The Dramatic Crown Princess Wants to Poison Me!

Chapter 332: Chapter 332: Probing

Jinxuan was taken aback, his lips trembling: ”Didn’t you say... it wouldn’t come to me?”

Thinking of that piercing voice last night, the terrifying shadow of a ghost, and the phenomena beyond his expectation, he was shivering with horror.

Huangfu Jingchen gave him a sidelong glance and said, ”What I mentioned was just a possibility. How would I know what Bai Yi was thinking since I’m not him? However, if someone’s vengeful spirit is seeking revenge and you accidentally bump into it, it becomes your cause and effect. You discovered his secret, and no one is happy to have their secrets known by others. Isn’t it quite normal for you to have bad luck?”

Jinxuan’s eyes twinkled, looking innocent and bewildered: ”Although I don’t know what’s wrong, I feel what you said makes a lot of sense!” He eagerly inquired, ”Then what should I do?”

Huangfu Jingchen said, ”How should I know what to do?”

Jinxuan’s spirit was sparked: ”Brother Zheng, think about it. Didn’t I just unintentionally get involved in someone else’s karma? Since Bai Yi died with grievances, if I help him expose his injustice to the world, don’t you think that would resolve this karma? By assisting him, it wouldn’t make sense for him to still bring me bad luck, and perhaps out of gratitude, he might even reward me. Do you think that’s possible?”

Huangfu Jingchen smiled, took a sip of tea, and said, ”There’s quite a good chance of that!”

”I knew this plan would work!” Jinxuan sighed, looking dejected, ”Ah, have I hit a streak of bad luck lately? How did I even come across a vengeful spirit?”

Huangfu Jingchen said leisurely, ”It’s not necessarily so. On the contrary, as an imperial envoy with imperial orders, wouldn’t a vengeful spirit seeking to redress its grievances need to find you? It didn’t come to you directly but let you catch wind of it—consider yourself lucky!”

Jinxuan angrily cursed, ”That damn scoundrel. It’s bad enough he harmed others, and now he wants to harm me too. Engaging in corruption and treating human life with neglect is bad enough, and now he’s implicating others! I’m going to write a letter right now!”

Huangfu Jingchen said, ”Is that all then? If nothing else, I’m going to leave!”

Jinxuan hurriedly grinned, ”Brother Zheng, why are you in such a hurry? We’re practically family, and it’s been such a long time since we’ve seen each other. Stay awhile and let’s catch up!”

Huangfu Jingchen glanced at him, ”You’d better resolve your issues first.”

Jinxuan replied speechlessly, ”Brother Zheng, must you hit the nail on the head? Remembering last night’s event still makes my legs shake!”

Huangfu Jingchen laughed and said, ”Isn’t that more reason to act quickly? Or are you going to wait until it really finds you?”

Jinxuan shook his head like a rattle-drum and immediately shouted, ”Servant, pen and ink!”

Wei Jun answered as he entered, and Jinxuan instructed, ”Quick, prepare the paper and grind the ink. I... no, the Lord Imperial Envoy needs to write a letter!” He was so engrossed that he didn’t even notice Huangfu Jingchen had left.

As he walked out, Huangfu Jingchen gave a slight smile and shook his head. He didn’t know Jinxuan well, but during his month in the Capital City, he’d heard plenty of rumors—always stirring up trouble, arrogant and tyrannical, abusing his power, and being uneducated.

He was curious about how such a person could become an imperial envoy.

But it seems that Jinxuan is indeed a smart person.

The reason he invited me today was not to catch up or to maintain a relationship; it was all just a test. He acted as if he was very scared, trembling in his limbs, but deep down in his eyes, there was a calmness.

His mother had said that within the imperial family in the Capital City, there wasn’t a single fool.

Now it seems, that’s indeed true!

Luckily, he didn’t have to go to the Capital City and get involved with those people.

Once Huangfu Jingchen was well out of sight, the fear and trembling on Jinxuan’s face were nowhere to be seen.

The pen in his hand spun like a windmill, and his manner was incredibly relaxed and leisurely.

As Wei Jun ground the ink, he cast sidelong glances at Jinxuan, whispering, ”Second Young Master, should we still write that letter?”

Jinxuan gave him a sideways glance, ”Why wouldn’t we write it? If the scoundrel confessed himself, and evidence falls into our lap and we don’t write it, who’s the fool—you or me?”

”It doesn’t really count as evidence, at best, just a secret...” Wei Jun mumbled softly.

Jinxuan, with sharp ears, tossed his pen at him, ”You think that’s not evidence? With a little investigation, it’ll be solid evidence. Who would just hand over evidence to you on a silver platter?”

Wei Jun, grinning broadly, didn’t dodge, accepted the pen with both hands, and passed it back, asking, ”Second Young Master, do you think the Young Master knew you were testing him?”

Jinxuan coolly replied, ”What do you think?”

Wei Jun scratched his head, ”Could it be that there really are ghosts in this world?”

The Second Young Master invited the Young Master here because he has been in Wangshan Town for a long time and would surely know if there were any experts here.

But judging from the Second Young Master’s expression, it seemed the Young Master didn’t reveal anything!

Jinxuan intoned mysteriously, ”Of course, there are ghosts, but fortunately, I’ve got good fortune! Enough with this idle chatter, hurry and prepare the ink!”

The Lord Imperial Envoy being here meant that Yu Shikui, as unwilling as he might be, had to come and report.

At that time, it was almost lunchtime. The town wasn’t like the county; especially since the epidemic, everyone had to rely on themselves, and resources were scarce. Wang Bolao still managed to kill a chicken, buy some meat, and make a homely lunch.

Jinxuan had already dispatched Wei Jun back to the Capital City to deliver a letter, keeping Meng Han by his side. At that moment, Jinxuan sniffed the aroma of chicken soup wafting from the kitchen, twitched his nose, and said to Meng Han, ”Don’t you feel like the chicken here smells richer?”

Meng Han: ”...”

What could he say?

The Second Young Master, in the Capital City, was used to feasting on meats every day, naturally becoming jaded by it.

But taking on the role of an imperial envoy, impatient with the slow ceremonial procession, he missed many accommodations along the way. Whenever they did find lodging, the food was nothing compared to the refined meals of the Capital City.

He hadn’t eaten well since the day before yesterday.

Now, upon smelling such enticing chicken soup, how could he not find it aromatic?

Still, he responded, ”Perhaps the meat here is indeed tastier.”

Jinxuan said, ”You know, we’re feasting here, while Young Master Zheng has rough tea and simple meals at the inn. It feels a bit unfair. How about this, go invite him over for lunch!”

Meng Han’s mouth twitched: ”Second Young Master, if I leave, what about your safety? You only have Wei Jun and me with you. With Wei Jun gone back to the Capital, I can’t leave your side now. Besides, you invited him this morning, and if you invite him again now, will he come?”

”Then let’s do it this way—we’ll go to the inn ourselves and have Wang Bolao send the food over once it’s ready.”

As soon as Jinxuan decided, he immediately sprang into action.

Meng Han could only relay the message to Wang Bolao and then hurried to catch up.

The actions of the Second Young Master were always unpredictable; what choice did he have? Naturally, he could only follow along.

Yu Shikui arrived at the Town Mayor’s Mansion, only to find no one there.
