When a Blade of Grass Wants to Become Immortal

Chapter 165: Chapter 161: Charming Fox Girl x Cold-Faced Wolf King 11 (Finale)

”Our Xiaosong... back then she was just a palm-sized little fox, and now...”

”Mother,” Ji Xiaosong suddenly tugged on her mother’s sleeve. ”I want to eat Roasted Deer Meat.”

The delivery room instantly erupted into a frenzy.

Feng Cangwu gazed at the golden-eyed infant in his arms. The little one was toying with a lock of his silver hair, the leaping Fox Fire in his palm and the howl of a wolf intertwining to form a totem unlike any seen before.

At the edge of the heavens, the Beast God Stele, which had been silent for ten thousand years, boomed as a new oracle appeared upon it. Every leaf in the Hundred Beasts Mountain Range trembled and whispered:

A new god is born, bringing eternal blessings and prosperity.

Feng Cangwu named the child Lang Tian. ”Tian,” meaning ”heaven,” signified ”everything.”

From a young age, Lang Tian was the treasured child of the Fox Clan and the Wolf Clan, showered with love.

Because of this, Feng Cangwu began training Lang Tian to become a Beast God as soon as he could speak.

By the time Lang Tian turned ten, he was already a qualified Beast God. However, no one could be told of this besides Ji Xiaosong and Feng Cangwu.

A Beast God survives on the faith of the people. He must remain a figure of mystery.

If his identity were revealed, it would disrupt the natural order of the world.

According to Feng Cangwu’s plan, once Lang Tian turned twenty, he would be able to leave the Wolf Clan and become a Beast God hidden from the world.

Finding an opportunity, Feng Cangwu summoned the newly twenty-year-old Lang Tian to his cave.

”Son, you are now twenty years old. Your mother and I wish to lay down our burdens and travel the world.”

Gazing at his heroic and dashing son, Feng Cangwu was very satisfied.

This son’s natural talent was on par with the child he’d had back in the Phoenix Clan; the only issue was that the Spiritual Energy here couldn’t compare.

If the Spiritual Energy here could rival the Phoenix Clan’s, perhaps Lang Tian could have even earned a place in the Upper Realm.

”Father, do you mean for me to inherit the position of Wolf King, or the position of Beast God?”

”The position of Wolf King should be returned to the Wolf Clan. The position you are to inherit is, naturally, that of the Beast God. However, once you inherit it, you can no longer appear before people at will.”

”Then why are you able to appear before people, Father?”

”I stayed in the Wolf Clan specifically to wait for your mother to arrive in my world.”

”Father, is the reason a Beast God can’t appear before people because they’re worried about altering fates and causing faith to collapse?”

”Yes, and no. Of course, that is the most important reason.”

”I believe there are pros and cons to this. As long as I can maintain control like you, Father, it shouldn’t be a major issue. And even if I can’t, the only thing I’d lose is my position as Beast God. I still have my cultivation and my Spiritual Power, so roaming the heavens and earth won’t be a problem. I don’t care about any of it. All I want is freedom.”

Lang Tian’s words gave Feng Cangwu pause, forcing him into deep thought.

After a long moment, he finally sighed. ”You are the only child I will have in this life, so only you can inherit the position of Beast God in the future. I will remain in this world for a long time yet; I can bear this responsibility in your stead for now. When the day comes that I am gone and the position passes to you, I will have no worries.”

His son was far more mature than he had imagined. He truly had no reason to worry.

After that, Feng Cangwu passed the position of Wolf King to Lang Tian. After succeeding him, Lang Tian held the position for twenty years before passing it on to another member of the Wolf Clan.

After Lang Tian became Wolf King, Ji Xiaosong and Feng Cangwu began to travel all over the Beast World Continent, collecting many of the world’s unique species along the way.

Another ten years passed. Ji Xiaosong was now one hundred and fifty years old, which was considered a rare long life for a fox in the Beast World.

Rongrong finally returned. She waited for a moment when Feng Cangwu was a few meters away, then transformed into a tiny snowflake and landed on Ji Xiaosong’s head.

”Song, I’m finally back. The banquet at the Turquoise Pool went on for so long. I’m dead tired.”

