Clan Rise: Starting as a Grandfather

Chapter 818: Chapter 612: Chen Zhaoxuan’s Death (2)

The eunuchs, maids, and old women at the rear followed closely, rushing out of the city gates. Although they seemed to be just a group of maids and old women, those who dared to rush out surely had something to rely on.

Guards, eunuchs, maids, old women, and even half-grown youths, all less than a hundred people, clenched their weapons and followed Chen Zhaoxuan outwards, guarding the two young masters without regard for their own lives.

At this time, the goodness Chen Zhaoxuan usually showed to others became evident, as the eunuchs and maids in the Royal Mansion were loyally devoted to Chen Zhaoxuan’s family.

”Stop them!”

The leader of the enemy troops outside the city discovered Chen Zhaoxuan and his group and immediately ordered.

Instantly, hundreds and thousands of enemy troops attacked Chen Zhaoxuan and his group.

Chen Zhaoxuan swung his long spear, carving a bloody path for his wife and children behind him.

The enemies blocking the front increased, but Chen Zhaoxuan’s long spear was like the scythe of death, slaying all enemy soldiers who came within a yard of him.

The speed of their charge slowed, and there were casualties among the eunuchs and maids at the rear.

However, the enemy soldiers at the front began to scatter.

Those enemy soldiers were not elite warriors and hadn’t reached the level of fierce fearlessness.

Faced with Chen Zhaoxuan, a God of Slaughter, they were panicked with fear and fled in all directions.

But Chen Zhaoxuan and his group also attracted the elite of the enemy troops.

A team of enemy cavalry, clearly different from the ordinary soldiers, charged in and crashed into the middle of the group.

”Chi’er!”

A sharp, mournful cry rang out, and Chen Zhaoxuan turned around abruptly, his eyes wide with shock.

He saw an enemy cavalryman with a sinister face slash down on his son.

”Ah!”

Chen Zhaoxuan let out a roar of anger, ”Charge forward!”

With that, he leapt from his horse, his spear thrusting straight into the chest of the sword-wielding enemy cavalryman.

With a squelch, the enemy cavalryman’s chest was pierced.

Chen Zhaoxuan caught his son’s body with one hand.

The fourteen-year-old boy had a bloody wound on his back.

”Cough, cough~~” Chi’er coughed violently, his body trembling rigidly.

”Father!”

Chen Zhaoxuan’s eyes were filled with fear.

He was afraid, afraid his son would die in front of him.

He was terrified, terrified he couldn’t save his own son.

Although he had earlier prepared for his whole family to perish in Dai State, at this moment, his heart twisted with pain.

”Chi’er~~”

The Princess Consort Dai fell from her horse, scrambling over, and hugged her son, sobbing loudly.

Chen Zhaoxuan looked at the Princess Consort Dai, wielding his long spear to fend off nearby enemy soldiers.

He then looked towards the guards and eunuchs still charging out, and his daughter being protected by Xiao Anzi and Liu Bin.

Somehow, his eyes had already filled with tears.

”Go, hurry, go!”

”Prince!” Xiao Anzi wanted to look back.

Liu Bin, slicing down an enemy soldier, seized the moment to shout to Xiao Anzi, ”Protect the Commandery Princess!”

Chen Zhaoxuan’s heart felt like it was bleeding, but he understood clearly that today his princess consort and son could not leave, and only his daughter had a slight chance of survival.

”My Lady!”

”Prince, kill them!” Princess Consort Dai screamed, her voice filled with hatred reverberating throughout the battlefield.

Chen Zhaoxuan again repelled the surrounding enemy soldiers and turned to look at the Princess Consort Dai behind him.

At this moment, the Princess Consort Dai had already placed their son’s body on the ground; their son had already died.

The Princess Consort Dai looked mournfully at Chen Zhaoxuan and suddenly placed the sword horizontally against her throat.

”Prince~~”

”Don’t!” Chen Zhaoxuan felt as if his heart had been pierced.

The Princess Consort Dai resolutely slit her throat with the sword, but her eyes lingered lovingly on Chen Zhaoxuan.

The sorrow in her heart was no less than Chen Zhaoxuan’s, but she understood even more clearly that she had become a burden to him.

She hoped Chen Zhaoxuan could avenge their son, but she hoped even more that he could escape.

