Stellar Slacker: I Thought This Was an Idle Game!

Felix Vance woke up to a cheerful, urgent retro melody.

He pushed his wide-brimmed straw hat off his face, blinking against the warm afternoon sunlight.

In his linen pocket, the AetherDeck was vibrating with steady, rhythmic pulses.

Felix pulled the brass slate out and tapped the screen.

The four little 8-bit pixel sprites—the knight, the wizard, the archer, and the alchemist—had reached the end of Stage 2. They were standing outside a massive, pixelated skull-shaped archway glowing with bright orange fire runes:

[CATACOMB CRAWLER 8-BIT: BOSS ENCOUNTER!]

Stage 2: Floor 20 Final Chamber

Target: [Subterranean Fire Lord: Ignis the Primordial]

Boss Health Pool: 10,000,000 HP

Innate Defense: [Heavenly Molten Mantle]

• 95% Physical Damage Resistance

• 100% Fire Absorption (Converts fire attacks to heals)

Current Party Status: Full HP, Full Mana, Ready to Deploy

[1. ENGAGE BOSS BATTLE] [2. EDIT PARTY LOADOUT]

Felix stared at the boss stats, his mouth twitching into a deadpan grimace.

”Ten million hit points,” Felix muttered. ”Ninety-five percent physical resistance, and he absorbs fire. Classic lazy boss design. If you fight this guy the intended way, you’re sitting here spamming basic water spells for forty-five minutes.”

He tapped [EDIT PARTY LOADOUT].

”Fortunately,” Felix said, scrolling through his alchemist’s skill bar, ”indie developers always forget to code resistance caps for percentage-based damage-over-time.”

He equipped the little pixel alchemist with three specific consumables from his inventory: [Rotting Swamp Bile], [Corrosive Spore Pods], and a dropper of [Concentrated Golden Radish Sap].

When combined, the three items activated a well-known exploit: Stacking True Acid Decay.

Each stack dealt one point five percent of the target’s maximum health per second, completely ignoring all physical and elemental armor values. With four party members applying the debuff simultaneously, the stacks would multiply exponentially.

”Let’s see your molten mantle absorb basic arithmetic,” Felix said.

He tapped [ENGAGE BOSS BATTLE].

A digital combat timer flashed in the top-right corner of the screen: 00:00:00.

* * *

Fifty miles beneath the Eastern Continent, inside the deepest magma abyss of the planetary mantle, the air exploded with primordial fury.

The Chamber of the Eternal Furnace was a cavern three miles wide, domed with glowing obsidian stalactites.

At the center of a boiling lake of white-hot liquid stone, a colossal form rose from the depths.

It was the Subterranean Fire Lord, Ignis the Primordial.

The ancient fiend stood two hundred feet tall, forged from living black magma and crowned with twelve burning obsidian horns. In his right claw, he held the Flaming Trident of Cataclysm, an ancient sovereign-grade weapon that burned with the fury of a dying sun.

For fifty thousand years, Ignis had slumbered beneath the world, feeding upon the tectonic pulse of the continent.

”WHO DARES TREAD UPON THE ROOT OF FIRE?” Ignis’s voice shook the subterranean bedrock, sending shockwaves through five mountain ranges. ”MORTAL INSECTS! YOU STAND BEFORE THE UNCONQUERABLE INFERNO! BEFORE MY NINE-LAYER MOLTEN MANTLE, YOUR SWORDS ARE TOOTHPICKS AND YOUR SORCERY IS ASH!”

Ignis raised his Trident of Cataclysm to incinerate the chamber in a sea of apocalyptic flames.

Before he could swing the trident, the void above his head tore open with a faint, two-tone chime:

Bleep.

A tiny, square green bottle dropped out of the empty air.

It tumbled down through the heat, popping cleanly against the center of Ignis’s burning forehead.

SPLAT.

A thick, sticky, foul-smelling green sludge splattered across his obsidian crown. It smelled of rotting swamp cabbage, fermented vinegar, and stale compost.

Ignis blinked his four burning eyes in utter disbelief.

