Abandoned Woman Busy Farming

Chapter 577: Chapter 579: Good News Arrives

”I haven’t said anything yet,” Bai Ruozhu laughed playfully.

Bai Zepei also chuckled, ”Our brother and sister are of one heart and mind, I understand even if you don’t say it.”

That night, Bai Ruozhu had already put Dengdeng to sleep when she was suddenly woken up by a scream from the main hall. It was the old lady’s voice, this old lady was just too dramatic!

”Is everyone dead? I’m old and can’t move, and no one even brings me a basin of water to wash my feet?” The old lady started shouting at the top of her voice. She had actually been calling for Lin Ping’er earlier, but Lin Ping’er, who was already undressed and in bed in Bai Zepei’s room, completely ignored her.

The old Mrs. Bai was indeed tired from her long journey, she didn’t want to cause a fuss either, she simply wished to soak her feet but didn’t want to fetch water herself, mainly out of fear that Lin Ping’er would seize the main house while she was away. But the fact was, Lin Ping’er was already asleep, who had the time to play along with her endless fuss?

As she hesitated, she grew more tired and simply assumed the elder’s authority, demanding to be served, to her chagrin, her calls went unanswered.

In the end, she rolled her eyes and shouted, ”Where is Caiyue? Isn’t my eldest granddaughter-in-law going to serve me? Has she become so lazy the moment she stepped into the door?”

Wan Caiyue, in her room, was as uneasy as sitting on pins and needles, she jumped up at hearing this and was about to move to the door.

Bai Zehao grabbed her, saying, ”Don’t spoil her, if she stays here and everyone gets along in peace, no one will treat her unfairly, but she insists on creating such a fuss and spoils the peaceful day.”

”Can I ignore her?” Wan Caiyue asked worriedly.

”You go to bed and sleep, say you had a headache and went to bed early in the morning and didn’t hear any noise.” Bai Zehao suggested to Wan Caiyue.

Wan Caiyue thought about it and agreed that Old Mrs. Bai was going too far. Even though she was kind-hearted, she was not ignorantly dutiful. She took off her clothes and went under the quilt, choosing to sleep and pretending not to hear anything.

Old Mrs. Bai later shouted so miserably that she woke up the neighbours. An old man in the neighbouring yard who seemed to have a bad temper shouted, ”What foot washing in the middle of the night? What were you doing earlier? Make another peep and I’ll report to the authorities and have you taken away!”

Old Mrs. Bai opened and closed her mouth, in the end she didn’t dare to say anything and quieted down.

Bai Ruozhu listened to the commotion next door, seeing that it was quiet, she hushed Dengdeng back to sleep, but she wasn’t sleepy anymore.

She thought Old Mrs. Bai was the kind of person who was domineering only to her relatives, too scared of anyone who raised their voice in the outside world, especially afraid of people in Beiyu City. She wanted to be the matriarch of the second house but only ended up causing stress for everyone else. Couldn’t she just enjoy her old age by eating and living well?

The next morning, the wet nurse Li Ping’er had hired arrived but couldn’t enter the main hall, so she went to Bai Ruozhu’s room to nurse Dengdeng. The wet nurse thought the newly arrived old lady was strange, lying in bed even though the sun had already risen, and not allowing guests to go to the main hall.

Old Mrs. Bai started gossiping as soon as she saw the wet nurse, but this time she called Bai Yihong to ask questions.

”How much did you pay for that wet nurse?” The old lady straightaway brought up the subject of money.

”I’m not sure, it was all arranged by Zehao’s mother,” Bai Yihong answered honestly, men weren’t supposed to worry about such matters.

Old Mrs. Bai rolled her eyes and said, ”You’re not telling me that you don’t even know how much money your own family has, are you? People could sell you off and you wouldn’t even know it!”

Bai Yihong was somewhat annoyed when he heard this and muttered, ”The matter of managing the household is supposed to be a woman’s job, mother, you’re overthinking.”

