The Greykeep Chronicles

Carol came down to breakfast.

That doesn’t sound like much. But she hadn’t come down to breakfast since the Festival of Lanterns. She’d eaten on the roof with Ignatius, among the lightning rods, or not at all, and Helena had stopped setting her place and started leaving a covered plate on the bottom step of the north tower instead, the way you’d leave milk out for a cat you were hoping to tame.

This morning Carol walked into the little kitchen at seven, in her own coat for once, and sat down in her own chair, and took a piece of toast off the rack before Helena had finished putting it down.

Helena looked at her for a moment. Then she put the rack back on the table and went to get another plate, and didn’t say anything at all, which is how you know Helena is very pleased.

* * *

”I’m going to Westmere,” said Carol, with her mouth full.

My father looked up from his porridge.

”Tamar’s council sits at ten,” said Carol. ”About Selvane. About whether she stays.” She swallowed. ”Garrick told me last night. The harbor-master doesn’t want her there because of what Malachar might do about her. And Malachar did what he did to her because of me.” She put her toast down. ”Because of my no. So I’d like to go and stand in that room while they talk about it. If Tamar will have me.”

”You don’t owe them that,” said my mother quietly.

”I know,” said Carol. ”I’d like to go anyway.”

My father looked at her for a long time. Then he looked at me.

”Take your brother,” he said.

”I was going to,” said Carol. ”He doesn’t know it yet.”

I put my spoon down. ”I know it now.”

* * *

Iselle didn’t come.

She’d slept for fourteen hours, with both hands open on the pillow, and when Roderic put his head around her door at eight she was still asleep. He came down and told us, looking worried, and Aurelia, who was at the end of the table with her tea, said, ”Let her sleep. The first time is the heaviest. It was for me.” And then, after a moment: ”Her mother comes tomorrow. Let her sleep for that, too.”

So Roderic sat on the floor outside Iselle’s door with a book, and we went without her.

* * *

I should say something about the Westmere council, because people who live inland don’t understand it.

Greykeep has a king. Westmere has a steward, and the steward has a council, and the council is whoever turns up. That’s the old harbor way. The harbor-master comes, and the wharf owners, and the salt-barge masters, and anybody with a boat who’s got something to say, and they sit on the benches in the great hall of the Hold and say it. And then the steward decides.

The council only advises. Everybody knows that. But a steward who goes against his council too often finds out what it’s like to run a harbor where nobody will pull a rope for him.

Tamar knew it. He was standing at the end of the hall when we came in, by the big hearth, with his arms folded, and he had the look of a man who’d been awake all night doing sums that didn’t come out.

* * *

The hall was full.

Not just the council. Half the town. They were standing along the walls and in the doorways and up on the window ledges. Fishwives with their sleeves rolled up. Boys from the net lofts. Old men in knitted caps. Dunmore was on the front bench with a blanket around his shoulders and a terrible cold, sneezing into a handkerchief the size of a sail.

At the high table, next to Tamar’s empty chair, there were five people.

Master Goss, the harbor-master. A big gray man in a blue coat with brass buttons, with a ledger in front of him. Mistress Ostry, who owns half the south wharf and most of the rope in Westmere. A thin, sour man called Callow, who masters the salt barges. And two more wharf owners I didn’t know.

They all looked up when Carol came in.

The hall went quiet. Not all at once. In a ripple, from the door to the hearth, as people saw who it was.

* * *

”Princess,” said Tamar. He unfolded his arms. ”I didn’t know you were coming.”

”I didn’t send word,” said Carol. ”I’m sorry. May I stand at the back? I won’t speak unless I’m asked.”

”You can sit at the table,” said Tamar.

”I’d rather stand,” said Carol. ”It’s not my hall.”

So we stood at the back, against the wall, between a fishwife and a net-mender’s boy who stared at Carol the whole time with his mouth open. And Tamar sat down in his chair. And the council began.

* * *

Master Goss spoke first.

I’d expected to dislike him. I’d been ready to, ever since Tamar’s face on the tower roof the day before. And I couldn’t. That was the trouble with Master Goss. He was a good man, the way Tamar had said, and it was all over him: in the careful way he opened his ledger, in the way he looked at the fishwives along the wall before he spoke, as if they were the ones he was speaking for.

”I’ll say it plain,” he said. ”I’ve no quarrel with the goddess. None. I’ve been told she lit our north pier for a hundred years, and I believe it.” He put his hand flat on the ledger. ”But I’ve been harbor-master here for twenty-two years, and I’ll tell you what I’ve written in this book since midsummer.”

He opened it.

