Algorithm system

Good Man Gu XuanWhen Lin Yuan emerged from his advisor’s office, his mind was still in a daze.

It wasn’t because of the phishing OCR incident, but rather the audacious move Dean Li had just mentioned.

Lin Yuan momentarily couldn’t grasp how the positive matter of the ”one hundred thousand yuan” scholarship could instantly be turned by Dean Li into a point to disgust his advisor.

Moreover, Dean Li had clearly made a grand announcement about this matter at the matriculation ceremony, so how could he now, as a matter of course, use it as a javelin to throw at his advisor?

Although Lin Yuan knew this was a coordinated act between his advisor and Dean Li, how could Dean Li manage such a complete change of face regarding the same matter without finding it abrupt? If you do this, you have to make others believe it.

’Could it be?’

A thought surfaced in Lin Yuan’s mind, ’Is this how Dean Li and his peers operate daily?’

Praise on stage isn’t necessarily praise?

The more Lin Yuan thought about it, the more his head ached, so he simply gave up trying to understand.

However, Lin Yuan still needed to clarify the impact of Dean Li’s actions on himself.

Dean Li would use the pretext of being at odds with the advisor, then take the opportunity to disgust Lin Yuan, who was the advisor’s student. Then he would use the excuse of the Good Group’s one hundred thousand yuan scholarship being irregular to disgust the Good Group and force them to terminate their contract with him.

Of course, termination was not the goal of this move; the goal was to prevent the Good Group from extensively publicizing him.

And as for the Good Group? They didn’t want to publicize Lin Yuan extensively in the first place. They just wanted to hide Lin Yuan, at least until they successfully replicated the food delivery algorithm, they had to hide him well.

Therefore, the Good Group would absolutely not agree to Dean Li’s demand to expel Lin Yuan, but they would compromise by indicating to Dean Li: they would definitely not publicize Lin Yuan extensively. They might even hint at making things difficult for Lin Yuan, just to ask Dean Li not to make an issue of the one hundred thousand yuan scholarship.

Afterward, Dean Li would seize the opportunity, allowing Lin Yuan to maintain an invisible status within the Good Group.

Throughout this series of operations, all parties were concealing their actions, but each party was able to achieve its objectives.

Dean Li wanted Lin Yuan’s identity not to be exposed by the Good Group, so as not to affect his grand plan of phishing OCR.

And as for the Good Group, before the algorithm replication was successful, they certainly didn’t want the outside world to know about Lin Yuan’s existence, so as to avoid being poached by competitors.

So, the two seemingly clashing parties actually had the same selfish motives.

Ultimately, Lin Yuan would certainly be hidden by both parties as they wished.

What about Lin Yuan? He couldn’t ask for more.

Being able to remain invisible within the Good Group meant he could continue to keep a low profile. For a cheat, keeping a low profile is paramount. He had no intention of gaining fame through algorithms.

Moreover, in the eyes of his advisor and Dean Li, he was willing to remain anonymous for the greater good, making sacrifices for the overall situation.

What is a win-win? This is it!

Lin Yuan thought it over carefully, and it seemed there was more to it. The OCR side was also counting on money to corrupt him, and he wondered about the extent of this corruption. Lin Yuan felt a sense of bewildered amusement, like he was ”collecting wealth by imperial decree.”

---

The OCR side quickly provided Lin Yuan with an operating method. Of course, when the other party subsequently contacted Lin Yuan, they no longer used enterprise WeChat, which would overtly link to OCR, but rather a private mobile number.

According to the operating method provided by the other party, Lin Yuan took out a one hundred fifty thousand yuan WangDai loan on an obscure small platform. Then he transferred the money to the account provided by the other party.

The other party quickly gave Lin Yuan his first side job - to write a commercial website.

Lin Yuan understood that the first step of the other party’s trap would certainly appear very normal.

Lin Yuan used open-source software and completed the construction of this commercial website in just two or three days.

Commercial websites are already a mature product, with plenty of ready-made resources available online. Moreover, unlike e-commerce websites, they don’t require specific business details.

Therefore, Lin Yuan quickly submitted the code to the other party.

He also quickly received his first payment from the other party - five thousand yuan.

In less than three days, a simple website sold for five thousand yuan. Lin Yuan really wanted to laugh, why couldn’t they make it look more realistic?

Two days later, another side job came. This time, the side job was still fine; it was to write a set of customized mini-programs.

Lin Yuan saw that this situation would likely drag on for several more rounds. The OCR side was smugly setting a trap for him.

This process, however, could not be omitted, but Lin Yuan really didn’t want to waste energy on such matters.

Finally, he made a suggestion to his advisor - in the future, for such side jobs, find ghostwriters.

Because the Computer Science Department had no shortage of budding coders, Professor Zhang instantly understood, ”You, kid, want to do outsourcing.”

”Outsourcing the enemy’s phishing project, you’re the first one.”

Lin Yuan thoughtfully recommended a candidate - Gu Xuan.

Because Gu Xuan always had an air of ”I’m a top student” in daily life, Lin Yuan, in order to get a second authorship on an SCI paper, sometimes had no choice but to hold his nose and work with him in the lab. Every time, he had to endure Gu Xuan’s various showing off and flaunting of skills.

Gu Xuan, when looking at a piece of code, would want to explain everything from programming standards to algorithm theory.

But for Lin Yuan, a project like facial 3D structured light focused on algorithms and hardware; as long as the code ran, that was enough. What was the point of code standards? It wasn’t like an internet company doing a large-scale project.

Seeing that Gu Xuan had nowhere to expend his energy, Lin Yuan found him something to do.

Professor Zhang shook his head after hearing Lin Yuan’s suggestion, ”When a gentleman turns evil, he can make others willingly jump into a pit.”

Because Lin Yuan also suggested, ”Let Dean Li assign tasks to Gu Xuan.”

This was because Professor Zhang’s temperament was not suitable for such a deceptive act, and moreover, his usual persona did not fit the operation of giving students side jobs. But Dean Li’s persona was perfectly suited for it.

Dean Li was naturally happy to cooperate.

Professor Zhang did not stop Lin Yuan from doing this, because he also knew that Lin Yuan had been annoyed by Gu Xuan quite a bit in daily life. If it were him back in his student days, he would have long since confronted Gu Xuan. Therefore, he simply let Lin Yuan do as he pleased.

And what ultimately shocked Lin Yuan, what made his jaw drop, was: Dean Li told him that ”Gu Xuan absolutely refused to accept money.”

Even if Lin Yuan were a scoundrel, he couldn’t bring himself to freeload on Gu Xuan’s labor. A person of Dean Li’s stature couldn’t do such a thing either.

But Gu Xuan, in order to curry favor with Dean Li, absolutely refused to accept money. The reason was simple: he thought Dean Li valued him. Because Dean Li valued him, he gave him side jobs, so how could he possibly accept money?

”Brilliant!” Besides clapping his hands and shaking his head, Lin Yuan really didn’t know what else to say.

He decided to treat Gu Xuan as free labor from now on.

In the days that followed, Lin Yuan no longer took Gu Xuan’s taunts seriously.

Because Gu Xuan often had dark circles under his eyes, looking half-asleep. After all, he had to do side jobs, work on papers, and attend classes. Lin Yuan even felt a little sorry for him.

Of the two things Gu Xuan was busy with, Lin Yuan was getting a second authorship on the paper, and the side jobs were essentially free labor for Lin Yuan. Lin Yuan was almost moved to tears by him.

So, let Gu Xuan complain. If he didn’t say a few words, Lin Yuan would want to slap himself. He was being too inhuman!
