The other side of Reincarnation

The stranger arrived at Horizoncrest’s border without any of the caution Church knights usually showed — walking directly toward the barrier’s edge, waiting there with the patient stillness of someone who fully expected to be noticed rather than sneaking past unseen.

”Unusual,” Anti-Subconsciousness noted. ”The individual’s aura reads as dragon-adjacent, though not matching either Vahlreth or Skorne’s known signatures.”

Dragon-adjacent. Not one of the two I actually want. Still worth taking seriously.

I went out to meet him myself, Ace at my side, curiosity outweighing caution for once.

He was tall, dark-haired, dressed plainly enough that nothing about his appearance screamed dragon at first glance — except for his eyes, which held the same faintly reptilian quality I recognized, distantly, from memories of my own mother’s human form.

”You’re the one they’re calling the anomaly,” he said, without preamble. ”Word travels, even among dragons who’ve mostly stopped listening to the rest of the world’s business.”

”Depends who’s asking,” I said, careful, unhurried.

”Ignivar,” he said. ”Formerly of a bloodline that stopped mattering to me the day I watched what True Dragons actually do to anyone who doesn’t fit their idea of proper order.”

Huh. That’s a specific kind of grievance. Worth hearing more about.

”I wanted to see for myself,” he continued, ”whether you’re actually worth the rumors, or just another dangerous thing best avoided.”

”And how do you plan on seeing that?”

His smile was calm, unhurried, nothing showy in it at all.

　”The obvious way.”

I understood the gap between us within the first exchange.

It wasn’t close. I want to be honest about that, because it would be easy to tell this story as an even contest, and it wasn’t — not really. Ignivar’s aura, once he actually let it show, sat somewhere I hadn’t encountered before, older and deeper than anything I’d faced since the ridgeback, except this was a ridgeback that could have ended me in a single unhurried motion if it had actually wanted to.

This isn’t a fair fight. This isn’t even close to a fair fight.

He didn’t press that advantage, though.

That was the strange part — every opening he could have taken cleanly, he simply didn’t, his strikes landing with just enough force to test me, never enough to end things outright.

”He is deliberately restraining his output,” Anti-Subconsciousness observed, flat as ever. ”By a significant margin.”

I noticed. Thanks for confirming I’m not imagining it.

We traded blows for a long stretch — not because I was actually winning ground, but because he was letting the exchange continue, patient in a way that felt less like combat and more like a lesson being delivered through the shape of a fight rather than words.

I caught a genuine opening once, late in the exchange, my control finding a gap his casual pace had left uncovered — and even then, he simply let the strike land, taking the shallow cut across his forearm without any real reaction beyond a small, approving nod.

”Good,” he said. ”You noticed that. Most wouldn’t, this early in their own growth.”

He’s testing specific things. Not just whether I can fight. Whether I notice what I’m actually capable of noticing.

I pressed forward once more, and this time he ended it — a single, unhurried motion that swept my blade wide and left me on the ground before I’d fully registered the movement had happened at all.

”That’s enough for today,” he said, offering a hand to help me up. ”You held your own considerably better than most would, against a gap this size. That matters more than the outcome.”

”You went easy on me,” I said, taking his hand, still catching my breath.

”Considerably,” he agreed, without any pretense of denying it. ”If I’d fought you at my actual capacity, this would have ended in the first exchange, and I’d have learned nothing useful about what you’re actually capable of. Restraint teaches me more than domination ever would.”

Fair. Genuinely fair, and more thoughtful than I expected from someone who arrived wanting a fight.

”So,” I said. ”Was that a test, or were you actually deciding whether to kill me?”

”Bit of both, if I’m honest,” he said, examining the shallow cut on his own arm with mild interest. ”I needed to know if you were worth the risk of approaching. You are. Not yet strong enough to matter against Vahlreth or Skorne — I’d be lying if I said otherwise — but worth the investment of time regardless.”

”You know them,” I said. Not quite a question.

”I’ve watched them enforce rules on the rest of us that they’ll never have to answer to themselves,” he said, something old and controlled beneath the words, nothing like Kellan’s earlier bitterness might have sounded — quieter, more settled, the grievance of decades rather than a fresh wound.

”I’ve been looking for someone actually capable of ending that, eventually. You might be exactly that person, given enough time and the right guidance.”

”I’m not ready for them,” I said, honest. ”Not close.”

”No,” Ignivar agreed. ”But you could be. If you’re willing to actually train under someone who can show you what real mastery of anti-mana looks like, rather than continuing to improvise alone.”

I studied him a long moment — calm, patient, genuinely without malice despite the gap in power he’d just demonstrated so effortlessly.

”You’re offering to train me,” I said. ”Personally.”

”I am,” he said. ”Consider it an investment. In you, and in whatever eventually happens to Vahlreth and Skorne, once you’re ready for that conversation properly.”

”Welcome to Horizoncrest,” I said, finally, something settling into place that felt considerably more significant than a single fight had any right to produce.

”We’ll get that cut looked at, and then, I think, you’ve got some teaching to do.”

　He smiled, small and satisfied.

　”I look forward to it.”