”Sixty black ships off the outer shoals. Every boat in harbor for nine weeks. Three ships come back in the autumn and sit there for two hours and nineteen minutes, and nobody knows why. A thing out of the sea at Skellow singing children toward the water. Kethran gold on our own coast, buying our own pursers. A man on the Gray Heron carrying a black bottle that nobody will tell me what was in.” He looked up. ”And now this. Thrown into the sea by the Emperor of Kethra himself. A day after this house,” he nodded, not unkindly, at Carol, ”told him no.”

He closed the book.

”I’m not asking that she be turned out,” he said. ”I’m asking that she be sent inland. To Greykeep. Where there’s a castle that can carry it. Westmere is a fishing town. We’ve got a wall and a hold and an old man who fishes off the end of it.” He looked down the hall at Edric Vale, who was sitting on a bench by the door with his hat on his knee, and Edric lifted one hand mildly in acknowledgment. ”With respect, Edric.”

”None taken,” said Edric.

”We can’t carry this,” said Goss. ”That’s all. We can’t.”

* * *

Nobody said anything for a moment.

Then Mistress Ostry said, ”Aye.” And Callow said, ”Aye.” And one of the other wharf owners nodded, and the other one looked at his hands.

Along the walls, there was a low, uneasy murmur. Not angry. Frightened. The way a room sounds when people are thinking about their children.

Tamar sat with his hands flat on the table and didn’t say anything.

* * *

I could feel Carol, beside me, through the middle. She’d gone very still.

Not because of Goss. Because he was right. That was what she was feeling. I knew because I was feeling it too. Everything in that ledger was true, and half of it had come to Westmere because of us. Because of her name in a black letter. Because of her lightning, and her no.

She didn’t move. She’d said she wouldn’t speak unless she was asked.

I put my shoulder against hers.

* * *

”Steward,” said Goss, quite gently. ”We’d like to hear what you think.”

Tamar stood up.

”I think she’d die,” he said.

The hall went quiet again.

”I asked Aurelia last night,” said Tamar. ”Before she went home. What happens to a harbor goddess if you put her in a castle two hundred miles from salt water.” He looked down the hall. ”She’s got one harbor back. One. A cove with sixty boats. She’s holding on to it with both hands. Aurelia says if we take her inland, away from the sea, away from the sound of boats coming in, she won’t have anything to hold on with. She’ll go thin. Thinner. Until you can see the hearth through her. And then she won’t be there at all.”

Mistress Ostry looked down at the table.

”So that’s what I think,” said Tamar. ”I think if we send her inland, we may as well have left her on the sand.”

* * *

”Then she goes up the coast,” said Callow. ”To Orselle. They’ve got walls. They’ve got the Council’s own—”

”Orselle voted eleven to four the last time we asked them anything,” said Tamar. ”The four asked that it be noted they’d be watching. Do you think they’ll take a goddess the Emperor threw away?”

Callow shut his mouth.

”Then what do you propose?” said Goss. Still gently. ”Steward. You know what I’m asking. If he comes. If he sends the ships back. If the sea stands up the way the old songs say it can. What do you propose we do then?”

And Tamar opened his mouth, and I watched him not have an answer.

* * *

That was when Carol said, ”Master Goss?”

Every head in the hall turned.

She hadn’t moved from the wall. She hadn’t raised her voice. She’d just said his name the way you’d say it across a table.

”I said I wouldn’t speak unless I was asked,” she said. ”So I’m asking. May I?”

Goss looked at her for a long moment. Then at Tamar. Tamar nodded, very slightly.

”Go on,” said Goss.

* * *

Carol came forward. Not far. Just out from the wall, into the middle of the floor, where everyone could see her. The net-mender’s boy shuffled back to make room.

”My name,” she said, ”is Carol Clara Grey.”

I don’t think anyone in that hall had ever heard the middle of it. I’m not sure I’d heard her say it out loud since we were small, and being told off.

”Clara’s after nobody,” said Carol. ”My father told me once. When they named us, he and my mother, they didn’t give us anybody’s name to live up to. No grandmothers. No kings. Just names they liked the sound of, that they could whisper beside a cradle and call across an orchard. So we wouldn’t owe anybody anything for them.” She looked at Goss. ”I’m telling you because I want you to know who’s speaking. Not the Princess. Not the girl in the Emperor’s letter. Just me. Carol Clara Grey. Who owes you something.”

Goss frowned. ”Owes me what?”

”Your ledger,” said Carol. ”Every line in it since midsummer. Half of them are there because of me. The ships came because of a letter with my name in it. The gold came because the Emperor wanted the Council to stop protecting me. The bottle on the Heron was meant for me.” She took a breath. ”And Selvane is lying on your steward’s cot this morning because two nights ago I told the Emperor of Kethra no, and he couldn’t reach me anymore, so he reached her.”

