Reborn with a Space: Building a Fortune Amidst Famine

Chapter 186: 186 It’s raining

”Yuanyuan, I just arrived a few days ago and haven’t gone over yet. It’s really inconvenient.”

Su Yuanyuan just smiled, thinking to herself that things don’t always go as you wish.

Looking at the girl next to her glowing with energy, Su Yuanyuan laughed.

”Yuanyuan, why don’t you eat lunch?”

”You know I don’t lack food. I really can’t eat this kind of meal.”

”This is already good enough. Haven’t you seen even little kids come to work? Isn’t it all for a bit to eat? You should save your food. Who knows how long this drought will last?” Zhao Yanli advised earnestly.

”This year, our sweet potatoes and potatoes are enough for us to eat next year, so even if it’s still dry, we won’t go hungry.”

”You have such an open mind.”

Su Yuanyuan laughed. Isn’t that true? After experiencing so much over two lifetimes, if she didn’t have an open mind, she would have been depressed long ago.

After returning home, the two washed up. Tan Shaoting lit the fire, and Su Yuanyuan watered the winter melon seedlings. Then, they began to eat.

Today, they ate dumplings, all made by Su Yuanyuan in a previous life and stored up a lot, though they had eaten quite a few already.

”Yuanyuan, these dumplings are delicious.”

”Of course, they’re seafood. This year, when we go out to the seaside, you’ll taste the authentic seafood there, and you’re sure to love it.”

”You’re really knowledgeable about food.” Tan Shaoting teased Su Yuanyuan with a smile.

”Aren’t I? It’s also a kind of joy.

Don’t you burn a fire in your room at night?”

”I’m practicing tonight, so I’ll be in your room.”

”Can’t you just drink some water and go back to your room to practice? You’ll disturb me here.”

Ever since knowing about Divine Sense, Su Yuanyuan rarely enters the space, fearing Tan Shaoting might discover it.

”How could I disturb you? You can practice or sleep, I won’t make a noise.”

”It doesn’t feel right. Plus, we’re old enough now to observe propriety between men and women.”

”How old are we, really? We’ve been together for three years now, what is there to mind?”

Su Yuanyuan decided to ignore him. Even if he wasn’t in the same room, she wouldn’t dare to enter the space.

Forget it, let him do as he pleases.

The next day, after breakfast, the two went to the reservoir, which was quite close to Su Yuanyuan’s home.

”I’m afraid my house won’t make it,” Su Yuanyuan sighed.

”It should be fine. This section will be repaired, and it’s already the end of June. By early July, it’ll rain, and there won’t be time to dig the reservoir.”

”By then, nothing can be planted here, right?”

”What should we plant?”

”There are only two months left. There’s no time to plant anything except radishes and cabbage. Let the director find a market outside for us.”

There’s no point in thinking about crops. We just hope the potatoes and sweet potatoes in each household’s field will harvest, so we don’t go hungry.

When the two arrived, some people were already working. Honestly, Su Yuanyuan really admired these current folks. Their enthusiasm for work was far superior to those lazy and gluttonous people in later generations.

There were no longer any group divisions, but each group leader would have everyone take turns working, though some people were not satisfied, overall there weren’t any issues.

Initially, it was all about digging straight down. Now, they have to slope it, otherwise, the soil can’t be transported.

The sky was overcast today, and everyone kept glancing up from time to time.

Many people were discussing whether it would rain.

But even if it rains, what can they plant?

Everyone was discussing this question.

”Let’s all plant vegetables, and when the time comes, our farm will find a market, and we should be able to sell them for money, right?”

When Su Yuanyuan suggested this, everyone became more animated in their discussions. Feng Baoshan, listening on the side, also felt it made sense. It was just that finding a market was the problem.

Feng Baoshan also saw the situation and made a special trip to the city to consult the meteorological department, which replied that the humidity was gradually increasing.

Whatever was said left Feng Baoshan with a foggy picture, but he finally understood that it might rain.

He drove to the office, finally meeting the big leader after half an hour.

”Leader, what else can we plant?”

The leader was also very troubled, as indeed nothing was suitable for planting at this time.

Seeing the leader’s frown, Feng Baoshan suggested, ”Can we all plant vegetables? We could sell them for money, couldn’t we?”

”If your farm all plants vegetables, even our province can’t consume it all.”

”Then we’ll use trains to transport them out.”

”People can’t even afford meals, who will buy vegetables?” The leader was also very troubled.

”But we can’t just leave the land barren. I still think planting vegetables is feasible. Leader, could you arrange to help us find a market, or give us permission slips to sell the vegetables ourselves?”

”I’ll discuss your idea with the provincial leaders. Go back for now, and come again when it really starts raining.”

The leader neither agreed nor rejected, and Feng Baoshan took it as a yes, so he happily drove back.

Even though it was nighttime, the donkey was familiar with the night path, so there was no issue.

After getting home, he shared the situation with everyone.

”Director Feng, should we still keep digging the reservoir larger?”

”Let’s rest for a few days. It’s already quite big, over three hundred acres. The most crucial thing is the depth.”

Everyone was anxious, hoping for rain.

Yet, a week later, the sky was still overcast without rain.

Everyone was too superstitious to say anything, fearing it would jinx it.

Into July, the weather stayed the same. Feng Baoshan went to see Tan Shaoting and Su Yuanyuan.

”If it does rain, are you prepared to plant wheat?”

Tan Shaoting nodded, ”Of course, but we’ll have to wait until September to plant. We’ll see if it survives the winter. If so, then next year we can plant a lot; if not, we’ll have to wait until May next year to plant, and see if we can harvest before the freeze here.”

Feng Baoshan nodded, agreeing this was the best plan.

Everyone was on edge now. On the morning of the fifth, the sky was particularly dark, but everyone went to work as usual.

Within an hour, large raindrops began to fall.

Everyone cheered at the bottom of the pit. Finally saved. Even if this year’s harvest was doomed, they could plant next year.

Feng Baoshan sent everyone home, especially those far away.

”Xiao Li, do you want to come to my house to take shelter from the rain?”

Zhao Qingxiang shook his head. ”We’ll go home.”

By the time Su Yuanyuan and Tan Shaoting got home, the rain was pouring down. Everyone on the road likely got drenched.
