Reborn with a Space: Building a Fortune Amidst Famine

Chapter 161: 161 Road

”Hmm, if not, then not. Let’s go and see if we can exchange for some fabric. It probably has to come from private hands.”

Tan Shaoting was mainly afraid that if they couldn’t get the fabric, she’d be disappointed. Hearing her say this, he was relieved.

The two of them wandered around the city, found a less populated area, and pulled out a pushcart with over a hundred winter melons on it, then covered it with a straw mat.

This place wasn’t far from the textile factory. When they got to the entrance, it was just getting off work time there.

Workers saw a cart full of large winter melons, and they surrounded it completely.

”One and a half per melon. It was like a frenzy to get them.”

”Beautiful ladies, don’t worry, if you have fabric you can exchange with me, us folks from the countryside just lack that.”

”How to exchange?” Workers from the textile factory still had benefits. They could buy defects very cheaply.

”Sisters, I don’t know either?”

At this moment, an older woman spoke up. ”I’ll exchange defective products with you, three feet for two winter melons.”

Su Yuanyuan immediately nodded, ”Okay, I trust you, Auntie.”

”But I didn’t bring any with me now.”

”No problem, Auntie, you take the winter melons home today, I’ll come by tomorrow to pick it up.”

Seeing such a straightforward girl, everyone felt a little embarrassed.

”How about this, I’ll go back to get it, could you save four winter melons for me?”

”Sure, if anyone wants to exchange, let me know how much, I’ll save it for you, but later I need to move; this place is not suitable. It’s against the rules.”

The elder woman thought for a while, ”You can go into the textile factory, but you can only stay at the gatehouse.”

”Alright, I’ll head in later.”

”Just tell the gatekeeper that Director Tian let you in.”

With that, everyone started making decisions, and in the end, no one wanted to buy with money, everyone wanted to exchange.

Su Yuanyuan and Tan Shaoting pulled their cart into the textile factory, and both of them felt relieved. The earlier commotion was too loud. They were really afraid of being caught.

The gatekeeper was a very talkative old man, chatting with them about the south and the north.

After about an hour, people started coming over to make exchanges one after another.

Finally, Su Yuanyuan called Director Tian, ”Aunt Tian, I also have corn kernels, wheat, pork here.”

”You have pork too?”

”Yes.”

”How much do you have?”

Su Yuanyuan smiled, ”Aunt Tian, how much do you need?”

”Twenty pounds, give me twenty pounds, is that okay?”

”Yes, the ribs area, is that okay?”

”No rear cut? My child only likes lean meat.”

”Of course, I’ll give you ten pounds of each. It’s all one price, two and a half per pound.”

Director Tian smacked her lips; two and a half was really a high price, but she also knew you couldn’t buy meat at all now, with these twenty pounds of meat, their family of four could eat till summer. Calculated this way, it’s not expensive.

Finally, she gritted her teeth, ”Alright. Give me ten pounds of each, how much for the wheat?”

”Thirty-five cents a pound, Aunt Tian, do you have a place to grind flour?”

”Yes, we have a steel grinder here. The flour that comes out is delicious. Give me fifty pounds of wheat, and how about the corn?”

”Corn is twenty-five cents a pound.”

”Then give me fifty pounds of cornmeal too.”

”Alright, Aunt Tian, we’ll follow you home to recognize your place. We’ll deliver it around eleven tonight.”

”Ok, let’s go. My home is not far from here.”

Since the two of them spoke quietly, a few people were very curious.

”Sister Tian, what’s the good news?”

”Little girl, this is Director Lu from our third workshop, absolutely trustworthy.”

Su Yuanyuan smiled and nodded, also telling Director Lu the prices.

”Little girl, I want the same amount. I’ll be waiting at Sister Tian’s house tonight.”

That made another deal, indeed factory workers dare to spend money.

The two of them left the textile factory after seven o’clock. They found a wind-sheltered spot, each had a cup of milk tea, and then ate meat buns.

They pulled out another cart to load furniture.

When they knocked on the door, it quickly opened.

”You came? I was afraid you wouldn’t.”

”Don’t worry, since we said we would, we’ll definitely come.”

The pretty girl lit a kerosene lamp for them. Su Yuanyuan handed her a flashlight, ”Comrade, help us shine a bit.”

This whole house of furniture, the two of them packed two full carts. Finally, they tied it up with rope.

Su Yuanyuan handed the pretty girl half a bag of corn.

”Comrade. See, this is fifty pounds of corn kernels. Also, please tell your grandma, we will surely cherish this furniture.”

”Alright, I’ll definitely tell my grandma.”

Having sold the furniture, the whole family felt at ease.

The two of them were pulling the cart down the road, which was pitch black. There wasn’t a bit of light, even if someone hadn’t gone to sleep, you couldn’t see the glow from kerosene lamps outside.

The furniture was really quite heavy, although mostly made of red pine, there was still some valuable wood.

Also, a hundred bucks was genuinely not much for it.

After walking for a while, the two turned into an alley, following Tan Shaoting’s advice, let Su Yuanyuan put it all away in the space.

It took an hour to load the cart, so now it was almost ten, and the two of them dragged a cart to Director Tian’s house.

It was similar there; a knock on the door and it quickly opened. The cart was loaded with what they needed.

Director Tian was a cautious person; she weighed every item, ensuring every bit was slightly more, but never less.

”Little girl, you two drink some water. We have a few good bolts of fabric here, see if you want them, rest assured, we’ll give it to you at the lowest price. This bolt is twenty meters, one meter costs one yuan. If you buy at the supply and marketing cooperative, it usually costs two yuan for a meter, right? Besides, the quality of our fabric is particularly good.”

Su Yuanyuan didn’t understand these things, but touching the fabric, it indeed felt quite thick.

”Alright, thank you, Director Tian.”

Each of them had eighty yuan, each took two bolts of fabric, one military green, one ginger yellow, one royal blue, and one gray.

The rest, each of them paid forty yuan.

Both sides were quite satisfied. Su Yuanyuan and her companion pulled the cart and left.

On the way, they put away the cart and hurried to the train station. No matter where to, as long as it was the right direction, they directly bought the tickets.

Tan Shaoting still used winter melon to exchange for a sleeper ticket. Only then did they have time to sit down and eat.

At this time, there weren’t many people taking the train. So for these three days, the two of them occupied a carriage, very leisurely.

Regarding the gains in C City, Su Yuanyuan was very satisfied.

Thinking that if it goes like this, all the way down, they really could sell some of the space’s stock.