”A bottle?” Ignis rumbled, his fiery voice tinged with deep insult. ”A mortal dares throw kitchen slop at the Sovereign of the Under-Fire? Perish in—”

HISSSSSSSSSS.

The author’s tale has been misappropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.

The green sludge did not burn. It did not evaporate in the hundred-thousand-degree furnace heat.

Instead, the moment the sludge touched the living magma, it began to eat.

A ghastly purple-and-green acid fizzed across Ignis’s molten hide. Everywhere the acid spread, the primordial fire died. The ancient obsidian horns on his skull turned gray, brittle, and began crumbling into powdery ash.

A massive floating damage number flashed above Ignis’s head in glowing red numbers:

-1,500,000 HP!

Ignis gasped, a sound like a collapsing bellows.

”What... what is this poison?” Ignis screamed, clutching his melting throat. ”My heavenly mantle! My primordial flame! It is rotting from the inside out!”

-1,500,000 HP!

The combat timer in the void ticked to fifteen seconds.

Ignis’s two-hundred-foot body shrank by thirty percent. His black magma skin turned the color of diseased swamp mud. The terrifying Flaming Trident of Cataclysm rusted in his grasp, its prongs dissolving into flaky brown slag.

-1,500,000 HP!

Twenty-five seconds.

The great Fire Lord fell to both knees in his boiling lake. The boiling magma around him curdled, turning into a foul-smelling green stew that smelled distinctly of pickled radishes and rotten fungus.

”Stop! Stop it!” Ignis wailed, tears of liquid sulfur pouring down his dissolving cheeks. ”My life essence! My divine meridians! The acidity is devouring my core! Who commands such forbidden, putrid alchemy?”

-1,500,000 HP!

Thirty-five seconds.

Ignis had less than ten percent of his health remaining. His glorious burning crown had completely rotted away, leaving only a bald, weeping head of lukewarm clay.

The primordial terror of absolute annihilation seized his ancient soul. He threw his rusted trident aside and slammed his massive forehead into the boiling muck.

”I SURRENDER!” Ignis roared, his voice cracking with desperate, sobbing terror. ”I YIELD! I SUBMIT! SPARE MY IMMORTAL SOUL, O SUPREME VOID ALCHEMIST! TAKE THE THRONE! TAKE THE CONTINENTAL FLAME! TAKE EVERYTHING! JUST WASH OFF THE CABBAGE JUICE!”

At the forty-two-second mark, the acidic green cloud instantly dissolved into thin air.

The Chamber of the Eternal Furnace fell deathly silent.

The great Fire Lord lay prostrated in the cooling mud, trembling like a beaten dog, his sovereign pride completely shattered across forty-two agonizing seconds.

On the porch of Solitude Spire, the AetherDeck gave a triumphant, eight-bit fanfare:

[CATACOMB CRAWLER 8-BIT: VICTORY!]

Final Boss: [Subterranean Fire Lord: Ignis]

Result: ENEMY SURRENDERED / BOSS DEFEATED

Combat Time: 00:00:42 [NEW SPEEDRUN RECORD!]

Stage 2 (Levels 11–20): COMPLETE

[STAGE 2 MILESTONE REWARD READY TO UNPACK]:

Reward Tier: Heavenly Mechanical Vault Box

[1. UNPACK REWARD] [2. NEXT STAGE (LOCKED)]

Felix chuckled, shaking his head.

”Forty-two seconds,” Felix said, tapping his fingers against the brass casing. ”Percentage DoT is always broken on launch patches. The devs never balance test against poison stacking. Easiest clear of my life.”

He tapped [UNPACK REWARD].

THUD.

A heavy, dense metallic object materialized directly on the cedar side table beside Felix’s tea tray.

The cedar wood gave a sharp creak as the object settled. The side table tilted slightly under the sudden weight, but the 2.0-Earth-Mass terrestrial core resting inside Felix’s chest emitted a gentle counter-gravitational pulse that kept the table legs from snapping.

The object was a fourteen-inch cylinder forged from an iridescent midnight-blue alloy.

Its surface was polished to a mirror sheen, surrounded by twelve copper-colored magnetic induction rings. The central core of the cylinder hummed with a deep, contained vibration, giving off a pleasant warmth that smelled faintly of clean ozone.

