The other side of Reincarnation

”Can I ask you something,” Sophia said, a few days later, finding me alone at my parents’ gravestone — a place I’d taken to visiting more often since learning the full weight of what it actually memorialized.

　”Go ahead.”

”This,” she said, gesturing at the stone. ”Your parents. The reports mentioned you as an anomaly, a threat, a power to be contained. They never once mentioned you as someone who visits his mother’s grave.”

Reports rarely capture the actual person underneath the label. Learned that the hard way, more than once.

”My mother gave up everything she was,” I said, ”to protect a world that never knew what she’d sacrificed for it. My father loved her enough to stay, even trapped on a mountain neither of them chose. I’m not just a threat your institution decided to fear. I’m their son, first. Everything else came after.”

Sophia was quiet a long moment, studying the inscription carefully.

”The Church taught me that anomalies are inherently dangerous,” she said, finally. ”That whatever breaks the world’s established order must, by definition, threaten it. I’ve spent my entire career believing that, without much question.”

　”And now?”

”Now I’m considerably less certain,” she admitted. ”You’ve broken more of the world’s established order than anyone I’ve ever encountered, and yet everything I’ve actually witnessed here suggests the opposite of danger. Protection. Community. People who chose to stay, freely, rather than being compelled to.”

She’s actually listening. Actually reconsidering, rather than just performing politeness while she waits to leave.

”What will you tell them,” I asked, ”when you go back?”

”The truth,” she said, without hesitation. ”Same as I’ve always tried to give, even when the truth was inconvenient for whoever was asking. Cassmoor’s true nature. What I actually witnessed here. Whatever consequences that honesty costs me personally.”

”That might not be a popular truth,” I said. ”Might not be one your own institution wants to hear.”

”No,” she agreed. ”It rarely is. Doesn’t make it less necessary to say.”

I respect that. Genuinely. Whatever else she is, she’s not someone who bends the truth for convenience.

”I have one more question,” she said, before we parted that evening. ”If I do return — if I carry this truth back to my own people — what happens to us? To whatever exists between Horizoncrest and the Church, once the dust from all of this actually settles?”

Good question. Wish I had a confident answer.

”I don’t know,” I admitted. ”I’d like peace, if peace is actually possible. I’m not interested in conquering Ashford, or destroying the Church outright, whatever your own reports assumed about my intentions. I just want to be left alone to build what I’m building, without armies marching toward it every few years.”

”That’s a reasonable request,” Sophia said. ”Whether my own institution is capable of granting it — that, I genuinely can’t promise you.”

”Fair enough,” I said. ”I’d rather have an honest uncertainty than a false promise, anyway.”

She left it there, the conversation settling into something quieter, more contemplative, both of us turning over questions neither of us had confident answers for yet.

Whatever comes next — the barrier, the war’s actual outcome, whatever Ashford decides once the truth actually reaches them — I think Sophia’s going to be a genuinely important piece of how that unfolds.

Glad I decided to carry her home, instead of leaving her on that field.

I stood at the gravestone a while longer after she’d gone, tracing the newer inscription with familiar fingers.

Still building, Mom. Still trying to make something worth what you actually sacrificed for all of this. I hope, wherever you are, you think it’s worth it too.