* * *

The hall was very quiet.

”So you’re right,” said Carol. ”Master Goss. You’re right to be frightened. I’d be frightened. I am frightened.” Her hands were open at her sides. ”And I’m not going to stand here and tell you he won’t come. I don’t know what he’ll do. Nobody does.”

”Then what are you telling us?” said Mistress Ostry. Not rudely. As if she really wanted to know.

”That you won’t be carrying it alone,” said Carol.

She turned, slowly, so that she was speaking to the walls too. To the fishwives and the net-loft boys and the old men in knitted caps.

”If he comes to Westmere, he comes to Greykeep,” she said. ”There’s a gate in our lower hall with your town’s name on a brass plate over it. It goes both ways. My brother will be through it before the first ship clears the outer shoals. My father will be through it faster than that, and he’ll come as weather. Seraphina will come. I’ll come.” She paused. ”Not to take her away. To stand on your wall next to Edric Vale and help him not catch anything.”

Somebody along the wall laughed. Just once. Surprised into it.

Edric, by the door, lifted his hat an inch.

* * *

”That’s a fine promise,” said Callow. ”From a princess.”

”It isn’t a promise,” said Carol. ”It’s a fact. You can ask my brother.”

They looked at me.

I hadn’t expected to be asked anything. I’d been standing against the wall feeling the shape of the hall, the way I do now in every room without meaning to: the warm old waking in the waterways under us, humming again since yesterday; the fear in the people along the walls, like a draft under a door; Carol’s steadiness beside me like a hand on a rail.

And something else. Something I’d been noticing since the iron room, and hadn’t told anyone. My own edges. Further out than they used to be. I could feel the north pier from where I stood. I could feel the lamp on it. I could feel, very faintly, the line of the outer shoals a mile out, the way you feel the end of a long table with your fingertips in the dark.

”Garrick Elias Grey,” I said, because she’d started it. ”Of Greykeep.”

I stepped out beside her.

”It’s a fact,” I said. ”Master Goss, I can feel your north pier from here. I can feel the shoals. If anything crosses them that shouldn’t, I’ll know before your watch does.” I hesitated. Then I said the rest, because it was true. ”I couldn’t have said that a month ago. I can say it now. And it’s getting further every week.”

Goss looked at me for a long time. At my fingertips, I think. They were still faintly gray.

* * *

And then the door at the back of the hall opened, and Selvane came in.

* * *

She shouldn’t have been able to. She’d been lying on a cot under every blanket in the Hold not twenty-four hours ago. But she was standing in the doorway in Tamar’s wife’s knitted jersey with the sleeves rolled up four times, with one hand on the doorframe and the other closed loosely, carefully, around something small that glowed between her fingers.

Benjamin was behind her, looking like a man who’d lost an argument.

”I’m sorry,” said Selvane, in her careful common tongue. ”I heard my name through the floor. I’ve been listening to people talk about me through floors for a hundred years. I thought this once I’d come up.”

She was still thin. I could see the doorframe through her hand. But she was standing.

”May I come in?” she said. ”It’s your hall. You can say no.”

* * *

Goss stood up.

I didn’t know why at first. Then I understood. He’d stood up because she’d asked. And because he was the harbor-master of Westmere, and when somebody comes to the harbor and asks, the harbor-master stands up. It’s older than the Hold.

”Come in,” he said gruffly.

She came in. Slowly. Down the middle of the hall, between the benches, with Benjamin a step behind and not touching her. People moved their feet out of the way. A fishwife put out a hand to steady her and then pulled it back, and Selvane saw, and stopped, and held out her own free hand, and the fishwife took it.

She stopped in front of the high table. Across from Goss.

”I’ll go,” she said. ”If you ask me to. I want you to know that first. I’ve been sent away from a great many harbors. I know how to go.” She looked down at the small light in her hand. ”I’d rather not. I’d rather stay where I can hear the boats. But it’s your harbor, Master. Not mine. I’ve never once lit a lamp on a pier without asking the harbor first.”

* * *

Goss looked at her for a long time.

”Will he come for you?” he said at last. ”Here. Tell me true.”

Selvane thought about it. She didn’t hurry.

”He doesn’t come for things,” she said. ”Not himself. Not in three hundred years. He waits for them to come to him. That’s how he’s always done it.” She closed her hand a little more around the light. ”But he holds what he takes. And I took something back yesterday. Or someone took it back for me.” A pause. ”He’ll have felt it. I don’t know what he’ll do about it. I’m sorry. I don’t know.”

”That’s honest,” said Goss.

”I’ve no reason to lie to you,” said Selvane. ”You’re the harbor.”

* * *

Goss sat down slowly.

