The other side of Reincarnation

The question had been sitting with me for weeks, ever since Ignivar had first mentioned his own abandoned bloodline — a curiosity I’d kept setting aside in favor of more urgent things, until an unusually quiet training morning finally gave me the space to actually ask it.

”Are there other dragons like you,” I said, once we’d both caught our breath from another round I’d lost by a smaller margin than the week before. ”Ones who’ve stepped away from whatever the True Dragons still enforce. Or is it just you, out here, being unreasonably patient with someone who keeps losing to you?”

Ignivar considered the question with his usual unhurried thoughtfulness, settling onto the same weathered log he always favored after a session.

”Two, actually,” he said. ”Though neither would be much use to you, even if you found them.”

Two more. Huh. Wasn’t expecting a real answer, honestly.

”The Sea Dragon,” he continued, ”and the Fire Dragon. Ancient, even by dragon standards — old enough that most current records barely remember them as anything more than legend half the time.”

”What are they like?”

”Sleeping,” Ignivar said, simply. ”Mostly. The Sea Dragon rests somewhere in the deepest trenches of the southern ocean, surfacing perhaps once a century, if the old stories hold any truth. The Fire Dragon similarly, somewhere in old growth forest so remote most maps simply stop drawing detail past its borders.”

Sleeping. Not engaged. Not helping, not hindering — just gone, functionally, from anything actually happening in the world.

”Why don’t they get involved?” I asked. ”In any of this. The True Dragons, the rules, whatever conflict eventually happens between us.”

”Because they’ve decided none of it matters to them anymore,” Ignivar said. ”Understand — dragons who reach a certain age, a certain accumulated weight of years, sometimes simply... stop caring about the concerns of beings who measure their whole lives in decades rather than millennia. The Sea Dragon hasn’t surfaced fully in longer than any current record properly tracks. The Fire Dragon, similarly, hasn’t been confirmed active in comparable time.”

”So they’re just... out there. Asleep. While everything else happens around them.”

”Precisely,” Ignivar said. ”I’ve considered, more than once, whether that’s wisdom or simply exhaustion, dressed up as detachment. I’ve never been able to decide which.”

That’s a strange kind of existence. Powerful enough to matter, and choosing not to, simply because enough time has passed that matters seem to matter less.

”Would they help,” I asked, ”if it actually came down to it. If Vahlreth and Skorne became a fight I genuinely needed more support for.”

Ignivar was quiet a long moment, weighing the question with real consideration rather than simply dismissing it.

”I doubt it,” he said finally. ”Not out of malice. Simply out of the same detachment that’s kept them asleep this long already. Waking either of them would likely require something considerably more dramatic than a request for help — the kind of disturbance that threatens their own rest directly, rather than merely the wider world’s business.”

So they’re not allies. Not enemies either. Just... two more variables sitting out there, functionally irrelevant unless something forces them to actually wake up.

”Good to know, I guess,” I said. ”Feels like the kind of thing I should file away, even if it’s not immediately useful.”

”Most knowledge is like that,” Ignivar said. ”Not immediately useful. Still worth having, regardless.”

We sat together a while longer, the morning settling into the same comfortable quiet that had become familiar between us over the months of training — bruised, both of us, in the specific way that no longer felt like defeat so much as simply the cost of getting better.

”Can I ask you something else,” I said, eventually.

”You may.”

”Do you ever miss it? Being part of that world properly. The True Dragons, the old order, whatever status you gave up when you decided you’d had enough.”

Ignivar considered that question longer than any of the others, something distant entering his expression.

”Some days,” he admitted, honest in a way that felt rare from him. ”Belonging to something, even something I came to despise, was still belonging to something. This—” he gestured, vaguely, at Horizoncrest spread below us, at me, at the whole strange, growing shape of everything I’d built out of loss ”—is different. Better, I think, in the ways that actually matter. But different costs something too, even when it’s the right cost to pay.”

That’s more honest than I expected, from him. I think I understand that particular cost better than most people would.

”For what it’s worth,” I said, ”I’m glad you decided the different was worth it. Even on the days it costs you something.”

”So am I,” Ignivar said, simple and certain, and we let the morning settle into quiet again, two dragons’ worth of complicated history sitting comfortably alongside each other for a little while longer before the day’s demands inevitably called us both back to whatever came next.
