Sweet Nostalgia of the 80s

Chapter 136: Chapter 135: Bringing Food to the Fields

Qin Jian’s retreating figure was all too familiar to him.

”Sweat! That’s totally normal! Probably just been too long since he’s seen his sister-in-law and he misses her, right?” Tian Niu spoke anxiously for Qin Jian, ”Qin Gong, you’re already of age, you should hurry up and marry your sister-in-law. I’m getting anxious for you. What if one day there’s an accidental fire... hehe, right?”

Jian Ying glanced at Qin Jian’s expressionless face, chuckled, and explained to Tian Niu, ”An Hao is only eighteen, not yet of legal age to get married. We’ll have to wait at least two more years. Besides, with Qin Gong’s cold nature, it’s going to take a while for the girl to warm up to him.”

”Enough!” Qin Jian, having listened to the two of them murmuring all morning, felt like his ears were developing calluses, ”I’m telling you two, from now on, when you see An Hao in the village, don’t just start calling out. Joking should be done at the right time and place! If anyone causes me trouble, hmm hmm...”

Jian Ying: ”...”

Tian Niu: ”...”

Commander Qin’s cold disposition really is selective. He’s already so protective of a sister-in-law he hasn’t even brought home yet.

*****************

In the blink of an eye, the weekend arrived, and An Hao and An Ping were at home reviewing their schoolwork.

Ever since her showdown with Bai Yanjiao half a month ago, she put her foot down and no longer contributed a cent to the household, nor did she repay that ten yuan.

That evening, upon returning from the fields and seeing Bai Yanjiao aggrieved, Bai Xue dragged An Shuchao off to find An Hao to settle the matter.

Perhaps An Hao’s words struck a chord in An Shuchao, who usually advocated for dialing big issues down and letting small issues slide. For the first time, he showed his temper to Bai Xue.

Seeing that even her husband wasn’t taking her side, Bai Xue’s temper cooled down considerably. They still had to live life. Knowing that Old An was in a bad mood with a broken leg and that the household was relying on An Hao to pay off debts, she had no choice but to suppress her own frustrations.

Behind closed doors, she comforted her daughter Bai Yanjiao a lot.

After a few more days, Bai Xue noticed that An Hao had completely abandoned all household responsibilities, leaving them without a penny, unable to even buy food. An Hao showed no intention of taking charge at all.

Left with no choice, Bai Xue asked someone to take Bai Yanjiao to town to work at the garment factory.

At the very least, they could earn some money to help with household expenses.

As for herself, Bai Xue busily worked in the fields from dawn to dusk to earn work points, supporting the three members of the An Family, her heart filled with grievances.

But seeing that An Shuchao wasn’t in a good mood either, she kept her complaints to herself.

Working in the production team was very tiring, and just after the rain had stopped, it was the perfect time for tilling and sowing.

With a production team and over a hundred acres of land to farm, there wasn’t even time to come back for lunch in the rush to plant the crops.

An Shuchao sat at the base of a wall with a leg propped up, basking in the sun. Seeing that the sun was high in the sky and Bai Xue had not returned, he knew she was busy with the production team and couldn’t come back.

So, he urged An Hao to prepare the meal, so she could take it to Bai Xue after eating.

At first, An Hao was reluctant, but seeing the look of concern on her father’s face, she didn’t object any further.

After all, she had spent the whole morning reviewing her lessons until her head was spinning. It was the perfect opportunity to walk through the fields to clear her mind.

After washing her hands, she chopped two radishes and dried cabbage, and boiled them with fishy oil in a big pot. After they ate, An Hao filled a large bowl to the brim for Bai Xue and toasted two flatbreads to put in the basket, then set off to find Bai Xue in the fields.
