From BOSS to Canon Fodder: She is Currently Out of Service!

”As for why the higher-ups made that decision, it was a special situation at the time, so I won’t elaborate. In short, we had a very intense debate about whether to save or not, and even ended in a complete fallout. Our paths are different; I could not betray the people I was loyal to, and she could not abandon her steadfast side...”

”Later, when the Insect War eased somewhat, the higher-ups of both sides fell out for some reasons. Su Jiameng, as the emerging combat power of that side, would be endlessly troublesome if she grew. The higher-ups issued an assassination order on her! I was unfortunate to have joined that operation, but... that woman’s combat power was strong enough to almost wipe us out...”

Gu Ningzhi felt melancholic, sensing that the relationship between these two was really complicated, and the inner circle truly chaotic!

”I was captured, Xiao Meng didn’t kill me, but I was severely injured and almost couldn’t recover.” Gong Yulu said so much, took a sip of tea, and continued, ”The higher-ups wouldn’t let Xiao Meng go; the second framing was successful. However, she also fled. Yet this time I received a new order to pursue her, fully prepared, with all the tools to deal with telekinesis...”

”And the result? You were counterattacked by her again?” Gu Ningzhi didn’t feel his wording was inappropriate at all.

”No, I won. She was almost strangled by me... really, just a breath away from saying goodbye to the world forever... but I let go in the end, she spared my life, and I returned the favor, leaving us with no debt to each other. Haha, actually, I was quite disappointed at that moment. I thought that with her resolute character, even at the cost of her life, she wouldn’t choose to escape in such a betraying manner...”

”Although I eventually learned she only went undercover to lay low, but... haha, her superiors were eliminated, and her crime was completely solidified, leaving no chance for a comeback.” Gong Yulu suddenly lowered her eyes, ”In retrospect, living a life completely out of one’s control, the happiest times were still those few years of cooperative combat. There was a kind of deceitfully real freedom.”

Gu Ningzhi was silent. Gong Yulu also mentioned that she was merely a puppet with erased memories, loyal to someone, without the freedom to make her own decisions. As a former heir of a prominent family, he had heard of some families training such death warriors.

They raise children from a young age, instilling thoughts of loyalty in them. Although Gong Yulu wasn’t trained from infancy, having her memories erased amounted to much the same thing. As for why the other side was able to shed the puppet identity, that was probably their secret.

”To really speak of it, she did spare my life once, but during battles, she saved me more than once... Sometimes I wonder, how great it would’ve been if time froze at that moment, or if we were simply on the same faction, that wouldn’t be so bad either...” Gong Yulu tightened her fists, ”Xiao Meng was ultimately strangled by the Alliance, but she used telekinesis to self-destruct, striking back at them before she went...”

”When she fled the Alliance, she left in such a hurry that she didn’t take Yongping. Later, Yongping fell into Han Yeming’s hands, and I beat that guy up and snatched the knife away.” Gong Yulu sneered, ”What right does that guy have to hold Yongping? He sweet-talked in his youth, promising her lifelong happiness, betrayed her feelings in their youth, and in middle-age, stood opposed with a blade...”

”Something happened to Xiao Meng, and he claimed he had no choice, that he had to consider a few children, becoming the main witness solidifying Xiao Meng’s crimes...”

”When Xiao Meng died, I was also feared by the higher-ups. In the end, to protect myself, I chose to retrieve my erased memories... otherwise, once that person gave the order for me to commit suicide, I would’ve had no power to resist. My past memories freed me from the shackles of being a puppet, but doing so completely infuriated the upper echelons... I remember being engulfed by an explosion, and when I woke up, I was saved by a little kid, whom I took as a disciple... After recovering, I realized what true change meant... everything was different.”

”For someone like me who used to be a puppet, my life was simple and obeying orders was my everything, but Xiao Meng was different in some ways. During those years she struggled alone, I paid attention to her. To be honest, I greatly envied her relentless determination and resilience to survive, yet I couldn’t emulate it. She was... my only friend...”

”In this world, she is also my only bond. I always thought, without the troubles of the past, there might have been a different life.” Gong Yulu tugged at the corner of her mouth, ”But the misunderstanding between her and me runs too deep. During her years of fleeing, I, under orders from the higher-ups, forced her into a corner several times, the hatred too profound. No wonder she tried hard to downplay ’Wu Su’ when writing this novel.”

”But you say you were a puppet and unable to resist orders, yet for Su Jiameng, you broke the law more than once...” Gu Ningzhi counted on his fingers, ”Not to mention, right from the first time you beat her, you could’ve strangled her but chose to let go...”

Gong Yulu quickly retorted, ”Wrong, I thought she was already dead at the time, so I let go...”

Gu Ningzhi was speechless, such a poor excuse wouldn’t fool a kid, right? A seasoned researcher unable to distinguish between the dead and the living? Such pride was unnecessary, was he teasing him!

”In the past, you two loved and fought, that’s fine, but now... you won’t be doing the same, right?” Gu Ningzhi asked softly.

”I have no reason to oppose her now...” Gong Yulu frowned and said, ”Besides, now I am Gong Yulu, not Wu Su, nor number 336073... and she is no longer the Lieutenant General Su Jiameng she used to be...”

”Since she could be a Lieutenant General, her mind should be complete, her intelligence above average, right?” Simply put, if she wasn’t careful, she might discover his real identity.

”I actually think... with Xiao Meng’s personality, even if she finds out, she’d probably pretend not to know, right?” Gong Yulu hit the nail on the head. (To be continued.
