Lingering Doting Marriage: Big Boss, Little Sweet Heart

Chapter 2773: Chapter 2782: So Was It You

Nicole Oliver was overjoyed when she heard he agreed to help, but before her joy completely took over, she noticed August Oliver’s cold expression. As she pondered over August’s words, her heart tightened abruptly.

Could he really mean what she understood?

Nicole cautiously forced a smile and tentatively asked, ”August, wouldn’t this be too difficult for you? Actually, this whole thing is a misunderstanding. It’s all my fault for not maintaining a good relationship with my colleagues at the same company. Lena has been caught in bad news lately, hasn’t she? She heard from somewhere that I set her up, so she deliberately set up a scheme against me...”

Nicole bit her lip, looking troubled, ”I don’t want this to escalate and cause the company losses. That’s why I came to you, hoping you might have a solution. If it’s too much to ask, forget it, I’ll find a way to handle it myself.”

August listened quietly until she was finished. The waiter brought the steak they ordered. August lifted the glass of lemon water in his hand, shook it slightly, then set it down, looking up at her face. His dark eyes were like a deep well, reflecting her image, ”So, was the journalist following Lena your person?”

Nicole felt as if her throat was being choked, and she was unable to deny it immediately, ”I...”

Her eyes evaded, and she explained awkwardly, ”The entertainment industry is highly competitive. You’ve been in this circle before, so you know. Sometimes we’re not in control.”

Feeling she had found her composure, she dared to look into August’s eyes again, ”That journalist is my contact. But it’s not what you think. I didn’t know beforehand he was following Lena; he usually liaises with my manager. I guess my manager asked him to do it. After all, there’s work resource competition between Lena and me, and both managers have been at odds for a long time. She had previously set me up, causing me to lose a crucial international work opportunity. My manager has always wanted to vent for me.”

She grew more steady as she spoke, resting her chin on her hands with a charming smile, ”Of course, saying I had no idea at all would be too fake.”

”Once the news broke about her, my manager told me about the journalist. I felt quite relieved.”

”Oh?” August remained highly indifferent, seemingly unmoved by her flawless explanation. He turned his gaze away, picked up the knife and fork to cut the steak on his plate. The leather wristband on his wrist stood out distinctly, contrasting sharply with his fair skin and forming a striking contrast with the sleeve of his suit, ”Regardless, Lena is an artist under the company. I don’t care about any personal grievances between you. The actions of you and your manager have violated company policies and led to losses.”

”August, I’m sorry. If I had known earlier that my manager was secretly hiring journalists to follow her, I would have stopped it. I genuinely didn’t know beforehand and feel really guilty for causing you so much trouble.” Nicole had already decided to confess that she had framed Lena when he questioned her, hoping to leverage her personal connection with August to trivialize the matter.

She lowered her head, carrying an extra charm of delicate sadness.

”Perhaps, you shouldn’t worry about it anymore. I’ll see if I can find another way to resolve it myself.”
