The other side of Reincarnation

Sophia woke on the second day, and I want to be honest about how that actually went, because it wasn’t the calm, careful conversation I’d half-planned in my head the night before.

　”Where—”

She was upright before I’d finished registering she was conscious, one hand already reaching for a blade that wasn’t there, the sharp, immediate panic of a soldier waking somewhere unfamiliar and assuming the worst.

”You’re safe,” I said, quickly, hands raised, staying well back from the bed. ”Nobody here means you harm.”

She stared at me, memory clearly catching up in pieces — the fight, the interruption, the beam of dark light — and something in her expression hardened considerably once it finished assembling itself properly.

”You,” she said. ”I lost. I remember losing.”

”You did,” I agreed. ”Not to me, in the end, though. Something else happened after that.”

I told her everything, slowly, carefully, watching her expression shift through disbelief, horror, and something that looked, by the end, considerably like genuine grief.

”Cassmoor,” she said, quiet, once I’d finished. ”Lord Reventh Cassmoor. He sat on the war council. He was the one who pushed hardest for military action, the whole time the king was still weighing diplomacy.”

”An archdemon,” I confirmed. ”The entire time, apparently. Wearing his face, using his position, manipulating your own kingdom into a war that never needed to happen.”

She was quiet a long while, processing that, something in her posture slowly folding inward under the weight of it.

”The units I lost,” she said, finally. ”The ones sent before me. He was the one who ordered the first.”

”He confirmed it himself,” I said. ”Right before I killed him. Same order that got two people who helped me killed, six years back.”

”I’m sorry,” she said, and I believed her, the same steady honesty I’d noticed in her during our fight carrying through even now. ”For what it’s worth — I never knew. None of us did, I think. If demons have been embedded this deeply into our own command structure—”

”Then Ashford’s got a considerably bigger problem than one anomaly in the mountains,” I finished. ”Yeah. I’ve been sitting with that thought myself.”

She was quiet again, longer this time, something visibly warring behind her expression.

”What happens to me now,” she asked, finally. ”I lost. I’m your prisoner, I assume.”

”You’re not a prisoner,” I said. ”You’re a guest, for as long as you want to stay one. Once you’re ready, you’re free to leave, go back to Ashford, tell them whatever you think they need to hear.”

”Why,” she asked, genuinely bewildered. ”I fought you. I nearly killed you, at one point, if I’m honest about how close that exchange actually was.”

”Because you were honest with me,” I said, simple. ”Every question I asked, you answered truthfully, even when a lie might have served you better. That earns more from me than most people manage in years of knowing me.”

She studied me a long moment, something shifting behind her careful composure.

”You’re not what the reports described,” she said, finally. ”Not entirely, anyway.”

”Reports rarely get the whole picture,” I said. ”Yours came closer than most, though, from what I understand. Honest, at least, even when honest wasn’t easy.”

”There’s a girl,” she said, after another long silence. ”The one who healed us. I don’t understand why. She could have simply let both of us die, and instead—”

”I don’t understand it either,” I admitted. ”Anti-Subconsciousness has stayed quiet every time I’ve asked. Whatever her actual reasons were, they’re not ones I’ve been given yet.”

”A primordial demon,” Sophia said, testing the words like they still didn’t quite fit properly in her mouth. ”I always assumed those were myth. Old stories, meant to frighten new recruits.”

”Turns out a lot of old stories in this world have more truth to them than anyone expects,” I said. ”Learned that lesson myself, more than once.”

She sat with everything a long while, the silence between us settling into something less hostile than it had started, though not yet fully comfortable either.

”I’d like to stay,” she said, finally. ”Briefly. If that offer’s genuine. I have — considerable questions of my own, about what my own institution actually is, underneath everything I thought I understood about it.”

”Take whatever time you need,” I said. ”Nobody here’s going to rush you toward a decision you’re not ready to make.”

She nodded, something settling in her posture that hadn’t been there since she’d woken — not trust, not yet, but the beginning, maybe, of something that could eventually become it.

One enemy, possibly turning into something else entirely. One demon-orchestrated war, finally understood a little better. One very long day, finally starting to properly settle.

Let’s see what tomorrow actually brings.
