The Greykeep Chronicles

My father came back from fishing at half past eight with nothing in his bucket and salt on his coat.

”Nothing?” said Helena, at the stove, without turning around.

”Nothing,” said my father. ”Edric says that’s the point.” He sat down at the scrubbed table and held his hands out to the fire. ”We counted to a thousand three times. He’s very good at it. He does it in a different order each time so you don’t get bored.”

Helena put an egg in front of him.

”Did it help?” she said.

My father looked at the egg for a long time.

”Yes,” he said.

* * *

Eleanor laid the chain out in the lower hall at ten.

All of it. Every piece we’d brought back from the parade ground at Concordia, in three sacks and a wheelbarrow, carried through the big gate by Thor, who’d refused to let anybody else touch it. Ten anchor-links, still whole, the size of hen’s eggs, with the fist-letters cut deep into them. The eleventh, the one that came up out of the grass like a tooth, in two halves where Seraphina’s fire had split it. Hundreds of links from the great chain, every one cut clean in two, the edges still faintly blue where the First Flame had gone through. Six links stretched long and thin as taffy where Carol had pulled them off her ankles and her waist. And the short broken length that had wrapped around Iselle, which Eleanor laid down by itself, a little way off from the rest, on a clean white cloth.

She put them out on the gray granite floor in front of the six arches, in rows, very neatly, the way she lays out her chisels. And then she knelt down in front of them in her coat with her glass in her eye and her peppermint jar beside her, and read them.

Every one. Twice. With her lips moving.

* * *

Wynn read them with her.

He’d come up from his mother’s at dawn, through the Lyradon arch, the moment the news reached the coast. He’d stood in the lower hall with his pack still on his back and looked at the sacks of iron Thor was carrying through the big gate, and his face had gone white, and then he’d put his pack down and asked Eleanor whether he could help.

She’d looked at him for a long moment. Then she’d nodded and handed him the peppermint jar to hold.

So he knelt beside her on the granite with the jar in his lap and Iselle’s little black book of oath-script open on his knee, the one she’d lent him in the autumn and never asked back. And he read the links with her, one by one, his lips moving the way Eleanor’s do.

He reads oath-script better than she does now. She said so, that morning, without looking up. Wynn went red to the ears and didn’t say anything.

* * *

It took them two hours.

Carol was there, on the bottom step of the main stair, with Ignatius. My father, by the Westmere arch, with his arms folded. Loki, sitting backward on a hard chair he’d carried down from the kitchen, with his tea. Davren, who’d come through the Lyradon arch at nine with his leather case of tuning forks and was walking up and down the rows of iron, very slowly, tapping a fork on his knee and holding it near each link and listening. Thor, standing over all of it with her arms folded and her hammer at her feet, glaring at the chain as if she’d like it to try something.

And me, standing by the six arches, with my hands in my pockets so I wouldn’t touch anything.

At twelve, Wynn sat back on his heels.

”Eleanor,” he said. ”Look at this.”

* * *

He was holding one of the taffy links. One of the ones Carol had pulled off her ankle. It had stretched so long and thin that the fist-letters cut into it had stretched too, pulled out of shape like writing on a balloon. You’d never have read them that way. But Wynn had tilted it in the light from the high lamp, and run his finger along it, and read it the way you’d read a word on a ribbon that’s been twisted.

”It’s not the same,” he said. ”As the anchors.”

Eleanor took the link from him and held it up to her glass.

”The anchors say held,” said Wynn. ”Here held. What stands within is held. Like Iselle read them off Garrick’s chalk.” He pointed at the link in Eleanor’s hand. ”But the chain doesn’t. The chain itself. The links that went around her.” He swallowed. ”They don’t say held at all.”

”What do they say?” said my father, from the Westmere arch.

Wynn looked down at the black book on his knee. Then he read it out. Slowly. The way you read something you’re afraid you’ve got wrong.

”What is held is carried. What is carried is carried whole. What is carried whole arrives.”

* * *

Nobody said anything.

Eleanor turned the link over and over in her fingers under the glass. Then she put it down on the cloth, very gently, and picked up another of Seraphina’s cut halves, and another, and read them too.

”He’s right,” she said at last. ”Every link. The same. Carried. Carried whole. Arrives.” She took the glass out of her eye. ”The anchors make the ring. The ring holds still whatever’s inside it. Locks it. Every god-door shut.” She looked at the long rows of black iron on the gray floor. ”But the chain that goes around you isn’t a lock. It’s a litter.”

”A what?” said Thor.

”A litter,” said Eleanor. ”A carrying-chair. The kind they carry queens in. Or the sick.” She looked up at my father. ”It wasn’t made to hurt her, Uriah. Or to kill her. It was made to carry her. Through that black water in the fountain. To wherever the door went. Whole. Unhurt. Without one hair out of place.”