”Hurry, go! Escape!” The Princess Consort Dai spoke her last words, then fell tragically into a pool of blood.

It was her son’s blood, staining her verdant clothes, mingling with her own blood.

”Ah~~”

Chen Zhaoxuan completely lost control. He looked at his wife and child lying on the ground, watched as the crimson blood dyed the yellow-brown earth, and his vision turned into a sea of blood.

He roared furiously, bellowing in anger.

His swinging long spear wildly reaped the lives of enemy soldiers one by one.

Waves of enemy troops scattered, only to be replaced by more waves advancing.

Suddenly, thousands of arrows rained down.

They struck his armor but failed to penetrate it.

However, the bodies of the Princess Consort and Chi’er were riddled with arrows.

Chen Zhaoxuan, like a madman, charged into the enemy ranks, slaughtering thousands of enemy troops alone in a frenzy.

”Kill, kill, kill~”

He murmured ceaselessly, his eyes a horrific shade of blood red.

He had no sense of how much time had passed or how many he had killed. Suddenly, a blade swung toward his abdomen, swift and fierce. Exhausted and unguarded, Chen Zhaoxuan took the blow directly.

The blade pierced his belly, and Chen Zhaoxuan fiercely swept out with his spear, sending the attacker flying.

Another long spear thrust forward, piercing through his shoulder.

”Ah~~”

He endured the spear with brute strength and viciously impaled the enemy soldier in front of him.

But at that moment, he fell.

The sunset’s afterglow dyed the sky red, with blood pooling into streams, as Chen Zhaoxuan lay on the ground, blood bubbling out from his mouth and nose.

His eyes still moved, searching among the corpses around him for his wife and child’s bodies.

But unfortunately, he was too far from his family’s bodies now.

More long spears pierced into his back, with pain dulling and his consciousness fading.

Gradually, his awareness disintegrated, dissolving with hatred and unwillingness.

The vast battlefield also quieted down.

King Da Liang approached, supported by his personal followers, his expression calm as he gazed upon Chen Zhaoxuan’s body and the sea of blood to his east.

A distance of three hundred feet was filled with jumbled corpses, resembling a road paved with bodies.

”Your Majesty, this man was truly formidable, managing to kill over a thousand of our brothers! Liu Laosan and Li Dadao were both slain by him!” an enemy leader said, with lingering fear in his heart.

King Da Liang said seriously, ”This should be Prince Dai from Dai State City. Take him to find a place to bury him.”

Chen Zhaoxuan was dead, and Dai State City had also fallen to the enemy troops, with tens of thousands of citizens plundered and countless killed by the enemy’s blades.

Liang Zhiman also perished, a scholar without the strength to even bind a chicken, dying under the chaotic blades of enemy soldiers.

Northeast of Dai State City, Xiao Anzi frantically rode on horseback with a comatose little girl in his arms. No one else was left beside him.

Liu Bin stayed behind with the remaining guards to cover their retreat, their fates unknown.

They rode for an unknown amount of time until their horses collapsed, forcing them to stop.

Xiao Anzi, whose real name was Fang An, was no longer young enough to be called Xiao Anzi, as he was now thirty-six years old.

With their horses exhausted, Fang An carried the Commandery Princess, traveling day and night toward the direction of Shanhe Province.

They hid and evaded their way, only entering Shanhe Province’s borders after three days.

The situation in Shanhe Province was considerably better than in Longnan Province, at least there were no rampaging enemy troops.

Upon their arrival in Shanhe Province, the news of Dai State City falling to the enemy and Prince Dai Chen Zhaoxuan dying in battle spread rapidly.

...

In the Imperial Study Room of the Imperial City in Capital City.

Chen Zhaojun sat behind the desk, his expression somewhat dazed.

His brother had died, dealing him a significant blow.

Since ancient times, rulers have been fickle in affection, with the most ruthless being the ruling family.

Sagas of father and son turning against each other, and brothers killing one another frequently played out in the royal family. In the face of absolute power, familial affection, a treasure to ordinary people, became almost worthless.

Chen Zhaojun was not a man of sentiment, but he held his brother in considerable regard.

Having a close brother without any ambition should have been Chen Zhaojun’s stroke of luck.

Yet now this dear brother was dead!

Chen Zhaojun suddenly felt a sense of powerlessness, an unprecedented helplessness.

He had done his utmost to change the situation of the court, but the results only worsened.
