The other side of Reincarnation

The dwarves arrived first, Senna leading them through the barrier’s edge with the quiet confidence of someone who’d done this exact thing before, back when she herself had still been a stranger wandering these woods without a name of her own.

I remember the day she was found, actually. Different circumstances. Same fear on her face, back then, that these dwarves are wearing now.

Borga’s people entered the clearing just past the training grounds at precisely the wrong — or, depending on how you looked at it, precisely the right — moment.

　I was on the ground.

Ignivar stood over me, entirely unbothered, having just ended our morning session with the same unhurried efficiency he applied to everything.

”Again,” I said, from the dirt, more resigned than annoyed at this point.

”Again,” he agreed, offering a hand up.

The dwarves stopped dead at the edge of the clearing, staring.

I want to be honest about how that looked, from their perspective — the supposed ruler of this territory, flat on his back in the dirt, dragged upright by someone who’d just spent the last hour demonstrating exactly how outmatched he still was.

Borga’s expression shifted through several stages of confusion in quick succession.

”That’s — that’s the ruler?” she said, to Senna, disbelieving.

”That’s Lord Kai,” Senna confirmed, entirely straight-faced despite what they’d just witnessed.

”He’s losing,” Borga said, flat.

”He usually is, against Ignivar,” Senna said. ”Doesn’t mean what you’re probably assuming it means.”

Fair assessment, honestly. I’d probably be confused too, watching this for the first time.

I brushed the dirt off myself and approached properly, doing my best to project something resembling dignity despite the circumstances.

”Sorry about that,” I said, to Borga and the assembled dwarves. ”Not usually how I greet new arrivals. Ignivar here is considerably stronger than me, and considerably more patient about proving it repeatedly.”

”You’re not — ” Borga started, then stopped, clearly recalibrating whatever assumption she’d walked in with.

”You’re not going to demand anything of us? Labor, loyalty, some price for the land?”

There it is. Same fear every displaced person carries into a stranger’s territory.

”You’re welcome to stay,” I said, simple. ”Whatever you’re willing to contribute freely, I’ll take gladly. Nothing demanded beyond that.”

Borga studied me a long moment, the same searching weight she’d apparently given Senna earlier, before something in her posture finally, genuinely eased.

”Dwarves know craft,” she said, testing the offer’s actual shape. ”Forging, mining, construction work that holds up considerably better than most human efforts. If that’s useful to you—”

”Extremely useful,” I said, honestly. ”We lost our own construction skill a while back. Been leaning entirely on elven techniques since.”

Something like real hope crossed her weathered face for the first time since Senna had found them.

The humans arrived not long after, Senna having timed their approach with the same careful patience, and found a scene only slightly less confusing — Ignivar and I mid-conversation about my footwork, both of us bruised in roughly matching places.

Their reaction mirrored the dwarves’ almost exactly — disbelief, cautious hope, the slow unclenching of people who’d expected another lord and found, instead, someone genuinely unwilling to extract more than was freely given.

”We don’t have much to offer,” the father who’d spoken to Senna earlier admitted, quiet, his sleeping child still against his shoulder. ”Farmers, mostly. Simple trades.”

”Farmers are exactly what this domain needs,” I told him. ”More than you’d expect, given how much of it is currently just forest and monsters I haven’t gotten around to properly cataloguing.”

That got a small, surprised laugh out of him — the first sound of genuine relief I’d heard from any of them since they’d arrived.

Ignivar, watching all of this unfold with the same patient attention he brought to our training, spoke quietly once the new arrivals had been shown toward temporary lodging.

”You’re building something unusual,” he observed. ”Most rulers extract. You simply... offer, and let people decide what they owe in return.”

”Seems to work better,” I said. ”People give more, freely, than you’d ever manage to properly extract from them by force.”

”A useful lesson,” Ignivar said, something thoughtful in his tone. ”One even True Dragons might benefit from learning, if they were capable of learning anything past their own certainty.”

That’s the closest thing to genuine warmth I’ve heard from him yet, about anything.

”Speaking of lessons,” I said, testing my still-aching shoulder, ”are we doing another round today, or have you finally taken pity on me?”

”Another round,” Ignivar confirmed, entirely unmoved. ”Pity teaches nothing useful.”

Of course it doesn’t. Should’ve known better than to ask.

I followed him back toward the training grounds, already bracing for the next fall, while behind us, Horizoncrest quietly absorbed two more displaced peoples into whatever it was steadily becoming —

A home built, over and over, out of exactly the kind of loss the wider world seemed determined to keep manufacturing.
