Reborn with a Space: Building a Fortune Amidst Famine

Chapter 304: 304 Wedding

”Xiao Tan, you’re back? Is this a family visit?”

Tan Shaoting’s face lit up. ”Group Leader Ma, I have some time off. I’m back to get married, the wedding is at noon today. Please come over for the meal, I still need to inform Director Feng.”

Ma Changshun was taken aback for a moment. ”Alright, congratulations to both of you. I’ll be there.”

”Group Leader Ma, please don’t go to any trouble, just your presence is all that’s needed.”

Ma Changshun nodded with a smile. Especially since that girl gave him something, he couldn’t possibly show up empty-handed.

After speaking, Tan Shaoting headed to Zhao Qingxiang’s house.

Ma Dongmei had overheard everything. She was feeling quite upset inside; how could he come back to get married? What was so special about Su Yuanyuan?

There’s no hope for her now; they’re getting married today. But then it hit her, Su Yuanyuan isn’t even of age yet. But she quickly became dejected again. Honestly, how many people pay attention to age these days? In the countryside, there are plenty who get married younger than Su Yuanyuan.

Ma Changshun went straight to his room to tidy up a bit; since it’s a wedding, he needed to change into something suitable.

Ma Dongmei followed him in. ”Dad, let me come with you.”

”You’re not a kid anymore, aren’t you embarrassed to go?”

”What’s embarrassing about it?”

”You stay. It’s enough for me to go alone. One less person means less work for them.”

Ma Dongmei couldn’t just let it go. She thought for a moment, then left.

Zheng Lanying was lying down when she heard a knock on the door. It was Ma Dongmei.

”Lan Ying, Tan Shaoting is back, and he’s getting married today. Let’s go and enjoy some good food.”

Zheng Lanying was a bit stunned. ”I won’t go; you go. I wasn’t invited. What sense does it make for me to go?”

How could he be getting married already? She had just visited yesterday, and he hadn’t said a word. How could she just show up now?

Plus, what’s the point of her going? Seeing the man she liked getting married to someone else? That’s a huge joke on her.

Zheng Lanying laughed bitterly. She shouldn’t entertain unrealistic thoughts anymore.

Ma Dongmei was irked by Zheng Lanying’s refusal to cooperate. If it weren’t for her giving some advice, would she be living this comfortably now? What an ingrate.

”Are you really not going? You’re not going to see Tan Shaoting? He’s the handsomest guy I’ve ever seen.”

Now Zheng Lanying understood why Ma Dongmei was always causing trouble for Su Yuanyuan. So this was the reason?

Didn’t she ever look at herself before having such thoughts? It’s truly baffling. Doesn’t she use a mirror?

”Dongmei, since I didn’t get an invite, I’m not going. I won’t hold you up.”

Ma Dongmei left in a huff. Why wasn’t Zheng Lanying listening? If she went together, she might escape being scolded. But going alone, her father definitely wouldn’t spare her. So she reluctantly went home.

Tan Shaoting ran to the Zhao family, and Zhao Qingxiang was quite pleased to see him come back.

”Xiao Tan, you’re back?”

”Yes, Mr. Zhao, I’m here to invite your family to my house. Yuanyuan and I are getting married today.”

”That’s wonderful news, congratulations!”

”Thanks, Mr. Zhao. I won’t stay long, I need to notify Zhao Qingjie as well.”

”Do you have more invitations to send out? I can go to my brother’s place. You go to others.”

”Thank you, Mr. Zhao. I still need to head to Director Feng’s house.

And your sister, I’m not sure where she is, could you inform her?”

The Zhao siblings and their spouses all lived in the same village. Considering Yuanyuan’s feelings, she was being considerate of them too. They were practically her in-laws now, so they had to be informed.

Zhao Qingxiang nodded. ”No problem, you go ahead.”

Watching as Tan Shaoting ran off, Zhao Qingxiang went back inside and saw his wife already preparing.

”Xiao Yun, wait for me at home. I’ll pick you up after I visit Qingjie, then I’ll head to Xiao Jing’s.”

”Okay, will you take the cart?”

”Yeah, it’s faster that way.”

Meanwhile, Tan Shaoting reached Feng Baoshan’s home. As it was only the tenth day of the lunar new year, everyone was still off work.

”Director Feng.”

”When did you get back, Xiao Tan?”

”I returned yesterday. Director Feng, I’m here to invite you to attend my wedding with Yuanyuan.”

”Haha, good for you. Marrying someone like Xiao Su is your good fortune. It’s today?”

Tan Shaoting nodded, sweating profusely by now.

”Yes, it’s at noon today. Director Feng, I need to head back now. There are lots of things to handle at home.”

Feng Baoshan chuckled and nodded. ”Alright, off you go. I’ll leave shortly. Want to catch a ride back together on my cart?”

Tan Shaoting shook his head. ”No, thank you. I’ll just run back.”

Watching the youthful exuberance, Feng Baoshan smiled, thinking it’s great to be young.

By the time Tan Shaoting arrived home, the tables were already set up.

The cold dishes weren’t much: marinated cabbage hearts, a plate of brown sugar radish strips, one of vermicelli, and one of sausage.

The hot dishes included braised pork, and dried green beans and eggplant braised in meat broth. There was a pot of pickled vegetables and stir-fried cabbage with pork slices.

That was about it. Actually, there was fish too, but it wasn’t cooked. Due to the sudden decision, there was no time to cook it. So this would have to do.

It was quite the spread already, using Su Yuanyuan’s enamel bowls, one of which was full of braised pork.

The rice and cornbread were steaming away. Su Yuanyuan checked her space, but found no baijiu. She frowned as she found a few bottles of good wine, but it wasn’t the right time to bring them out.

So there was no alcohol. However, she did prepare some dried fruits, which counted as sweets. After all, she hadn’t bought any fruit candy from around here, so it wouldn’t be fitting to bring it out.

By the time Tan Shaoting got home, the Zhao Brothers hadn’t arrived yet.

There was nothing much for him to do here, so Su Yuanyuan told him to get on the kang. After running all the way, he was drenched with sweat.

She found him some new cotton clothes to change into.

”Yuanyuan, don’t you have any new clothes? A woman’s wedding day is once in a lifetime. You should dress up a bit.”

”Is it really necessary?”

”Absolutely necessary. Go on, today you’re the bride.”

Though the wedding was being kept as simple as possible, a woman’s wedding day was once in a lifetime, and she should leave a beautiful impression.

Su Yuanyuan found a new set of clothes, an outer layer to wear over winter clothes.

Both of them wearing new clothes indeed had a special feel to it.

Zhao Yanli came rushing in. ”Yuanyuan, I’m home for a bit. I have some red cloth I planned to use for headscarves for Second Sister-in-law and my Second Sister’s kids. My big sister can make flowers, so I’ll make a big red flower for each of you.”

Su Yuanyuan quickly stopped Zhao Yanli. ”I have red scarves, we can use these.”

Zhao Yanping also came in from outside. By then, Su Yuanyuan had already found two red scarves.
