Chapter 418: Chapter 418: Dentist’s Sense of Responsibility

Meng Liangshen asked a few more questions about Bai Zepei’s studies. Bai Zepei’s calm and meticulous responses left Meng Liangshen extremely satisfied.

Then, Meng Liangshen turned to Bai Ruozhu and said, ”I heard from Officer Yi that you are moving to Beiyu City. Since Officer Yi isn’t often in Beiyu City, I will arrange for the doctors sent by the Imperial Court to learn your unique skills.”

Bai Ruozhu managed to contain her shock. Officer Yi? She subtly glanced at Jiang Yichun, who was looking at her as he said, ”It seems that you’ll need to move to Beiyu City before the group of medics can arrive. Your reward will probably arrive with them.”

Both Bai Ruozhu and Bai Zepei were taken aback since that voice was not Jiang Yichun’s!

Fortunately, both of them were composed enough not to show their surprise.

Bai Ruozhu was certain that the man before her was Jiang Yichun, as he had just smiled at her. Even though she couldn’t see his face behind the mask, she was all too familiar with his eyes.

It appeared that Jiang Yichun didn’t want Meng Liangshen to know his real identity, or perhaps he had always disguised his voice when interacting with Meng Liangshen.

She bowed slightly to both men, ”I am grateful for your kindness, City Master.”

”Once your family moves to Beiyu City, I will assign someone to protect you covertly. As for teaching, it will also be done in private. You must also do well in keeping this a secret,” Meng Liangshen reminded her.

”Yes, I have made note of it,” Bai Ruozhu replied, bowing again to Meng Liangshen.

Meng Liangshen, seeing he had said all that needed to be said to the duo, told them, ”You can go now. If there’s any difficulty in Beiyu City, feel free to seek my help.”

Both Bai Ruozhu and Bai Zepei were thrilled at this offer. After all, the words of a chief officer were never just jests. Besides, Meng Liangshen did not strike them as a person to give empty promises. He had said they could ask for help in times of need, he would unquestionably provide it.

Of course, they wouldn’t dare bother him with minor issues. However, his assurance ensured that the Bai family would be much safer in Beiyu City. Families like the Du family would not dare mess with them.

As for others, they too would need to think twice.

With a promise from Officer Meng, Bai Ruozhu joyfully excused herself and, along with her brother, left the study.

Just then, a housemaid rushed to the door of the study and said from the outside, ”Sir, the mistress’s toothache is unbearable again. She asked you to find the ointment from the last time.”

”Tell my mother that the medicine was something I happened upon. I’ve tried to find the traveling doctor who gave it, but to no avail. If the pain is too much, probably the best solution is to remove the tooth,” Meng Liangshen said with a sigh.

Jiang Yichun stood and said, ”I have nothing else to do, so I’ll take my leave now and let you tend to Madam Meng.”

Officer Meng nodded at him, and together they left the study. To the housemaid, he said, ”I’ll come with you to see my mother.”

Bai Ruozhu had stopped, considering whether intervening would seem intrusive. However, imagining an old lady suffering from toothache and having no other solution, she felt a sense of responsibility as a dentist from her past life. She couldn’t bear to stand aside.

Of course, if it would foster a good relationship with the Meng Residence, why not help?

Bai Ruozhu hinted at Bai Zepei with her eyes. Understanding her meaning, Bai Zepei nodded subtly, showing his agreement.

”Officer Meng, I am knowledgeable about dental treatments and have developed a herbal ointment for teeth cleaning, which is now being sold in partnership with the Du family, and has probably made its way to Beiyu City,” Bai Ruozhu said, carrying Dengdeng and walking back a few steps.

”If it’s convenient, why not let me take a look at the old lady’s teeth? I might be able to alleviate her pain. Actually, it’s not advisable to extract teeth when the pain is severe. It risks aggravating the inflammation,” Bai Ruozhu continued.

Traditional Chinese medicine does not have the concept of inflammation. Tooth pain is generally described as an invasion of wind-heat, external heat invasion or unresolved internal heat which equates to ”inflammation”.

Jiang Yichun also chimed in, ”Miss Bai is a highly skilled doctor, consulting her for the issue is definitely the right decision.”

Officer Meng was very pleased upon hearing this and immediately stated, ”Then we will have to trouble Miss Bai.”

Bai Ruozhu bowed slightly, ”It’s my duty.”

Bai Zepei carefully took the sleeping Dengdeng from her arms, while Jiang Yichun out of habit was about to reach out to hold the child, but ended up refraining because of Liangshen’s presence.

However, he wasn’t in a rush to leave, he decided to accompany Bai Ruozhu to see how she treated the patient.

The group walked toward the inner courtyard. Officer Meng said while walking, ”It turns out the toothpaste sold by the Du Family was developed by you. I’m actually using it, and it indeed is good stuff.”

”You flatter me, Officer. It’s just a minor technique,” Bai Ruozhu modestly said. For people at this time, toothpaste was quite replaceable. Definitely not as unique as the suturing technique.

Coincidentally, Mr. Du of the Du Family is being educated by Professor Xie, hence being a schoolmate to your second brother. It really is quite a coincidence that you guys did business together,” Officer Meng chuckled.

Bai Ruozhu thought for a moment and said, ”Originally, the contract was signed with Mr. Du Zhongshu.”

Officer Meng laughed upon hearing that, ”It seems that Du Zhongshu is indeed a promising young man with a discerning eye.”

Jiang Yichun on the side shot Bai Ruozhu a deadly glare. Bai Ruozhu’s mouth twitched, thinking to herself that no one should get this jealous that easily. She was simply helping Du Zhongshu to avoid all the family strife and battles so that their business cooperation could continue.

Quickly, they arrived at Lady Meng’s yard. Even before entering the room, they could hear the old lady moaning and groaning in pain. Given Lady Meng’s background, it must have been unbearable for her to make such noises.

Bai Ruozhu sped up her steps, seeing which, Officer Meng hurried to catch up, a look of approval flashed in his eyes.

”Mom, I found a famous doctor to see your tooth. You just need to endure a little longer,” said Meng Liangshen, as he entered the room.

Bai Ruozhu bowed to Madam Meng and immediately said, ”Please, open your mouth wide.”

Lady Meng was taken aback. She thought the doctor her son mentioned was the one who always wore a mask. She didn’t expect it to be this girl who was barely twenty. Also, her son had found a renowned doctor so quickly, even before the messenger she sent had a chance to report back.

However, she was in so much pain that she barely had the strength to think, she would even let them pull her tooth out right now to relieve the pain.

Hence, upon hearing Bai Ruozhu’s instruction, she obediently opened her mouth wide.

Bai Ruozhu slightly turned her body to let the light shine into Lady Meng’s mouth. It was easy to spot the decayed tooth. No wonder Lady Meng was in so much pain; the tooth was decayed all the way to the root, exposing the tooth nerve. A slight trigger would cause severe pain, and now it was inflamed, how could it not hurt?

”The painful tooth is the last one on the right side, isn’t it? In the past few days, eating cold or hot food would be painful. Even slightly hot tea would cause pain, and when it starts to hurt, the pain extends to half of your face. Is that correct?” Bai Ruozhu asked.

Lady Meng revealed a surprised expression and nodded while her mouth was still open. This woman must be a divine doctor, she thought.
