The other side of Reincarnation

”Kai.”

I looked up from the training ground, mid-session with Ignivar, at the unusual sharpness in Anti-Subconsciousness’s voice.

That’s not a normal tone. Something’s wrong.

”What is it,” I said, already lowering my blade.

”Absolute Sanctuary has been breached. A localized structural failure, briefly, at the domain’s eastern edge. Something entered during the window.”

Breached. Somebody actually breached it.

”Who,” I said.

”They are from the Church. Holy Knights.”

Something in me went very still.

”Did you just say Holy Knight,” I said, quiet, flat, every trace of the calm I usually carried draining out of my expression in a single instant. My own voice sounded distant to me, like it belonged to someone else entirely.

”Where.”

Anti-Subconsciousness told me the exact location without hesitation, apparently reading something in my tone that told it further questions weren’t welcome.

Eris found me a moment later, her own expression tight with the same alertness I recognized instantly.

”I felt it too,” she said. ”Someone’s inside the barrier. Kai—”

She caught my arm, firm, reading whatever had settled over my face with unnerving accuracy.

”Don’t do anything stupid.”

”No promises,” I said, already turning.

”Ignivar,” she said, sharp, not to me but past me, already anticipating exactly what I intended to do. ”Go with him. Just in case.”

”Agreed,” Ignivar said, unhurried as ever, already falling into step.

By the time either of them turned to actually look for me, I was already gone.

Ace at my side, moving faster than either of them could follow.

The four knights felt me before they saw me — a presence, sudden and immense, that none of their training had properly prepared them to locate.

They shifted into a defensive formation, weapons half-raised, scanning a treeline that gave them absolutely nothing useful to look at.

I didn’t give them time to find me properly.

I was simply there, in the exact center of their formation, before a single one of them had registered movement.

”Move,” I said, blade already drawn, mana bleeding faint and cold along its edge, ”and you die.”

All four went rigid, weapons frozen mid-motion, the specific paralysis of people who understood, instantly and completely, that whatever they’d trained for had nothing to do with what they were currently facing.

”One of them is missing,” Anti-Subconsciousness noted, flat, cutting through the tension.

Right. Five signatures. Four in front of me.

”Ace,” I said, not looking away from the four knights. ”Find her.”

He was gone before I finished the sentence.

”What business do you have here,” I said, voice still carrying none of its usual warmth.

The knight nearest me — young, clearly the most junior of the four, and apparently the most convinced his training entitled him to some measure of pride even in his current position — straightened slightly.

”What makes you think we owe you an ans—”

　My blade was already moving.

I don’t remember deciding to swing it. I only remember the motion, clean and absolute, aimed precisely at the exact height his arrogance had positioned his throat.

　It never landed.

Ignivar’s hand closed around the blade’s flat, stopping it entirely, close enough to the knight’s skin that a thin line of blood welled anyway from the sheer proximity.

”I believe Eris told you not to do anything stupid,” Ignivar said, mild, unbothered by the blade still resting against his own palm.

The four knights, already frozen, went several shades paler at the sight of him — recognition, sudden and total, the specific horror of people realizing exactly whose name belonged to the face they were looking at.

”You,” the eldest of them — Seraphiel, though I didn’t know her name yet in that moment — managed, voice tight. ”You’re—”

”I am,” Ignivar said, simply, not bothering to elaborate further.

He turned to me, entirely unhurried despite having just stopped me from killing someone.

”Go find the other one. I’ll handle the questions here.”

He’s right. I’m not winning an argument with him right now, at my current level. Not close.

I sheathed my blade, the cold, distant feeling still sitting heavy in my chest, and left without another word — partly trusting his judgment, partly, if I’m honest, simply unwilling to test whether he’d stop me a second time.

I found Vance exactly where I expected — at the edge of the inner clearing, instruments arranged with the same meticulous care she brought to everything, studying the dimensional barrier’s shimmer with open, undisguised fascination.

I didn’t draw my blade this time.

Something about her presence read entirely differently than the four knights had — no Church training in the shape of her energy, no hostile intent buried anywhere in it.

　Just curiosity, sharp and genuine.

She’s not one of them. Not really. Whatever she’s actually here for, it isn’t the Church’s business.

”You must be the anomaly,” she said, turning, entirely unsurprised by my arrival. ”Ophelia Vance. I’d apologize for the intrusion, but I suspect you’d rather hear the truth than a courtesy.”

”Start with why you split off from your own team,” I said, calmer now, the earlier coldness finally beginning to thaw.

”Because this is the single greatest challenge my field has offered me in forty years,” she said, gesturing at the barrier with genuine reverence. ”Dimensional magic, layered beneath your own construction, older, denser than anything I’ve encountered. I couldn’t walk past it.”

We spoke a while longer — her theories, her forty years of largely untested expertise, my own careful, guarded questions about what she actually understood of the barrier’s nature.

She answered everything honestly, without the practiced evasion I’d expect from someone working an angle.

I believe her.

Actually believe her, not just tolerate her.

”We should head back,” I said, eventually. ”Before Ignivar decides I’ve taken too long.”

She fell into step beside me without argument, and it was only once we’d rejoined the others — Ignivar standing calm and immovable over four still-shaken knights — that something entirely unexpected happened.

　Vance stopped dead.

She stared at Ignivar with open, delighted recognition.

”You,” she said. ”I don’t believe it. It’s actually you.”

Ignivar’s expression shifted into something almost fond.

”Ophelia. It’s been some time.”

...What?

”You two know each other?” I asked, looking between them, thoroughly confused.

”He was my teacher,” Vance said, still grinning. ”Decades ago, before I gave up combat training for something considerably more academic. I’d wondered, more than once, whatever became of him.”

Of course.

Of course they know each other.

Why would anything about today be simple.

Ignivar relayed what the four knights had told him — a straightforward account of the Church’s investigation, the lost units, the growing pressure back in Ashford to understand what actually controlled this territory.

”And you,” I asked Vance, once that account had settled. ”Are you going back with them?”

”No,” she said, without hesitation. ”There’s considerably more to learn here than whatever the Church actually wants from this territory. I’d rather stay, if you’ll allow it.”

”She could prove genuinely useful,” Anti-Subconsciousness offered, quiet, only to me. ”Her expertise may assist in properly understanding sections of your domain you have not yet reached.”

Fair point. And Ignivar clearly trusts her, which counts for something.

”You can stay,” I said.

We released the four knights at the barrier’s edge shortly after, watching them depart with the specific, wary relief of people who’d expected considerably worse than they’d actually received.

Ace watched them go, silent and alert, until the last trace of their presence faded from his senses entirely.

They know how to breach the barrier now.

Whatever Vance’s working actually did, it’s not a secret anymore.

”They will return,” Anti-Subconsciousness said, flat, certain. ”Now that entry has been demonstrated possible, the Church has no reason to believe it cannot be repeated.”

Yeah. I figured as much myself.

I stood at the barrier’s edge a long while, the cold, distant feeling from earlier finally settling into something more familiar — quiet resolve, rather than the flat, dangerous emptiness that had carried me through the last hour.

They’ll be back. Next time, better prepared, probably.

I should be too.

I turned back toward Horizoncrest, Vance and Ignivar falling into step beside me, already trading quiet, familiar conversation about old times neither of them had expected to revisit quite like this.

Today was a warning.

I intend to actually listen to it.
