The other side of Reincarnation

Sophia spent her first proper days at Horizoncrest mostly watching, the careful, evaluating attention of someone gathering information rather than simply resting.

”You have dwarves here,” she observed, on the second morning, watching Borga’s people move through their forge work with practiced efficiency. ”And elves. Humans, clearly displaced from somewhere, given how they’ve settled in. This isn’t a fortress. It’s a—”

”A town,” I said. ”A home, for people who didn’t have anywhere else safe to be.”

She’s trying to reconcile this with whatever the Church actually told her to expect. Good. Let her.

”The reports described a monster’s territory,” she said, quiet. ”A hoard, perhaps. Something worth conquering.”

”The reports were wrong,” I said, simple. ”Or written by people who needed them to be wrong, for their own reasons.”

She spent time with Eris that same week, cautious at first, though something in the exchange seemed to ease considerably faster than I’d expected.

”You’re blind,” Sophia observed, careful, watching Eris move through the training grounds with total, unhesitating confidence.

”I am,” Eris confirmed, not breaking stride. ”Doesn’t slow me down much, these days.”

　”How—”

”Anti-mana,” Eris said. ”I see through it now, instead of through my eyes. Different, not worse.”

I watched Sophia’s expression shift at that — genuine curiosity replacing whatever wariness had colored her earlier assessment.

　”That’s remarkable,” she said, honest.

”It is,” Eris agreed, entirely without false modesty. ”Cost me a lot to learn it, though. Most good things do.”

Elaine, for her part, treated Sophia with the same careful, professional courtesy she extended to everyone new — neither warm nor cold, simply patient, giving her room to reach her own conclusions rather than pushing toward any particular outcome.

”You lead the defense here,” Sophia said, during one of their own conversations, studying Elaine’s training routines with clear professional interest.

”I do,” Elaine said. ”Different discipline than yours, probably. We train to protect, not to conquer.”

”Is there truly a difference,” Sophia asked, ”in the actual mechanics of combat?”

”No,” Elaine admitted. ”The difference is in what you’re willing to do once the fighting’s over. We don’t extract more than what’s freely given, once a threat’s actually handled. I’d imagine that’s not always true, on your side.”

Sophia didn’t argue that point, which told me more than any actual response could have.

It was Aeron, eventually, who had the conversation that seemed to actually shift something fundamental in her.

”You wonder,” he said, finding her alone near the town’s edge one evening, ”why beings like myself — long-lived, capable of considerable power — choose to live under someone your own institution calls an anomaly.”

　”I do,” she admitted.

”Because he asked what we needed, rather than telling us what we owed him,” Aeron said, simple. ”Because when my people had nowhere else safe to go, he offered a home, not a transaction. I’ve lived considerably longer than most beings you’ll ever meet, Commander Aurelain. I’ve seen a great many kingdoms, a great many rulers. Few have ever offered anything approaching what this one built, freely, out of nothing but his own losses and his own stubborn refusal to let anyone else suffer the same losses without help.”

Didn’t expect Aeron to make my case for me quite that eloquently. Appreciated, though.

Sophia sat with that conversation a long while, I gathered later, turning it over against everything she’d been taught to believe about the institution she’d served her entire adult life.

”I don’t know what to do with all of this,” she told me, that same evening, quiet, genuinely uncertain in a way that felt considerably more vulnerable than the composed commander I’d first met on that battlefield. ”Everything I believed about my own Church — about the threat you supposedly represented — none of it matches what I’ve actually seen here.”

”Take your time,” I said. ”Nobody’s rushing you toward a conclusion.”

”I know,” she said. ”That’s — actually part of what’s unsettling me. Nobody here has pressured me toward anything at all. My own institution rarely offers that same patience.”

That’s the whole point, honestly. Trust doesn’t grow from pressure. Never has, in my experience.

She looked out over Horizoncrest’s evening lights, the same view I’d once shared with Eris on a similarly quiet night, years and a lifetime of building ago.

”I think,” she said, slowly, ”I need to see my own institution clearly again, before I can properly decide what any of this actually means for me.”

”That’s fair,” I said. ”Whenever you’re ready for that, I won’t stop you.”