”Hurry and get some rest. Is it time for us to go to the next world?”

”Yes, yes, this body’s lifespan is almost at its limit, so we have to leave. But how did you provoke Feng Cangwu? Why isn’t he in the Phoenix Clan? What’s he doing here in the Beast World?”

”How should I know? In this life, he’s acting like a complete psycho, forbidding me from leaving and taking me with him wherever he goes.”

”What? I was planning to sneak you away! If he finds out, we’re both done for. He’s a powerhouse in the Phoenix Clan, equivalent to a god! It wouldn’t be impossible for him to open up a new small world and become its Heavenly Dao. This Beast World we’re in right now might very well be one of his small worlds.”

”Then... can I still leave? If I don’t, I won’t be able to complete any of my future missions.”

”Probably. We can wait until you’re both fast asleep and sneak away while he’s not paying attention?”

”No, he’ll go crazy again. What if he just captures me and brings me back one more time?”

”It shouldn’t be a big problem. You’re about to die of old age anyway. He might not even notice.”

Just as Rongrong said this with great confidence, Feng Cangwu returned.

”Song, why do you look so tired?”

”I’m probably just sleepy.”

The late spring moonlight draped over Stargazer’s Cliff, the highest point on Ice Ridge Mountain, like a bolt of silver gauze. Ji Xiaosong leaned against Feng Cangwu, counting the thinning foxtail flowers.

Her snow-white hair intertwined with her lover’s silver locks. The tuft of fur at the very tip of her tail trembled faintly with each breath, as if it might dissolve into stardust at any moment.

”Cangwu, look. This is where I buried the peach blossom wine ten years ago.”

She suddenly poked the rock beneath them with childish glee, but the Fox Fire that lit up her fingertip only managed to scorch half a patch of moss.

Feng Cangwu took her withered, bony hand and condensed his Spiritual Power into a silver-blue butterfly that landed on her wrist.

”I’ll retrieve it for you tomorrow. You can have as much as you want.”

”Tomorrow...”

Ji Xiaosong gazed at the river of stars flowing across the butterfly’s wings and suddenly chuckled. ”Do you remember that year you taught Lang Tian the Wind Control Skill? He fell into a mud pit and ended up looking like a little spotted leopard.”

Fine flecks of gold floated in the white mist of her breath as she spoke—a sign that her life force was beginning to scatter.

The hand hidden beneath Feng Cangwu’s wide sleeve suddenly clenched, but the person in his arms seemed not to feel the pain, tilting her head up to kiss his tense jaw.

”Yesterday, I dreamt of the hot spring where we first met. We spent such a long night in that spring back then.”

The night wind swept up the scattered peach blossoms at the cliff’s edge, and Feng Cangwu suddenly began to tremble violently.

He frantically pulled his cloak over his wife, only to find he couldn’t warm her body, which was gradually turning transparent.

A young wolf’s mournful howl echoed from the horizon. Twenty li away, the succeeding Wolf King was racing under the moonlight, but he was destined to be too late for this farewell that had been planned for a century.

”Don’t look.”

Ji Xiaosong raised a hand to cover her husband’s crimson eyes, her pinky finger subtly dissolving the snow crystal that was Rongrong. ”We promised. You have to send me off with a smile.”

As the first ray of dawn pierced the clouds, nine fluffy fox tails dissolved into fireflies, rising toward the morning sun.

Feng Cangwu remained kneeling at the cliff’s edge, his arms still in an embrace. A thousand li away, Lang Tian, who was in the middle of his succession ceremony, suddenly felt a sharp pain in his chest.

He stared at the shattered life lamp on the altar and, amidst the gasps of his clansmen, transformed into a silver wolf and charged toward Stargazer’s Cliff.

Along the way, all the beasts lowered their heads. In that instant, every foxtail flower of the Fox Clan withered and died.

「Three months later」

The new Beast God discovered a line of small words before the sacrificial stele, seemingly scratched in bit by bit with a fingernail:

”My little fox is just tired of playing. Once she’s done counting all the stars in the galaxy, she’ll come home, walking on moonlight.”

The offering of Roasted Deer Meat before the stele was still steaming. As the mountain wind swept past, the faint, triumphant laugh of a young woman seemed to echo in the air.
