Reborn with a Space: Building a Fortune Amidst Famine

Chapter 190: 190 varieties of winter wheat

Su Yuanyuan truly feels there’s something wrong with this woman.

She doesn’t want to deal with someone like that, so she just puts on a polite smile.

Bai Shanshan isn’t foolish either, she notices Su Yuanyuan’s perfunctory attitude, snorts, and leaves without a word.

Only then does Su Yuanyuan feel a lot calmer.

Actually, last time when Zhao Yanli mentioned to her that many people were interested in Tan Shaoting at the farm, she really thought about it.

Rationally speaking, Tan Shaoting wouldn’t leave her.

She herself doesn’t have any special feelings for him right now. It’s nice to have someone by her side; it could be Tan Shaoting or someone else.

Today, someone reminded her again, and it seems Tan Shaoting is indeed quite popular.

Su Yuanyuan’s idea is to just go with the flow. She’s still young now, who knows what might happen in the future or who she might meet. Thinking too much now is pointless.

Zhao Yanli is doing very well at the supply and marketing cooperative, and this time there are ten pairs of women’s side-opened shoes, which are very popular.

Although cloth shoes are quite simple and anyone handy can make them at a glance, their price isn’t high at all. The main thing is that the fabric is pretty good.

So the shoes Zhao Yanli and her group brought over are very popular.

Then they bought some cord, big needles, lamp oil, salt, and matches.

Zhao Yanli walks out beaming with excitement.

Seeing the smile on her face, Su Yuanyuan feels that sometimes this kind of satisfaction is really touching.

”Yuanyuan, they said they want us to bring more next time, and they hope we can make cotton shoes. We’ve been holding onto more than ten pounds of cotton and haven’t used it because it was too precious to us.”

”Then don’t make them.”

”But it’s income, you know? My older brother hasn’t even started looking for a sister-in-law for us, even though there are often people interested in him. But since he takes care of all of us, some people are turned off.”

”That’s because they don’t have any sense. Can your brother manage all the work himself? It takes all of you to help.”

”That’s exactly what my brother says and he’s fine without a wife for now.”

”Xiao Li, do you still want to go check out the big building?”

Zhao Yanli is quite torn. Of course, she wants to go, but then she’d want everything she sees, and that would cost money.

”No, I’ll save my money instead.”

Su Yuanyuan simply smiles, ”Alright, let’s head back then.”

”Yuanyuan, aren’t you buying anything? If you want to, I’ll watch the donkey cart.”

Su Yuanyuan laughs and shakes her head, ”I don’t really have anything to buy. Let’s go, it won’t be too late when we get back.”

On the way back, Su Yuanyuan teaches Zhao Yanli how to drive the cart; she’s so enthusiastic about it and does all the driving on the way home.

”Haha, next time I can drive the cart myself!”

Su Yuanyuan doesn’t want to dampen her enthusiasm.

It was nearly eleven at night when the two finally arrived home. Seeing Su Yuanyuan back, Tan Shaoting was relieved; he thought to himself that next time, no matter what, he would accompany her. Waiting at home made him even more anxious.

This girl needs to be under my watch to feel at ease.

The days ahead were still the same.

Until August came, bringing the rainy season, it rained every few days.

”Is it trying to make up for three years of missed rain? The cabbages might rot this way.”

”What can you do when the sky wants to rain?”

Su Yuanyuan sighed, wasn’t that the truth?

”Yuanyuan, let me teach you how to paint talismans. Look, here’s the Godspeed Talisman I figured out, stick it on your leg and your speed can be increased a lot.”

”By how much?”

”About twice as much, I guess.”

”That’s really not bad.”

Tan Shaoting drew out the Godspeed Talisman and let Su Yuanyuan practice, making sure not to have any gaps in the strokes.

Su Yuanyuan spent the whole day practicing.

She wasn’t good with a soft brush at all, and it frustrated her to the point of giving up.

”I’m done, you draw a few for me.”

Tan Shaoting watched from the side, surprised that she had no talent at all. She couldn’t even trace over the lines.

It was truly his first time seeing someone without a hint of talent. Oh well, nobody’s perfect.

As August came in, time passed quickly. Because of the abundant rain, the greens in the fields were quite good, especially the radishes, which grew exceptionally well.

By late August, Tan Shaoting and Su Yuanyuan started planting wheat. They calculated the weather here and figured it would take them five days to plant, so doing it now wasn’t too far off from the end of the month.

Su Yuanyuan intentionally left the wheat field in the middle plot. Both thought this piece of land was good.

Between the two of them they were pretty quick, taking a week to cover thirty acres.

The wheat sown on the first day already broke through the soil.

This time, Su Yuanyuan soaked the wheat seeds in Spiritual Spring Water, hoping they’d survive the winter.

When Feng Baoshan and Ma Changshun came over, both had already finished planting the wheat.

”Weren’t you going to wait until the end of the month?”

”We thought about the weather these past few years and decided a few days earlier might be better.”

The two of them also went to look at the wheat field. It was already sprouting, looking dense and lively, a rich dark green.

There were no problems with growth now, just waiting to see how they’d fare winter.

”We hope it works. You’ve planted thirty acres, and if it does well, the yield can be used as seed,” Feng Baoshan said, smiling brightly.

Ma Changshun was also quite eager. If the wheat really turned out well, that would be great—just see what the yield would be.

Back in their hometown, they had spring wheat, but the yield was too low. Now everyone was hoping for success.

The wheat fetched a better price than corn, which made more sense economically.

”Xiao Tan, what are you going to do with your vegetables? Are you really going to take them over?”

Tan Shaoting nodded, ”That’s the plan, but we haven’t decided fully yet. We’ll check this week at the train station. There are no direct trains here; we’ll have to transfer. Not sure how many changes, so we’ll find out. If it’s doable, we’ll take them all over. It’s something heartfelt from the two of us. If not, there’s nothing we can do.

We’ve thought about it. If it doesn’t work out, we’ll store the cabbages in the cellar. If that doesn’t pan out, we can pickle them, and for the radishes, we’ll just dry them into strips.”

”I was actually thinking of asking you two to help everyone sell vegetables,” Feng Baoshan laughed.

He knew these two kids wouldn’t stay at home; they’d already been out for a couple of years. He thought they would want to go out.

The two just smiled, thinking that even if they went to the border, they wouldn’t help with selling vegetables. It wasn’t that simple.

Ma Changshun, listening to what Su Yuanyuan said earlier, thought that if they could dry the radishes into strips, that would keep until next year. If radishes can be done this way, then cabbages can also be dried.
