The other side of Reincarnation

”That’s far enough,” I said, stepping into the space between the toughs and the elves, pleasant as ever. The exact tone I’d learned unsettled people more than any raised voice could.

The lead tough—heavyset, overconfident in the way men get when they’ve never actually been made to answer for their own cruelty—looked me over and apparently decided a lone kid wasn’t worth reconsidering anything for.

”Not your business,” he said. ”These knife-ears don’t belong here. We’re just helping them remember that.”

Knife-ears. Charming.

”Funny,” I said. ”I was under the impression the guild charter for this district guaranteed fair trade to all registered visitors, regardless of race. Might be misremembering, though. Feel free to correct me, if you know the actual rule better than I do.”

He didn’t, clearly, given the way his confidence flickered.

”Doesn’t matter what the charter says,” he tried anyway. ”Nobody around here’s going to stop us.”

”I will,” I said. ”Consider that your correction.”

It didn’t take much after that—a show of aura, carefully controlled, just enough to make the point without anyone needing to actually get hurt. The toughs scattered within a minute, muttering threats that had lost all their earlier conviction, leaving the market square considerably quieter than we’d found it.

The silver-haired elf watched the whole exchange with an expression I couldn’t quite read—gratitude, certainly, but something more guarded underneath it, the wariness of someone who’d learned not to trust rescue too quickly.

”Thank you,” she said, finally, once the toughs were well out of sight. ”Though I should say—we were managing.”

Pride. There it is. Not ungrateful, just doesn’t love needing the help.

”I believe you,” I said. ”Figured it’d go faster with three of us than four of you against a dozen of them, though. Efficiency, not doubt.”

That got the faintest twitch of a smile out of her.

”Efficiency. I can respect that reasoning.”

”I’m Kai,” I said. ”This is Eris, and Ace.”

”Lyra,” she said. ”And these are my companions—though I’d rather introduce them properly once we’re somewhere less likely to attract a second round of trouble.”

We found a quiet corner of an inn willing to actually serve elves without incident—rarer in that district than it should have been, though the coin I offered upfront smoothed over whatever hesitation the innkeeper might otherwise have shown.

Lyra’s three companions turned out to be quieter, more reserved elves, content to let her speak for the group. She, meanwhile, studied the three of us with sharp, evaluating attention that reminded me, uncomfortably, of exactly the kind of look I’d learned to dread over the years.

Here it comes.

”You’re not entirely human,” she said, quiet, direct. ”Your aura reads strangely. Mixed, in a way I’ve never encountered before.”

Straight to it, then. No dancing around the question this time.

”You’re observant,” I said, carefully neutral.

”Elves are trained young to read aura signatures precisely,” she said. ”It’s part of how we identify threats before they become threats. Yours doesn’t match any category I’ve been taught.”

I felt the old instinct rise—deflect, deny, buy time the way I had with every stranger who’d asked some version of this question before. But something about her directness, her lack of fear underneath the observation, made me reconsider.

”I’ll tell you the truth eventually,” I said. ”Not today. Not because I don’t trust you—just because it’s a longer story than an afternoon in a rescued market square has earned, yet.”

She considered that, weighing it with the same careful attention she’d given everything else.

”Fair,” she said finally. ”I’ve learned not to demand more honesty than a stranger’s earned the right to give, either.”

Good to know. Thanks for actually flagging that instead of leaving me to guess.

I asked Lyra, once the tension had eased somewhat, what had actually brought her group to Roshan in the first place.

”We’re travelers,” she said. ”Displaced, more accurately. Our settlement, further west, has been dealing with—pressures. Land disputes, mostly, with a human lord who’s decided our forest is worth more as farmland than as our home. We came east looking for allies, or at least somewhere safer to regroup while we figure out our next move.”

Land disputes. Not the Church, then. Different flavor of injustice, same underlying shape—someone with power deciding someone else’s home isn’t worth respecting.

”That’s rough,” Eris said, quiet, genuine sympathy in it. ”I know a little about being pushed out of somewhere you didn’t choose to leave.”

Lyra glanced at her, something shifting in her expression—recognition, maybe, of a kindred kind of loss.

”I’d imagine you do,” she said, careful, not pushing for more than that.

”What are your plans, from here?” I asked.

”Uncertain,” Lyra admitted. ”We hadn’t planned on needing rescue from a market square, for one thing. Beyond that—find work, if this city allows it. Find allies, if any exist worth trusting. Figure out whether there’s a way back to our land worth pursuing, or whether we need to accept it’s simply gone.”

Same question Eris had, more or less, the day I found her. Same question I had, honestly, standing over my parents’ ruins.

”You’re welcome to travel with us a while,” I said, ”if that’s useful to you. Can’t promise we’ll solve your land dispute. Can promise you won’t be facing whatever comes next entirely alone, if you don’t want to be.”

Lyra studied me a long moment—the same weighing look Doran and Fenrik had both given me, once, in circumstances that felt like a lifetime ago now.

”That’s a generous offer, for someone I’ve known less than an afternoon,” she said.

”I collect people who’ve had a rough time of it,” I said. ”Turns out it’s a pattern with me, at this point.”

She actually laughed at that—short, surprised, genuine.

”Then I suppose I qualify.”

”Suppose you do.”

Her companions, once consulted, seemed relieved more than reluctant—clearly Lyra had been carrying more of the group’s weight than she’d let on, and the prospect of allies, even unfamiliar ones, eased something visibly in all three of them.

”We’ll travel with you,” Lyra said, finally, extending a hand in a gesture I recognized as formal among her people, judging by how deliberately she performed it. ”Provisionally. I reserve the right to reconsider, if your mysterious aura turns out to be attached to mysterious problems I’d rather not inherit.”

”Fair,” I said, shaking it. ”For what it’s worth, the problems are mostly mine. I try not to hand them to people who haven’t chosen to carry them.”

”We’ll see how well that holds up,” she said, dry, and I found myself liking her immediately—sharp, careful, unwilling to simply take comfort at face value, exactly the kind of person worth actually trusting once trust was properly earned.

Four of us now, more or less. Whatever shape this family keeps taking, it’s getting harder to call it small.