* * *

My father didn’t say anything for a long time.

Then he said, ”Why?”

”I don’t know,” said Eleanor.

”I do,” said Loki.

Everybody looked at him. He was sitting backward on his chair with his cup of pine-smoke tea, and he wasn’t smiling.

”Because a dead god’s no use to him,” said Loki. ”A dead god’s just a hole where something used to be. And a broken one isn’t much better.” He turned the cup in his hands. ”But a whole one. Every god in the room. Every power she’s ever been lent, kept, safe, carried across the sea without a scratch on it.” He looked at Carol, on the bottom step. ”He doesn’t want to hurt you, Carol. He’s never wanted to hurt you. He wants to have you. All of you. Carried whole. Set down in a room with painted ceilings and no windows. And kept.”

Carol’s hand closed on Ignatius’s sleeve.

”Like a cup on a shelf,” she said.

”Like the best cup on the best shelf in the world,” said Loki. ”Which is worse. Because you don’t break the best cup. You never even drink out of it. You just keep it where you can see it. Forever.”

* * *

”Then the one around Iselle,” said my father. ”Is that a litter too?”

Eleanor looked at the short broken length lying by itself on its white cloth.

She didn’t pick it up. She bent down over it with her glass, close, not touching. And Wynn bent down beside her with the book. And they read it together, very slowly, and I watched both their faces go still.

”No,” said Eleanor.

She didn’t say anything else. Wynn read it out for her.

”What is held is closed. What is closed is ended.”

He put the book down.

”That one’s not a litter,” he said quietly. ”That one was meant for her.”

* * *

Davren had stopped walking.

He was standing at the end of the rows, by the eleventh anchor, Seraphina’s split one, with a tuning fork in his hand. A long thin brass one, from the very bottom of his case. He’d tapped it on his knee and held it close to the split iron, and he was standing very still with his head on one side, the way he stands when he’s hearing something nobody else can.

”Garrick,” he said. ”Come here. Please.”

I went.

”Listen,” said Davren. He tapped the fork again and held it out to me. ”Not to the fork. To the iron. Under it.”

I listened.

And I heard it. Faint. Very faint. Under the bright clean note of the brass, another note, low and cold, coming up out of the split anchor-link like the last ring of a bell that was struck a long way off.

”That’s not Kessavel,” said Davren. ”Kessavel’s note is in the chain. All of it. Every link. I’ve heard it all morning, it’s like a toothache.” He tapped the fork against the split anchor. ”This is different. This is in the anchors only. And in the fountain, I’d bet. In the black water. Wherever the door was.” He looked at me over his spectacles. ”Somebody else made the door, Garrick. Not the chain. The door. Somebody else held it open from the other side.”

* * *

I knew. Before he said it. Before anybody said it.

I knew that note. I’d heard it once before, at Orselle, inside the fold, when I’d read the gate from the inside and felt that long, cold, patient leaning from the far side. Somebody standing on the other side of a door, for years, reading it backward.

”The Lockwarden,” I said.

”Every door in Kethra used to belong to him,” said Loki quietly. ”Iselle said. A little.”

”Can you read it?” said my father. ”The fountain. The way you read the gate at Orselle.”

”Not from here.”

”Then go and stand in it,” said my father. ”Please.”

* * *

The fountain on the old parade ground at Concordia was full of clear water and dead leaves and seven paper lanterns, floating, sodden, that had fallen from the line after the black went out of it.

I took my boots off and stepped over the rim and stood in it. Up to my shins. Cold.

The students had been kept off the parade ground since the festival. Captain Hesk’s guards stood at the gates. The grass was still frozen in a great white ring where Carol had landed, and there were scorch marks in it like black stars where my father’s lightning had slid off the chain, and the east range wall had a crack in it from top to bottom where Thor’s hammer had gone in. Somebody had already started a list of repairs. I could see it pinned to the east range door, in the college steward’s hand. Item: the wall.

I stood in the fountain and asked the water: May I?

It said yes. Water nearly always does. It’s used to things passing through it.

And I read the door.

* * *

At Orselle, it had been like reading the creases in an old book. Faint. Layered. A leaning from the far side, cold and patient, and that was all. I couldn’t have told you who was leaning, or where, or why.

This was different.

I don’t know whether it was because the door had been open so recently, only two nights ago. Or because it had been opened so wide, wide enough to carry a god through. Or because of what my father had said on the deck of the Heron, about the dam breaking and the river finding out how big it could be.

I think it was that. I think it was me.

