward.

He slowly reached up with his left hand, pinched the frayed brim of the straw hat, and lifted it three inches off his face.

He blinked through the twilight.

Except it wasn’t twilight. It was pitch-black.

The kind of black that belonged at 3:00 AM during a power outage in an unlit basement.

A translucent set of HUD brackets popped up in the center of his vision:

【Environmental Hazard: Abyssal Necrotic Frost】 【Ambient Temperature: -34°C】 【Visibility: 0.2% (Full Server Blackout)】 【Inspector Note: The skybox textures have failed to load. A large congregation of noisy, uninvited spectral entities has plunged the regional thermostat below freezing. Your tea is officially ruined.】

Felix stared at the frozen teacup in his hand.

Then he looked out past the porch railing, staring into the pitch-black sky where a hundred glowing green bone ships were slowly descending like bloated vultures.

Above the ships, a towering skeletal figure wreathed in imperial funeral silks was brandishing a jagged scythe, cackling with unhinged, theater-kid energy.

”Mortal worms!” the skeletal giant bellowed, his voice vibrating through Felix’s teeth. ”Weep and despair! Under the shadow of Lord Nether-Bane, the sun shall never rise again! Offer your souls, and your deaths shall be swift!”

Felix sat there, holding his frozen teacup, his expression flat as an iron frying pan.

He stared at the bone fleet for three whole seconds.

Then, he looked down at the AetherDeck on the table:

[AETHERDECK OS: SYSTEM PERFORMANCE MONITOR]

Current Local Time: 2:03 PM (Optimal Nap Period)

Ambient Light Level: CRITICAL ERROR (0 Lumens)

Solar Absorption Efficiency: Dropped by 99.4%

Offline Reward Growth Rate: STALLED DUE TO POOR LIGHTING

User Status: Mildly Sleep-Deprived / Severely Annoyed

Recommended Action: File Bug Report or Eliminate Annoyance

Felix slowly lowered the frozen cup back onto the saucer.

The porcelain made a sharp clack against the pine table.

”Are you serious right now?” Felix whispered into the freezing dark.

His voice wasn’t loud. It wasn’t majestic. It carried the pure, exhausted, bitter resentment of a graveyard-shift worker who had just been woken up by a lawnmower outside his bedroom window after twenty minutes of sleep.

”It’s two in the afternoon,” Felix grunted, rubbing his eyes with the heels of his palms. ”The tea was fresh. The sun was out. I had two more hours on my offline stamina boost.”

Standing near the garden fence, Lyra Ashford felt the subtle change in the air.

It wasn’t a rise in spiritual qi. Senior Brother had no spiritual qi.

It was gravity.

The 2.0-Earth-Mass core in Felix’s chest shifted its rotation by half a degree as Felix leaned forward in his chair.

A heavy, suffocating wave of pure terrestrial density rippled outward from the porch. The floorboards didn’t creak; the wood molecules simply compressed under the sheer, silent weight of his annoyance.

Lyra’s breath hitched. Her heart felt like it was being squeezed by an invisible iron fist.

He is displeased, she realized, terror washing over her veins in a cold wave.

Senior Brother is not merely observing. The Sovereign of Slumber has been disturbed! The ancient ghosts have committed the ultimate sacrilege: they have interrupted the Divine Nap!

High in the sky, Lord Nether-Bane was completely oblivious to the planetary mass shifting on the small porch below.

He raised his soul scythe high, channeling the necrotic power of a million wraiths into a single, world-ending spear of dark lightning aimed directly at the Seven Spires.

”Perish, insects!” the Ghost King shrieked. ”Drown in eternal night!”

On the porch, Felix let out a deep, gut-wrenching groan of pure irritation.

”Every single time I find a comfortable position,” Felix muttered, swinging his bare legs over the edge of the recliner, ”some clown with a loudspeaker decides to host an outdoor concert.”
