Reborn with a Space: Building a Fortune Amidst Famine

Chapter 179: Task 179

But Wang Hao gave him two hundred jin of grain, which made things a bit better.

Actually, to say he didn’t have any personal motives is impossible. He always exaggerated the seriousness, hoping that he’d proactively ask for his help to hide things. Who knew he’d sell all the one hundred taels of Jinyu?

How could Wang Hao not feel his brother-in-law’s intent, so he sold everything, saying he’d leave only one hundred taels, making things simpler.

Moreover, saying the money was all converted into grain. This way, it made sense, and if they wanted to cause trouble later, it wouldn’t benefit them.

Who would want to do something with no gain? So, for now, he’s relatively safe.

The city they were planning to get off at this time would take a few days, so they still had sleeper tickets.

Su Yuanyuan didn’t know the farm was already looking for them.

Mainly because they wanted to send them abroad again.

But Sun Baoshan didn’t know exactly where they went, and it was the train station that notified them.

So the two of them were playing poker when the train police arrived.

They were both a bit surprised but followed them to the police office.

”Are you two Tan Shaoting and Su Yuanyuan?”

They nodded.

”The higher-ups want you to immediately head to the border to find Zhang Chunsheng, Mr. Zhang.”

They nodded, knowing this meant they were to go abroad.

”Everything has been arranged; at the next stop, there’s a train going that way, you just need to follow.”

”Yes.”

This was the mission; they had no objections. It was all the same wherever they went.

The two returned to the compartment. ”Didn’t expect they’d really find us.”

”I’m quite impressed with the current information network.”

”We need to take out some stuff. Otherwise, we might end up spending more than a month on the train.”

Su Yuanyuan nodded. Indeed, they needed to take out at least their luggage and some food.

”I was thinking we’d go next year. Now, going at this time, will we have any of our own time left?

Maybe we should split up. You handle gathering grain while I take a look outside?”

Tan Shaoting shook his head. ”If the time is tight, then you gather the grain, and I’ll go outside.” How could he let her go outside alone?

Su Yuanyuan shook her head. ”It’s safer if I go. Trust me; it’s definitely better for me to go than you. Gathering grain is pretty troublesome. I’d rather go out myself.”

Tan Shaoting didn’t speak. He was conflicted, too, not feeling secure having her stay to deal with those foreigners alone.

”Don’t worry, I can take care of myself even if I encounter big animals, plus I’m giving you a stun baton. I’ll keep one too; it’ll last for a while.”

”Let’s wait till we reach the border and then decide.”

Su Yuanyuan smiled, thinking she wanted to enrich her space.

They didn’t come out for meals, waiting until 1 PM to get off with big bags and suitcases in hand.

Two sets of luggage along with two big bags of food to cover their real needs.

This time they were on a freight train, a direct one. Most of the cargo was cotton and similar goods.

The freight train only stops for inspections, so it’s faster than a passenger train.

They were given a room with only two beds.

Except for meals, they mostly stayed inside the compartment.

On the night of the thirtieth, they brought out their food to share a meal with the train police and attendants.

The supplies were decent, but they couldn’t compare to what the two of them had.

”This is what the two of us prepared, thinking we’d spend the New Year on the train, but ended up on a train to the border, which turned out useful.”

Twenty-five days later, they reached the border, where Zhang Chunsheng was waiting for them.

”Mr. Zhang.”

”You two really take the long route; if it weren’t for looking at the train station, we might not have found you at all.”

Initially, they planned to send replacements, but the last team couldn’t be contacted either. Given the situation, it’s quite dangerous going over there.

Zhang Chunsheng explained the situation on the other side to them.

”There’s danger this time, but we really don’t have many people who know the language on that side to send.”

Tan Shaoting frowned, ”I can go alone.”

Su Yuanyuan was speechless. ”Let’s go together, one in the open and one in secret.”

”Wait for me here.”

Su Yuanyuan glanced at Tan Shaoting, thinking she’d be safer than him. If needed, she could hide.

Zhang Chunsheng watched them, thinking they both needed to go, but he said nothing.

Su Yuanyuan patted Tan Shaoting’s arm. ”Let’s go together for mutual support.”

Tan Shaoting still frowned. He worried that if he refused, she might sneak over on her own.

Dealing with them and gathering grain would reduce her risk.

Zhang Chunsheng saw they were silent. ”This time, you’ll be rewarded when you return.”

Su Yuanyuan smiled. ”Comrade, it’s our duty. It’s our honor to contribute to the country at this time.”

Whether rewarded or not is up to them, but kind words are always nice.

Zhang Chunsheng nodded. ”Yes, you’ll take fifty thousand over with you this time, and another task is to look for people from our side who went over.”

They both nodded, knowing they’d do their best to find them, though success was uncertain.

Zhang Chunsheng handed them a bag, ”Here’s fifty thousand, all for wheat. If you can get meat, even better. Last year, you did a great job.

Also, inside are details of the two who went, including their photos.

In an hour, the train will leave. Go and prepare.”

”Mr. Zhang, are we still to find Ivanov when we get there?”

Zhang Chunsheng nodded, ”He’s still our contact. If you find anything wrong, make your own decisions.”

”Mr. Zhang, we have nothing more to prepare, we’ll do our best with the mission.”

Zhang Chunsheng nodded, knowing there was no other choice. Relations between the two countries were too tense. Hopefully, the two of them would succeed.

Finally, Zhang Chunsheng softened and handed them another bag at his feet.

”These are guns. You might not use them, but they can sometimes be a deterrent.”

Tan Shaoting opened it to find two pistols, along with plenty of bullets.

”Let me take this chance to teach you.”

Fifteen minutes later, Zhang Chunsheng felt quite disheartened. He remembered it took days to hit a target during his shooting practice, yet these two could hit within minutes. Was he really that dull? Zhang Chunsheng fell into deep self-doubt. It seemed he just wasn’t up to par.
