Chapter 410: Chapter 253: Wu Ting’s Firmness: Sorry, Not Interested

After leaving the patient’s room at Xiao City Xin’an International Hospital, Director Ma sent Wu Ting a message to apologize.

”Director Wu, I’m truly sorry about what happened today. I didn’t expect it to turn out like this. My original intention was just to invite you for a consultation, if it was appropriate, so you could earn a nice expert fee... That Li Tian is just a spoiled rich kid, and he’s used to being arrogant. What he said was a bit nasty. Please don’t take it to heart, Director Wu.”

”To be honest, I really admire your personality and attitude, Director Wu. I could never be that firm. My respects! I hope we’ll have more chances to talk in the future.”

...

...

After arriving at the Cardiac Surgery Department, Wu Ting went straight to the conference room.

Director Shao and Shen Siyuan were already there, along with several other doctors from the department.

Wu Ting was already quite familiar with Huang Dian. There were also two other attending physicians,

Dr. Cao Yang and Dr. Yao Mengjie, both of whom would be coordinating with Wu Ting’s team.

The two doctors had heard of Wu Ting before and were very curious just how skilled he could be in the field of cardiac surgery.

After all, even though Wu Ting studied under Shen Siyuan, his focus had been on Hepatic Tumor Surgery and immunology. They had never heard of him doing any research into related cardiac surgeries.

So, when Director Shao told them that Wu Ting had performed a blind Pericardiocentesis in an ambulance, they were all astonished.

Seeing Wu Ting arrive, Director Shao immediately had Huang Dian give him the patient’s file.

”The patient is 42 years old. He presented with paroxysmal shortness of breath one week ago and has had chest tightness for over two months. Symptoms mostly appear when walking briskly and improve after a few minutes of rest. No chest pain, palpitations, cough, hemoptysis, or dizziness. His activity tolerance has gradually decreased, and he is unable to lie flat at night...”

”The patient was hospitalized at Fan City First Hospital half a month ago. An echocardiogram revealed aortic stenosis. He responded well to conservative drug therapy and showed some improvement. He no longer experiences paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea and can sleep while lying flat, but he still gets short of breath when walking briskly...”

”One week ago, his symptoms worsened again, and he was diagnosed with severe aortic valve stenosis and an enlarged heart... He was transferred to our department the day before yesterday...”

As Director Shao explained, he also highlighted the main difficulty with this patient’s case:

”The patient’s ascending aorta is dilated and the valve leaflets are severely calcified... With a conventional aortic valve replacement, it will be very difficult to deliver the new valve. The slightest mistake could damage the aortic wall...”

While listening to Director Shao’s explanation, Wu Ting examined the imaging data and confirmed the problem.

This was also a key challenge in the second stage of treatment for Lou Musaang, who had complex cardiovascular malformations combined with aortic calcification.

Of course, compared to this patient, Lou Musaang’s condition was far more complex, and the difficulty was exponentially higher.

Director Shao and the others hoped that this case might give them some ideas for how to treat Lou Musaang.

With his current level of expertise in cardiac surgery, Wu Ting couldn’t think of any suitable solution.

Shen Siyuan was clearly in the same boat as Wu Ting; she didn’t have any immediate ideas either.

However, she explained to Wu Ting with an optimistic air:

”Our team doesn’t have a good approach right now, but we’ve specially invited Director Pang from Jinggang University Affiliated Second Hospital for this consultation. Director Pang specializes in the delivery systems used for aortic valve replacements. When he arrives shortly, we’ll see what he proposes.”

Just as Wu Ting finished familiarizing himself with the patient’s case, Director Pang arrived at the conference room.

Everyone rose to greet him, and they exchanged a round of polite pleasantries.

Director Pang looked at the young Wu Ting and offered a few words of encouragement.

”Dr. Wu, you’re every bit as young and promising as they say. I watched the live broadcast of your national debut of the fourth-generation bioresorbable polymer stent very carefully. I was thoroughly impressed.”

”I heard from Director Shao that you’re preparing to enter this year’s National Cardiac Surgery Skills Competition. He also mentioned that you’ve already submitted the video of the first-stage stent surgery as your entry for the preliminary round. That’s commendable courage!”

Director Pang was a strong proponent of outstanding young doctors from Jin Province participating in such national competitions, which was one of the reasons he had come to the consultation today. He hoped to use his decades of accumulated experience and insight to offer the young man some inspiration and guidance.

Director Pang carefully reviewed the patient’s case and quickly formed an idea. However, before sharing his thoughts, he decided to test Wu Ting to gauge his knowledge of aortic valve replacement procedures.

”Director Wu, what do you know about aortic valve replacement surgery? Tell us your thoughts.”

Director Pang’s tone was casual, but he was secretly observing. He wanted to gauge Wu Ting’s level of understanding so he could offer more targeted guidance.

Wu Ting wasn’t fazed. He calmly and coolly began to discuss his understanding of the procedure.

Nearby, Huang Dian, Cao Yang, and Yao Mengjie also listened in silence. They, too, were curious. What kind of skill and confidence did this young prodigy—so much younger than them and entering the national competition on the strength of his groundbreaking bioresorbable polymer stent—truly possess?

In fact, these junior doctors shared the opinion of many others in their field: even if Wu Ting made it to the national finals, it would largely be due to the advantage his stent provided. But after getting in on the back of his invention, the competition would still come down to a test of fundamental skills, clinical reasoning, and a true understanding of the relevant Surgical Techniques.

If Wu Ting planned to rely solely on this invention, it would be impossible for him to advance any further.
