Stellar Slacker: I Thought This Was an Idle Game!

Night fell across Solitude Spire like a thick velvet curtain.

Felix Vance sat on the edge of the covered cedar porch, dangling his bare feet over the cool floorboards. The mountain breeze was pleasant, carrying the sweet, honeyed scent of the Sun-Lotus Cabbage blooming near the stone well.

He held a cracked porcelain bowl in his left hand, slowly finishing the last three cold pork dumplings from his evening delivery hamper.

With his right hand, he held the AetherDeck.

The obsidian screen glowed softly in the twilight, reflecting off his dark hair. A cheerful retro progress bar occupied the center of the display, creeping forward at a painfully sluggish pace.

Felix chewed his dumpling thoughtfully, watching the percentage tick up by one-thousandth of a percent.

”Ninety-nine point eight percent,” Felix muttered around a mouthful of dough. ”Classic mobile game pacing. They always stretch the last two percent so you’re tempted to spend real money on speed-up tokens.”

He tapped the screen with a dumpling-greased thumb.

Nothing happened. The timer continued its steady, uncaring crawl toward midnight.

”No way am I buying microtransactions for a background physics engine,” Felix told the empty porch. ”I have plenty of patience. I can wait forty minutes for a patch to install.”

Down in the overgrown grass, the Thunder Gryphon let out a heavy, contented sigh.

The massive golden beast was curled up in a bed of clover, head resting flat between two enormous eagle talons. Its lion tail flicked lazily, brushing against an empty porcelain soup crock Felix had left out earlier.

Beside Felix on the cedar railing, Barnaby the clockwork owl stood on night duty.

The plump brass automaton had his head swiveled ninety degrees, staring intently at the glowing cabbage patch. The hand-carved oak bottle cork was jammed securely into his beak, held in place by the polished copper tip Felix had fastened weeks ago.

Barnaby’s internal balance wheel gave a faint whir-click-tick, venting a tiny wisp of steam from his copper collar.

Felix reached over and gave the owl’s brass shoulder a brief pat.

”Stay frosty, Barnaby,” Felix said. ”Ten o’clock curfew is in effect. Anyone who tries to come up here with sect paperwork gets pecked.”

Barnaby’s amber crystal eyes blinked twice in silent, grumpy agreement.

Felix set his empty dumpling bowl on the porch floor. He leaned back on his elbows, gazing up into the clear mountain skybox.

High above the floating archipelago of Radiant Dawn Academy, thousands of cold white stars sparkled across the dark firmament. The twin moons of Aethelgard hung side by side, casting silver light across the mist-shrouded valleys below.

Then, deep inside Felix’s chest, something gave a tiny, rhythmic squeeze.

It didn’t hurt. To Felix, it felt like nothing more than a stray gas bubble or the gentle tug of an elastic waistband after a heavy dinner.

In reality, two full Earth masses of super-compressed matter were collapsing inward, shrinking toward the subatomic radius required for hydrogen fusion.

A silent wave of gravity washed outward from the wooden porch.

It didn’t make a sound. It didn’t kick up dust.

Instead, the ambient light of the mountain peak began to bend.

The silver moonlight falling on the wooden cedar planks suddenly curved, twisting into strange, luminous arcs. The straight wooden posts supporting the porch roof looked momentarily wavy, as if viewed through three inches of curved carnival glass.

Felix blinked, rubbing his tired eyes with the back of his sleeve.

”Man, my vision is getting blurry,” Felix grumbled. ”That’s what happens when you stare at a handheld screen in the dark. Bad for the retinas.”

He shook his head and looked back up at the night sky.

Up in the heavens, the stars were no longer points of light.

The massive gravitational distortion field radiating from Felix’s dantian reached five miles into the upper atmosphere. Photons traveling from distant constellations struck the invisible curvature of space, bending sharply around the spire like water parting around the bow of a ship.

Unlawfully taken from NovelPhoenix, this story should be reported if seen on Amazon.

Across the entire northern sky, the stars warped into perfect, luminous rings.

Silver halos circled the zenith of Solitude Spire. The twin moons distorted into stretched, glowing crescents that curved around Felix’s straw roof like twin silver horns.

Down on the Second Spire, three miles away, the Academy Grand Observatory was in total chaos.

Elder Alistair, Chief Astromancer of the Radiant Dawn, stood with his eye glued to the brass eyepiece of the Great Empyrean Star-Mirror. The thirty-foot bronze telescope was calibrated to track astral alignments with millimeter precision.

Right now, Alistair’s hands were shaking so violently that his velvet sleeve rattled against the brass casing.

”By the Ancestors’ tombs...” Alistair croaked, his voice cracking into a high, wheezing squeak. ”What am I looking at? Adjust the focus! Check the celestial counterweights!”

Three senior disciples scrambled frantically across the iron catwalks, spinning adjustment wheels and checking glowing spirit gauges.

”The counterweights are balanced, Master!” one disciple shouted, terrified. ”The lenses are completely clean! The astral mirrors are aligned to the North Sovereign Constellation!”

”Then why are the stars running in circles?!” Alistair roared, shoving the disciple aside to peer through the secondary glass finder. ”The Seven Dragon Stars have curved into an unbroken ring! The Northern Dipper is folded like a crushed silver ribbon! Look at the spatial focal point! Look at it!”

The three disciples clustered around the observation aperture.

Through the polished crystal lens, the night sky looked completely unreal.

Every single ray of starlight across the northern hemisphere was curving downward, drawn toward a single, microscopic focal point on the horizon. The light didn’t scatter. It formed a breathtaking, terrifying mandala of bent space-time, spinning slowly like a cosmic whirlpool of pure silver.

And at the dead center of that celestial vortex sat the dark, weathered silhouette of Solitude Spire.

