Chapter 849: Chapter 675: The Southern Emperor’s Procession

With deep-set eyes full of fire, Borjigin Nian glared at the two small white donkeys, gritting his teeth, “With these little donkeys, when will you ever make it back to Great Zhou? Even snails are faster!”

Gu Changsheng heard this and shook his head with smug satisfaction, one hand holding the horse’s reins and the other tugging the ropes of the two little donkeys, moving forward with unparalleled leisure and ease, “You don’t understand. As the saying goes, ‘Traveling ten thousand miles is better than reading ten thousand books.’ This northern journey isn’t just about returning; it’s an invaluable opportunity to hone my son and refine the child bride. How could we miss it?”

Borjigin Nian was speechless at his words.

Evidently, Gu Changsheng was not finished and continued, “Moreover, now half of the empire is under my control. I must see just how vast my territory is and how magnificent my realm, for freedom is so precious. Once on the imperial throne, one becomes isolated, just like being deep within the Marquis’s Household. Let me experience the feeling of breathing free air before I get married!”

Damn, she hadn’t forgotten that she was heading to Great Zhou to fulfill a marriage contract!

As the Empress of the Southern Country, fulfilling a past promise, it was indeed meant for marriage!

Marriage!

In both past and present lives, this was truly her first time getting married!

According to Gu Changsheng, she had a slight fear of marriage…

So, she conveniently stole two little donkeys from the Heavenly Palace!

This journey of Gu Changsheng’s had snuck out two days before the grand procession, but on the fourth day, due to Gu Changsheng’s laziness and the small donkeys’ slow pace, they unexpectedly came face to face with the grand procession on a side path…

The side path was two or three miles from the main road, and originally, Gu Changsheng and company wouldn’t have seen them, but the procession was simply too grand this time. It was as spectacular as an army passing through, with a magnificent scene stretching for dozens of miles!

“Look, look, it’s the Empress’s grand procession!”

Travelers along the side path, mostly ordinary folk, were also alerted by the commotion on the distant main road, and countless people stopped to watch from afar.

“Godfather, how grand! The Southern Country’s elite troops are all out. What a sight!”

“I heard that the Empress had a marriage contract from her time hidden in the Central Plains, and this visit to Zhou Dynasty is to fulfill it. The Great Swamp Mountain Palace has been collecting the Southern Country’s treasures for some time, and most are in this procession.”

“Naturally, if it’s our Empress’s grand wedding, the dowry can’t be modest. Had I known, I would’ve gathered and selected some heirlooms, maybe find one or two presentable items to offer.”

“Forget it. Even the treasures from the great clans are scrutinized before being accepted by the palace. How would a small household like ours catch the Empress’s eye? Even if we try, it’s tough!”

“True enough, but this grand procession is truly unprecedented. It shows how much the Southern Country values the Empress’s marriage!”

“…”

On the side path, the people watched in wonder and admiration.

On the main road, Hongyan Jiaojiao and other veteran ministers led a fifty-thousand-strong procession heading north.

Heaven help them, they couldn’t afford not to take it seriously. Their Empress had already fled; if they didn’t hurry and catch up, if anything happened to her, they’d be done for!

Because the grand procession was pursuing relentlessly, they hadn’t noticed, not far behind them on the side path, was a group resembling a noble’s entourage, regretfully watching the grand procession…

This entourage resembling a noble’s was none other than Gu Changsheng’s group!

“Damn! Did we just miss them?” Borjigin Nian looked at the spectacular procession with regret. If not for Gu Changsheng holding her back, she really wanted to rush over and bask in the attention.

“Ugh, how many people did they mobilize? I feel like the procession was far larger than initially planned!” Gu Changsheng said, watching the dust stirred by the end of the procession with endless distress.

“Well, duh, you dropped everything and ran. They’re definitely afraid something might happen to you, so of course, they brought more people to intimidate the North!” Borjigin Nian huffed indignantly, longing to shout after the procession to call them back!

But in the end, they just missed each other!