He looked at his ledger for a long time. Then he did something I didn’t expect. He turned back the pages. Not to midsummer. A long way back. Years. The paper went yellow under his hands.

”My boy’s a pilot,” he said, not looking up. ”Wil. He takes the grain ships in over the shoals. Twelve years ago this winter, he went out to bring in a coaster in a gale, in the dark, with the rain coming sideways, and the coaster went on the outer shoals and broke up, and Wil’s boat went over.” He found the page. Put his finger on a line. ”We gave him up at midnight. All of us on the north pier. His mother was there.”

The hall was very quiet.

”He came in at four in the morning,” said Goss. ”Rowing. On his own. He said he’d been out there in the black for hours, going in circles, and then he saw a light. On the end of the north pier. Small. Yellow. He rowed for it.” He looked up, at last, at Selvane. ”There was no lamp on the north pier that night. I was standing on the end of it. I’d have seen it.”

Selvane didn’t say anything.

”I wrote it down,” said Goss. He turned the ledger around so she could see. ”Wil home. 4th hour. Says he saw a lamp.” His voice had gone rough. ”I always wondered whose.”

* * *

Selvane looked at the line for a long time.

”I don’t remember,” she said gently. ”I’m sorry. There were so many. Every night, a boat somewhere that was late.” She looked up. ”But it would have been me. I was always on the end of your pier, those years. Nobody ever saw me. That was the point.”

Goss closed the ledger.

* * *

”I still think it’s a risk,” he said, to Tamar. ”I’ll say so. I’ll put it in the book.” He stood up again. ”And I’ll stand the watch for it. Double, if you want. Wil will stand it with me.”

Mistress Ostry let out a long breath. ”Oh, for pity’s sake. Aye. Keep her.”

Callow didn’t say anything for a long time. Then he said, sourly, ”If the sea stands up, I’m putting my barges in your hall, Steward.”

”You’re welcome to,” said Tamar.

* * *

Tamar stood up.

”Then I’ll say it the old way,” he said, ”so there’s no doubt.”

He put both hands on the table.

”Harbor-right,” he said. ”Any vessel in distress that comes to Westmere and asks is given the harbor. No questions about flags. No questions about who she’s running from. That’s been the law on this coast longer than there’s been a Hold.” He looked at Selvane. ”I’m calling you a vessel in distress. You came in on the tide, holding on to a spar, and you asked. So you have the harbor. For as long as you want it.”

”Aye,” said Dunmore, from the front bench, very thickly, into his handkerchief.

And then along the walls, the fishwives and the net-loft boys and the old men in knitted caps, all at once, and not quietly at all:

”Aye.”

* * *

Selvane didn’t say anything.

She opened her hand, and the little light of Tessaly sat in her palm. And then, very slowly, the way you’d feel your way toward a door in the dark, it got brighter.

Not much. Just a little. Just enough that I couldn’t see her hand through it anymore.

* * *

We stayed for supper. Tamar’s wife wouldn’t hear of anything else. Carol sat at the big table between Goss and Dunmore, and Goss told her about every boat he’d ever brought in, and Carol listened to all of it, and asked questions, and didn’t once look tired.

Afterward, on the sea tower, in the dark, with the lamp burning on the end of the north pier below us, she said:

”You said your whole name.”

”You started it.”

”I know.” She was quiet a moment. ”Elias. I’d forgotten how it sounds. Mother used to use it when you’d broken something.”

”She used Clara when you’d lied about it.”

Carol laughed. Properly. The first time in days.

”I like it,” she said. ”Saying all of it. Carol Clara Grey. It sounds like somebody who’d stand in a hall.” She leaned her head on my shoulder. ”And you said you can feel the shoals.”

”I can.”

”Garrick. That’s a mile.”

”I know.”

She didn’t say anything else. But I felt her, through the middle, not frightened. Glad. As if she’d been waiting for it.

* * *

Mary wrote it that night, from what Carol told her at the kitchen table, with Carol reading over her shoulder and correcting her.

The Westmere council. Goss asked that Selvane be sent inland. Mistress Ostry, Callow and one other agreed.

Tamar: inland, she would die.

Carol asked if she might speak. She said: Carol Clara Grey. Who owes you something. She said: you won’t be carrying it alone.

Garrick said his whole name too. He can feel the outer shoals from the Hold. A mile. He says it is further every week.

Selvane came up through the floor, more or less, and asked. Goss stood up.

Goss’s boy Wil was lost on the shoals twelve winters ago and rowed home to a lamp nobody lit. It is in his ledger.

Harbor-right. Selvane has the harbor. The whole hall said aye.

Tessaly got brighter.

And under that, in Carol’s hand:

Iselle slept through all of it. Her mother comes tomorrow.
