The other side of Reincarnation

The job that took us briefly outside Roshan’s walls again was simple enough on paper — a merchant house wanted protection for a shipment passing through a stretch of road recently plagued by opportunistic thieves. Silver-rank work, well-paying, the kind of contract that barely registered as effort anymore given how far we’d come since that first nervous escort with Tobias.

Funny, how fast ”barely registers as effort” becomes the new normal, once you’ve actually put in the work to get there.

The job itself passed without real incident — a single half-hearted attempt by a small, disorganized group of thieves, handled by Lyra’s arrows before they’d even fully committed to the attempt. We were back in Roshan within three days, the merchant thoroughly satisfied, our guild standing another small notch higher for it.

It was on the walk back into the city proper, weaving through the crowded market district, that I noticed Eris go suddenly, subtly rigid beside me.

　”Eris?”

”Nothing,” she said, too quickly, eyes fixed somewhere in the crowd ahead. ”Thought I saw someone. Probably nothing.”

Probably nothing rarely actually means nothing, in my experience.

　”Who?” I asked, careful, quiet.

She was silent a moment longer, scanning the crowd with an intensity that had nothing casual left in it.

”One of my former master’s men,” she said finally, voice tight. ”I might be wrong. It was fast. But I don’t think I am.”

”Assessment?” I asked Anti-Subconsciousness, silently, as we continued walking at a deliberately unhurried pace.

”Insufficient data to confirm or deny,” it replied. ”However, given her demonstrated skill at recognizing threats from her time in captivity, I would weight her identification as credible rather than dismiss it as paranoia.”

Fair. She’s earned the benefit of the doubt on exactly this kind of read, given everything she survived to get here.

”Let’s head back to the inn,” I said, out loud, keeping my tone light for the benefit of anyone who might be listening. ”Nothing urgent. Just want to talk through something.”

Lyra caught the shift in tone immediately, falling into step slightly closer, alert without looking obviously so. Ace, in his smaller form, drifted a step behind us, ears angled back toward the crowd we were leaving.

Back at the inn, door secured, Eris finally let the tension she’d been holding actually show.

”If it was him,” she said, pacing, ”if my former master’s actually looking for me, that means someone told him I’m here. Which means someone recognized me, somewhere, and either sold that information or passed it along some other way.”

Same shape as the informant who got Doran and Fenrik killed. Same shape, different target.

”We don’t know that for certain yet,” I said, careful not to let my own unease show more than necessary. ”Could’ve been a genuine coincidence. Could’ve been someone who simply resembled him.”

”Could have been,” Eris agreed, though she didn’t sound convinced. ”I’d rather be cautious than dismissive, though. I know what he’s capable of. I know what it would mean, if he’s actually looking.”

”Then we’re cautious,” Lyra said, firm. ”All of us. Starting now.”

Good. That’s the right instinct. Don’t dismiss it just because it’s inconvenient or unconfirmed.

”What would he actually do,” I asked, gentle, ”if he found you? Worst case. I want to understand exactly what we’re preparing against.”

Eris was quiet a long moment, old fear visibly resurfacing underneath her hard-won composure.

”He doesn’t like losing property,” she said, flat, the specific flatness she reserved for things too painful to say with any other tone. ”He’d want me back, first. Punishment, second, to make sure it never happens again. And if the Church really is paying for anomalies—”

　She didn’t finish the thought.

　Didn’t need to.

He’d sell her to them. If he found out what she actually is now.

Something cold and absolute settled into my chest at that — the same shape of feeling I’d carried into that clearing full of Church knights, the same shape I imagined I’d carry into whatever eventually happened with Selwyn herself.

”That’s not happening,” I said, quiet, certain. ”Whatever it takes. That’s simply not a version of the future I’m willing to let exist.”

Eris looked at me, something fragile and grateful crossing her face.

”I believe you,” she said. ”I just — I’ve believed things were safe before, and been wrong.”

”Fair,” I said. ”So we don’t just believe it. We prepare for it, actively, starting now. All of us.”

We spent the following days more carefully than we had in weeks — Lyra scouting the district discreetly, Ace using his sharpened senses to note any unfamiliar scent lingering too consistently near our usual routes, myself keeping Mirror Skin ready at a moment’s notice despite its once-daily limit, careful about exactly when to spend that single use.

Whoever it was, if it was anyone at all — they haven’t shown themselves again since that one glimpse. Doesn’t mean the threat’s gone. Might just mean they’re being patient, the same way the Church once was, all those years ago on that road with Doran and Fenrik.

”Patience, in a hunter, is rarely a comforting trait to notice in an enemy,” Anti-Subconsciousness observed, quiet, echoing an old lesson from a very different life.

No. It really isn’t.

Eris, for her part, threw herself into training with a fresh, focused intensity over those days — control drills, combat practice with Lyra, a determination to make sure that if her former master’s men did come for her again, she wouldn’t be caught anywhere near as unprepared as she’d been the day I first found her collapsed in that clearing.

”I’m not going back to being someone who needs rescuing,” she told me, one evening, sweat-soaked and breathing hard after a particularly grueling session. ”Not without a fight this time. Not ever again, if I can help it.”

I believe you. I really do.

”You won’t be facing it alone, either way,” I told her. ”Whatever comes. Same as I told Doran and Fenrik, once, on a rooftop full of stars.”

And I kept that promise, that time. Right up until I couldn’t anymore.

This time, I’m not letting ”couldn’t anymore” be the ending.

Whatever it takes.

I didn’t say that second thought out loud.

Some promises, I was learning, mattered more sealed quietly inside yourself than spoken where they might be tested before you were ready to actually keep them.
