Chapter 221: Rumors ( 18 )

Hearing her husband’s question, Xue Ya’er replied, ”It’s only been a few months. He is the one who donated grains, vegetables, and meat to the army. He is also the person who gave me Sha Wu Hen powder. Today, he came to sell pelts, dried mushrooms, and preserved eggs.”

After a moment of pause, Xue Ya’er continued, ”I promised him long-term cooperation if he was able to provide 20,000 more pelts. With a total of 30,000 pelts, the General wouldn’t have to worry about the soldiers’ armor anymore.”

When he heard his wife’s polite yet distant tone, Lu Qianxuan felt irritated. He frowned and asked, ”Ya’er, I’m your husband. Must you treat me like a stranger?”

Hearing this, Xue Ya’er finally looked at him and asked, ”General, you know clearly that our marriage was never based on love. I’m doing my best to fulfill my responsibility as the Matriarch.”

”Since I can’t bear you a son, I took the initiative to add someone to your backyard. Isn’t this what you want? What more do you want from me?”

Meeting his wife’s calm gaze, Lu Qianxuan suddenly felt panicked. He lowered his gaze and said, ”I never blamed you or asked you to become a good wife.”

”Then what do you want me to do? Doing whatever I want and bearing the bad reputation?” Xue Ya’er asked. Taking a deep breath to calm down, she continued, ”It has been five years, and I have long understood my position in your heart.”

”Lu Qianxuan, you showed me through your actions and words that I’m nothing more than a pawn in this political marriage. I know it, and I’ve learned my lesson. Therefore, can you please just do what you should do and leave me alone?”

”If you feel that I took your beloved’s position, you can divorce me and marry her as your legal wife. You don’t have to worry about our family’s agreement.”

”When I return to my parents’ house, I will inform my father and make sure that nothing will change. My family will continue supporting you and the White Tiger Army, while you ensure the safety of my Xue family.”

As soon as she finished her words, Lu Qianxuan stared at her in disbelief. He reached out and grabbed her shoulders. ”What did you say? When did I—”

Before he finished his words, Xue Ya’er pushed his hands away and said, ”You might not think that you did anything wrong, but your cold treatment, your indifference, your ignorance, all of these show me who I am to you.”

”After five years of marriage, do you even know what dish I like or dislike? Do you even know when my birthday is? Do you even know what my hobby is?”

”You know nothing. If you aren’t even interested in knowing me, what makes you think that I will believe I’m important to you?”

After her long barrage, Xue Ya’er suddenly felt tired. She let out a self-deprecating chuckle and muttered softly, ”In your eyes, I might not even be as important as one of your soldiers.”

When he heard this, Lu Qianxuan’s heart sank. He reached out and held his wife’s hands tightly. When she struggled to free her hands, he tightened his hold and refused to let her go.

”Ya’er, you are wrong. I never thought you were not important,” he said.

”I know that I have neglected you all these years, and I’m sorry. You can hit me, scold me, but don’t say those words. I love you. I really do love you.”

”From the first time I saw you, I fell for you. But all these years, I didn’t dare to get close to you because I knew that you had someone you loved. I didn’t want to force you. Therefore, I rarely returned home. I didn’t want to make you hate me.”

”But Ya’er, now I understand that no matter how magnanimous I want to be, I can’t do it. When I saw you laughing and smiling at that person, I wanted nothing more than to kill him.”

”After our wedding night, you have never smiled at me like that. I don’t know what I did wrong, but I’m willing to accept any punishment as long as you can forgive me. Ya’er, can you please stop pushing me to another woman and let me stay by your side?”

When she heard this, Xue Ya’er was stunned.

There was indeed someone in her heart, but it had been years, and she no longer remembered his face. From the moment she agreed to this marriage, she had stopped wishing to meet with that little brother again.

After a moment of silence, she said, ”But that woman said that you are engaged to her.”

”Ya’er, I will give you an explanation after I investigate this matter. I promise to never hide anything from you. Please give me a chance to prove myself,” Lu Qianxuan said.

Noticing the pleading in her husband’s tone, Xue Ya’er’s heart wavered. She lowered her head and thought for a long time. When Lu Qianxuan thought that she would refuse, she suddenly nodded and said, ”Alright.”

Hearing this, Lu Qianxuan heaved a sigh of relief and pulled her into his embrace. He buried his face in his wife’s shoulder and whispered, ”Thank you, Wife.”

At the same time, Yao Zhi was standing near the General’s mansion entrance while waiting for Luo Bo and his brothers to deliver the goods. While waiting, she chatted with the guards.

”Brother, are you saying that the rumors about the General and his wife are fake?”

One of the guards nodded and replied, ”Young Master Lei, you might not know, but our General only has Madam. He doesn’t even have a maid serving in his bedchamber, let alone women outside. Everyone in the army knows how much our General cares about Madam.”

”If that’s the case, then how did their relationship become so estranged?” Yao Zhi asked in confusion.