The old lady’s voice rose a notch, ”How am I overthinking? Look at your pampered daughter, she’s started acting like a lady of the manor, ignoring her own child, and hiring a wet nurse, isn’t she afraid of straining her back by prancing about too much?”

”Mother, Ruozhu is on medication due to an injury and temporarily cannot nurse the child, she’ll be able to once she recovers in a few days,” Bai Yihong was starting to lose his patience.

”Humph, then don’t breastfeed him, the child is also six months old, right? Let him drink some millet gruel instead, wasting all that money, both of them are so delicate!” The old lady started shouting again, without bothering to ask how Bai Ruozhu got injured.

Bai Yihong became even more displeased, ”Mother, we can handle our own family matters, if you want to stay then do so comfortably, stop worrying needlessly.”

With that, he left the main house and continued to his backyard to go about his business.

Bai Ruozhu and Lin Ping’er in the room could hear Bai Yihong’s words, Bai Ruozhu winked at her mother and gave a thumbs up, whispering, ”Mother, my father is quite firm now, you must praise him later.”

Lin Ping’er nodded vigorously, ”Definitely, your father spoke really well just now.”

The old lady in the main hall started causing a commotion again, saying the same things over and over, complaining that her son was ungrateful, her daughter-in-law treated her badly, and that they wanted to drive her to death.

Fortunately, the place they lived in was a somewhat remote part of Beiyu city, if not, with her causing such a fuss everyday, she would surely disturb the neighbours.

Probably because no one cared about the old lady, she began calling Wan Caiyue again, wanting to order Wan Caiyue around. Seeing that Wan Caiyue didn’t appear, she started grumbling that Wan Caiyue was putting on airs and it wasn’t proper for a new bride to get up so late.

Lin Ping’er glanced at Bai Zehao’s room and muttered, ”Your sister-in-law usually gets up quite early, she mustn’t be ill from the journey, right?”

Bai Ruozhu thought about it and it was indeed possible. The cold weather during the journey could easily lead to a cold, and being ordered about by the old lady only added to the exhaustion.

”I’ll go check on her,” Bai Ruozhu said as she slowly got up.

Lin Ping’er nodded, picked up the now-bottle-fed Dengdeng, and said, ”I’m going over to Aunt Zhou’s place to check.”

Bai Ruozhu walked to the main house’s entrance. Just as she was about to enter, her older brother rushed out and almost ran into her. She jumped in shock, if her older brother had collided into her, her internal injuries would have had to be treated all over again.

Bai Ruozhu looked at her elder brother. Her brother wasn’t usually so reckless, was he?

”Ruozhu, I was just about to find you, could you please check on your sister-in-law? This morning, I called her twice and she’s still drowsy, you know her character, she doesn’t have a habit of lying in bed,” Bai Zehao said anxiously.

Bai Ruozhu nodded and followed her elder brother into the room. As expected, Wan Caiyue was still asleep, but it was a restless sleep, one where she seemed to want to wake up but was too weak to do so.

She checked her sister-in-law’s pulse and quickly showed a delighted expression.

”Elder brother, it’s good news, your wife is pregnant!” Bai Ruozhu exclaimed excitedly, ”Mother is going to be overjoyed, right?”

Bai Zehao stood stunned, only after a few seconds did he nervously ask, ”What did you say? Your sister-in-law is pregnant? How long has it been? Is her health not good right now?”

”Probably more than a month, she probably didn’t notice it because of the hardships on the road, and she didn’t pay attention to her period. But her body is weak and she’s pregnant, that’s why she can’t get up, you mustn’t let grandma torment her. I’ll have mother prepare some tonics for her to recuperate, and she’ll be fine in a few days,” Bai Ruozhu was also very happy right now, she was going to have a little nephew!

Lin Ping’er soon learned of this news, immediately clapped her hands together and thanked the Gods, she was beyond excited.