A dark Inspector HUD tooltip snapped into focus over the cylinder:

【Item: Thermonuclear Compression Piston】 【Grade: Primordial Lost Technology (Tier 2)】 【Status: Functional / Requires Assembly】 【Compatible With: Ancient Thermonuclear Blueprint】 【Inspector Note: High-density magnetic compression piston forged from hyper-compressed neutronium. Capable of withstanding two million atmospheres of pressure without deforming. Perfect for condensing a terrestrial core into a main-sequence stellar furnace. Also works great as a heavy paperweight.】

Felix picked up the heavy metal cylinder with one hand, tossing it lightly in his palm before setting it back down.

”Nice build quality,” Felix said, nodding with mild approval. ”Solid metal. No seams. Goes with that blueprint from Stage 1. I still need the outer compression housing before I can assemble anything, but at least the drop wasn’t another bag of vegetable seeds.”

He rested the cylinder beside his empty tea cup, using it to pin down a stack of paper napkins that were fluttering in the afternoon breeze.

Beside him on the porch, Lyra Ashford stood frozen in utter, breathless terror.

Her violet eyes stared at the blue metallic cylinder with pure, unadulterated awe, her silver hair shining in the light.

She could feel the terrifying, concentrated gravitational force radiating from the artifact. That single cylinder possessed the mass of a sunken mountain range, yet Senior Brother had casually tossed it between his fingers like a wooden toy before using it as a paperweight to hold down napkins.

And more terrifying still was the cosmic announcement that had just resonated through her spiritual consciousness.

The Subterranean Fire Lord—an ancient primordial sovereign whose existence was recorded in the oldest imperial tablets as a calamity that once boiled the western seas—had been brought to its knees in forty-two breaths.

Forty-two seconds... Lyra thought, her mind spiraling into religious delirium.

The Great Fire Lord possessed ten million units of immortal life essence! An army of twenty thousand Golden Core cultivators could not pierce his heavenly mantle!

Yet Senior Brother simply sat in his floating chair, tapped his fingers against his slate, and deployed the Supreme Nine-Rot Void Toxin! He dissolved fifty thousand years of primordial fire without taking off his straw hat!

And his only reaction... is that the battle was ’too easy’!

Lyra slowly dropped to one knee upon the porch, clasping her hands before her chest.

”Senior Brother,” Lyra murmured, her voice trembling with boundless devotion. ”The Fire Sovereign has submitted. The subterranean flames of the world bow to your will. The cosmic mechanics of the heavens and earth are within your grasp.”

Felix looked down at her from under his straw hat, scratching his ear.

”It was just a cheese strategy, Lyra,” Felix said casually. ”Poison DoT exploits the AI’s health scaling. Anyone could do it if they read the patch notes.”

Patch notes... Lyra repeated the sacred, cryptic word in her heart, trembling with profound enlightenment. The Patch Notes of the Universe! The sacred celestial scriptures that govern the fundamental laws of reality! Only Senior Brother possesses the divine authority to read the flaws of the cosmos and exploit them for eternity!

Down in the yard, the Thunder Gryphon stretched its massive golden paws, letting out a sleepy bird-like chirrup.

It rolled onto its back in the clover, basking its belly in the warm afternoon sun next to the glowing Sun-Lotus Cabbage.

On the porch railing, Barnaby the clockwork owl did not twitch a feather.

The hand-carved oak bottle cork remained jammed firmly into his beak, sealing his ancient motivational programming. Barnaby held his dull copper coin clamped tight in his left talon, swiveling his head slightly to glare at the new metal piston on the table with cold, mechanical silence.

Felix Vance let out a contented yawn, leaning back into his Zero-Gravity Recliner.

”Stage 2 cleared,” Felix muttered, closing his eyes as the chair rocked gently in the mountain wind. ”Now that the speedrun is done... it’s time for my real afternoon nap.”

Within moments, the peaceful sound of his quiet breathing filled the Spire, guarding the tranquility of a world that had no idea how close it had come to the edge.