”Gravitational lensing...” Alistair whispered, his face draining of every drop of blood. ”That is not an illusion. That is not an optical refraction caused by mountain fog. The very fabric of space-time is collapsing under an unfathomable, primordial mass!”

A young disciple swallowed hard, his knees knocking together under his silk robes. ”Master... is it an ancient Abyssal Demon Beast waking up beneath the continent?”

”Fool!” Alistair slapped the back of the disciple’s head with trembling fingers. ”No beast possesses such pure, majestic authority! Space-time does not bend for monsters! Space-time bends only for the Sovereign Pillars of Creation! Look at the Spire! The Great Recluse... the Master of Solitude Spire is condensing a Primordial World Core!”

Across the academy’s outer dormitories, hundreds of inner disciples poured onto the open balconies.

They pointed trembling fingers toward the northern sky, gasping in collective terror.

Disciples who had spent decades cultivating delicate sword qi felt their spiritual veins throb with heavy, sluggish resistance. The air felt thick, like breathing cold honey. The gentle downward pull of the earth felt heavier, anchoring their boots to the flagstones with the weight of wet lead.

”Look at the moons!” a sword-cultivator cried, clutching his jade pendant. ”The twin moons are bowing toward the Seventh Spire! The celestial bodies are paying homage!”

Up on the mountain suspension bridge leading to Solitude Spire, Lyra Ashford stood completely frozen.

She had just finished scrubbing the dinner pots in the courtyard kitchen and was returning with a fresh jug of cold well water for Senior Brother’s nightstand.

She held the earthen jug in both hands, her violet eyes wide with absolute, religious terror.

She didn’t need a telescope. She was standing barely fifty paces from the porch.

To her eyes, the space surrounding Felix Vance was visibly rippling.

Clear ripples of gravitational distortion radiated outward from his chest in slow, rhythmic pulses, like waves rolling across a calm pond. When the ripples passed through the cedar railing, the wood seemed to stretch and compress. When they passed through the lantern light hanging from the eaves, the yellow flame warped into a shimmering golden ring.

And sitting right in the center of that terrifying cosmic distortion field was Felix Vance.

He had his feet kicked up on the porch railing. He was wearing his rumpled sleeping tunic with one sleeve rolled higher than the other.

He had one hand wedged lazily into his waistband, while the other casually tapped the brass slate on his lap.

【Target: Felix Vance】 【Cultivation Realm: ??? (Spatial Density Unmeasurable)】 【Ambient Gravitational Field: 4.8G (Localized)】 【Inspector Note: A cosmic entity compressing an entire world’s worth of mass between his ribs while wondering if he has enough clean socks for tomorrow.】

Lyra’s breath caught in her throat. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird.

He is doing it, Lyra thought, tears of overwhelming awe stinging the corners of her eyes. The ancient texts of the Ashford Clan spoke of the Pre-Ignition Phase... when a True God prepares to ignite the Primordial Dawn within his mortal vessel!

She watched the starlight curve gracefully around his straw hat, forming an ethereal silver crown that hovered an inch above his messy brown hair.

He doesn’t use protective talismans, Lyra observed, her fingers digging into the clay jug. He doesn’t have nine grandmasters chanting barrier incantations to stabilize his soul. He sits alone on a wooden porch, dangling his feet, bending the stars of the heavens as if adjusting the pleats of a common bedsheet! His Dao of Effortless Dominance has reached the realm where even light itself must bend to his serenity!

On the porch, Felix let out a small, satisfied burp.

”Those pork dumplings had a little too much ginger,” Felix said to himself.

He tapped the screen of the AetherDeck again. The compression progress had climbed to 99.89%.

A small system dialogue box popped up with a cheerful retro chime:

[SYSTEM ADVISORY: AMBIENT GRAVITY WARNING]

Local gravity field has increased by 380% within 10 meters.

Minor optical refraction and temporal drag detected.

Recommended Action: Keep breakable glassware off table edges

to avoid drop-damage during patch finalization.

Felix read the prompt, then looked over at his empty dumpling bowl sitting on the porch planks.

The porcelain bowl had not moved an inch. It was sitting completely flat on the cedar wood.

”Keep breakable glassware off table edges?” Felix muttered, shaking his head at the screen. ”Thanks for the tip, captain obvious. The bowl is on the floor. It literally can’t fall any lower.”

He glanced up at the night sky again.

The stars still looked weirdly smeared into blurry rings, like someone had taken a wet thumb and dragged it across a fresh oil painting.

”Seriously, this rendering engine needs an update,” Felix grunted, rubbing his tired eyes. ”The skybox textures are completely glitching out. If this was a modern triple-A game, the forums would be on fire right now.”

He stretched his arms above his head, hearing his back pop twice with pleasant relief.

The movement sent another gentle wave of gravitational shear washing through the yard. The Thunder Gryphon gave a muffled snort in its sleep, rolled onto its back with all four massive paws sticking straight into the air, and continued snoring like a rusted chainsaw.

Felix stood up from the porch floorboards.

His legs felt slightly heavier than usual, like he had spent the afternoon doing light squats at the gym. He yawned, a wide, jaw-cracking yawn that lasted five full seconds.

”Eleven-thirty already,” Felix said, looking down at the slate’s corner clock. ”Time to brush my teeth, check the idle queues, and hit the sack. If this compression patch wants to take another half hour, it can finish while I’m asleep.”

He picked up his empty porcelain bowl, tucked the AetherDeck under his arm, and turned toward the cottage door.

Behind him, across the entire continent of Aethelgard, twenty thousand astrologers remained frozen in speechless terror, watching the stars of the universe continue to spin in perfect silver rings around his bedroom roof.
