The other side of Reincarnation

Doran’s plan was simple, which was usually how his best plans were: if something patient was following us, the way to catch it wasn’t to run faster.

It was to stop moving entirely, somewhere that looked like an opportunity.

We picked a clearing that offered a clean sightline in every direction, made camp like we suspected nothing, and waited.

　I don’t love being bait.

I love not knowing even less.

Guess that settles which discomfort wins tonight.

He came just past midnight――quiet, skilled, the kind of quiet that spoke to real training rather than simple caution.

　Fenrik caught him first.

A blur of motion in the dark ended with the scout pinned hard against a tree trunk, blade at his throat before he’d finished registering he’d been made.

”Evening,” I said, stepping into view, deliberately unhurried. ”You’ve been very dedicated. Weeks of careful tracking, two campfires kept just out of sight. I’d almost call it impressive, if it weren’t currently pointed at us.”

　The scout said nothing.

　Young.

Professionally calm despite the blade at his throat.

He wore plain dark clothes with no obvious markings――nothing that told me who’d sent him.

Which felt, itself, like a deliberate choice.

”Who sent you,” Doran said.

　Not a question.

　A demand.

Flat and cold, in a register I hadn’t heard from him before.

　Still nothing.

The scout’s eyes flicked between the three of us, calculating, weighing something.

　Not scared enough.

That’s the part that actually worries me.

　Scared people talk.

　This one’s not scared.

This one’s trained for exactly this moment.

”We can do this the easy way,” I said, crouching to his eye level, my tone still perfectly pleasant――which I’d learned by now unsettled people more than any threat could. ”Or the hard way. I’d genuinely prefer the easy way. Less mess for everyone.”

”You won’t get anything from me,” the scout said, finally, voice steady. ”Doesn’t matter what you do. I’ve already done what I needed to do.”

　That’s not defiance.

　That’s certainty.

　He already sent word.

Whatever he found, it’s already on its way to whoever’s waiting for it.

”What did you find,” I said, quieter now, the pleasantness dropping just slightly at the edges. ”What exactly did you already send?”

He almost smiled at that――the specific, unsettling calm of someone who genuinely believed he’d already won, regardless of what happened to him personally in the next few minutes.

”Confirmation,” he said. ”That’s all I needed. The temple doesn’t ask for more than confirmation before it acts.”

　Temple.

　Not ”kingdom.”

　Not ”lord.”

　Temple.

”Confirmation of what,” Doran pressed, blade pressing harder against the scout’s throat.

”Of what shouldn’t exist,” the scout said.

There was something almost reverent in how he said it, which was somehow worse than if he’d said it with hatred instead.

”That’s not my place to explain further. My part’s already done.”

He didn’t say anything else useful after that――not under questioning, not under threat, not even when Fenrik’s patience visibly frayed toward something neither of us had seen from him before.

Eventually Doran called it, voice tight, and we let the scout go.

We watched him disappear back into the dark with the same unhurried calm he’d arrived with.

”We should’ve――” Fenrik started, angry in a way I understood completely.

”We should’ve what,” Doran said, tired. ”Killed a kid doing a job, for information he’d already made sure didn’t matter whether he gave it up or not? Wouldn’t have changed anything. Just would’ve been one more thing to carry.”

　He’s right.

Doesn’t make it feel any better.

”Temple,” I said, once the scout was long gone, turning the word over. ”Not a bandit crew. Not a rival mage. An actual religious order.”

”Something with resources,” Doran added. ”Something patient enough to send scouts for weeks before acting. Something that thinks it already knows enough about you to move.”

Confirmation of what shouldn’t exist.

He wasn’t talking about a person.

He was talking about a category.

Something I apparently fit into, whether I’ve ever met a single one of these people or not.

I sat with that, cold settling somewhere under my ribs that had nothing to do with the night air.

　They already sent word.

Whatever’s coming next, it’s already moving.

We’re not ahead of this anymore.

I don’t think we ever actually were.
