Chapter 219: Rumors ( 16 )

Hearing the General’s harsh words toward Xue Ya’er, Yao Zhi couldn’t hold back anymore and took a step forward to block his sharp gaze.

Being blocked by him, Lu Qianxuan narrowed his eyes and said, ”I’m talking to my wife. Get out of the way.”

Yao Zhi smiled and replied coldly, ”So the General also knows that Madam is your wife. I thought the General didn’t know and therefore treated Madam like this.”

”It’s my personal matter how I treat my wife. It has nothing to do with you.”

”It’s indeed the General’s personal matter, but as Madam’s friend, I can’t just stand aside and do nothing when I see her being wronged,” Yao Zhi replied.

”Friend? What kind of friend are you? Are you worthy?!”

Before Yao Zhi could reply, someone entered the hall in hurried steps and knelt down. She looked at the woman who cried so pitifully and raised her eyebrows.

”General, I finally see you,” the woman wept and said hoarsely.

Lu Qianxuan frowned when he saw her and asked, ”Who are you?”

The woman looked at him with shock and disbelief. After a moment, she took out the jade pendant and said, ”General, I’m your betrothed. Back then, your Grandmother and my Grandmother made a promise to let me marry you. This jade pendant is our engagement token.”

When Lu Qianxuan saw the jade pendant, his eyes widened in surprise. He looked at the jade pendant hanging on his sash and realized that it was a pair with the one owned by that woman.

Knowing that this situation was bad, he instinctively looked at his wife.

He thought that he would see his wife’s angry or sad expression. But when he looked at her, all he saw was cold indifference. She didn’t even glance at him and lowered her head, as if everything that was happening had nothing to do with her.

His heart clenched, and he felt a sharp pain, as if he were stabbed by countless needles. He opened his mouth to explain, but when he met his wife’s calm gaze, he couldn’t utter a word.

After a long silence, Xue Ya’er finally said, ”Since this is the General’s private matter, I won’t interfere. I promise this lady that I will let the General make the decision.”

Hearing this, Lu Qianxuan clenched his fists tightly and asked, ”Madam, what do you mean by that?”

Taking a deep breath, she finally met her husband’s gaze and replied, ”Whether the General takes her in as a concubine or as a second wife, I won’t have any objection.”

The moment he heard his wife’s words, Lu Qianxuan felt his breath get stuck in his chest. He gritted his teeth and said, ”I’m your husband. Are you that impatient to push me toward another woman?”

Xue Ya’er smiled and forced herself to stay calm. But under her sleeves, her nails had pierced her palm and drawn blood, yet she showed nothing on her face.

”General, we have been married for five years, but I can’t bear a son for you. This is the most unfilial act as a wife. Despite this, you still treat me with respect, and I’m grateful for that. But as the matriarch of this family, it’s my duty to ensure the continuation of the family lineage.”

”I should have taken the initiative to prepare more people to serve you. But due to countless reasons, it was delayed until now. Now that your childhood sweetheart is here, it’s only right for me to help you add another member to the family and expand the branches.”

As soon as she finished her words, Lu Qianxuan threw the teacup to the ground. It shattered with a sharp, loud sound.

”Ah!” the woman screamed in fear as the shards almost hit her eyes.

At the same time, Lu Qianxuan roared angrily, ”Xue Ya’er!”

Being shouted at, Xue Ya’er flinched but kept her head up. She didn’t understand why he was so angry. All these years, he had shown her through his actions that he would never have any romantic feelings toward her.

Despite her heart being broken again and again, she still hoped that he would one day see her goodness and love her. But the moment she saw this woman and her jade pendant, she no longer had the courage to hold on to that hope.

Rather than become a woman who lost herself due to hatred and jealousy, she would rather focus on her duty as his wife.

Without love, there would be no pain or disappointment. As long as she no longer loved him, she wouldn’t have to feel that heart-piercing pain anymore.

After reaching this conclusion, she felt strangely at ease. It might be hard to let go, but once she took the first step, it was not as difficult as she had thought.

She curtsied to her husband and said, ”General, if there is nothing else, I won’t bother you two any longer. I still have matters to attend to and can’t serve you. Please excuse me.”

As soon as she finished her words, she turned around and walked out without waiting for her husband’s response.

Seeing this, Yao Zhi glanced at the General and the woman before she cupped her fists and said, ”General, this commoner will take my leave first.”

After a moment of pause, she added, ”The General can rest assured that I will never speak a word about what happened today to others.”

Before leaving, she gave him a provocative smile and quickly chased after Xue Ya’er. ”Madam, please slow down. The road is slippery, be careful of falling.”

Lu Qianxuan’s eyes were bloodshot as he stared at the young man’s back. If eyes could kill, he might have turned into mincemeat on the spot.

”How dare he talk so intimately with Ya’er. She is my wife!” he roared in his mind.

Despite his urge to kill someone, he still had his senses and controlled himself. Before he explained to his wife, he had to solve this problem first.