Because I didn’t just feel the crease the door had left in the water. I felt through it. All the way. Down through the clear water of the fountain, and through the place where the black had been, and along the long dark channel the door had made under the sea, the way you’d follow a rope down a well with your hands. Mile after mile after mile, under the whole of the western sea, faster than any fold I’ve ever made.

And at the other end, a room.

* * *

Stone. Very old. Very cold. Underground; I could feel the weight of a great deal of building above it, pressing down. A round room with no windows, and a round basin of black water in the middle of the floor, exactly the size of the fountain at Concordia. Its twin. The other end of the door.

And standing beside the basin, with one bare foot in the black water, a man.

Tall. Gray. Barefoot. With one small link of black iron chain around his left wrist.

I couldn’t see his face. You don’t see faces, reading a door; you feel the shape of what’s been there, the way you feel the warmth left in a chair. But I felt him. I felt the shape of him standing in that dark round room two nights ago, holding the door open across the whole width of the sea, with his foot in the water and his hand on the rim of the basin. Holding it open the way you hold a door for a stranger in the rain. Because you’ve been told to. Because it’s your work. And because the stranger’s going to come through whether you hold it or not.

And not wanting to.

That was the thing I hadn’t been able to feel at Orselle. I could feel it now. All through the crease he’d left in the door, like a grain in wood. He hadn’t wanted to. Not for one moment of it. Every second he’d stood there holding that door open, he’d been wishing he wasn’t.

* * *

And then, at the end, something else.

I felt it like a thumbprint pressed into wax. The very last thing in the door, on the far side, before it closed.

When Carol stood on the frozen grass of the parade ground and pulled the dead links off her ankles and said You may not have me. You may not, the Lockwarden heard it. Through the door. All the way across the sea.

And he let go.

Not because the chain was broken. He could have held the door open longer. A minute. An hour. Long enough for the Hushed still standing to carry somebody else through it, or for the stooped man to get back down the steps with Iselle. Long enough for anything.

He didn’t. The moment she said it, he took his foot out of the water and his hand off the rim, and the door closed itself behind her words like a hole in wet sand when the tide comes over it.

And what I felt pressed into the very last of it, like a thumbprint, was relief.

He was glad.

* * *

I stood in the fountain in the cold water up to my shins for a long time after that, with my eyes shut.

I knew the shape of that room now. All of it. Every stone. The curve of the walls, the weight of the building above, the black basin in the middle of the floor. I could have folded there. Right then. In a breath. Straight into the room beneath the golden city with every god I’ve ever borrowed in my hands.

I knew it the way you know you could step off a wall.

And I thought about my father on the deck of the Heron, saying you’ll go as the angriest. And about the seven from Shearwater, and the thirty-four. And about the man with his foot in the black water, holding a door he didn’t want to hold, and letting go the moment he could.

I didn’t fold.

I opened my eyes and stepped out of the fountain and sat down on the rim of it, and put my boots back on.

But I kept the shape. I want to be honest about that. I kept it, the way Carol and I keep everything. And it’s still there.

* * *

When I got back to the lower hall, Bram Halloran was there.

He’d come through the Westmere arch at noon with a roll of charts under his arm, the way he’d said he would. The first lesson. And Edric Vale had come with him, in his battered hat, carrying his bucket, because, he said, he’d never been to Greykeep in his life and he was seventy-one, and it was time.

”And because I want to see him,” said Edric. ”The one from the steps. Bram says Kip described his face to Tamar. Crooked nose. Gray stubble.” He looked at me from under the hat. ”There’s something about it I want to see for myself.”

So we took them through to Concordia. My father came too. And Kip, who was still sitting outside the last cell when we got there, on a stool someone had brought him, with a cup of tea gone cold at his feet.

The stooped man was where he’d been. Sitting on the floor against the wall, with his mask in his lap, crying without any sound.

Edric stood at the bars and looked at him for a very long time.

And then Edric took his hat off.

* * *

”Abel,” he said. ”Abel Sennet.”

The man on the floor went still.

”Of Shearwater,” said Edric. His voice had gone strange. ”You had the blue boat. The one with the eye painted on the bow. You mended nets on the shingle with your boy. Every morning. I used to see you from the road when I rode up the coast.” He gripped the bars. ”You were taken. The first winter. With the forty-one.”

The man on the floor lifted his head.

And looked at Edric. Properly. For the first time, I think, since he’d taken his mask off. His eyes went over Edric’s face, the white hair and the brown skin and the battered hat in his hands, and something happened in his face. Something came up into it from very far down, the way the black had gone out of the water in the fountain. Slowly. All at once.

”We thought you were one of the seven,” said Edric. ”The ones who didn’t come home. Your boy came home. Davy. He told us you’d died on the ship. In the hold. The second winter.” His hands were white on the bars. ”He’s been saying your name every year since. On the day. On the shingle.”

Abel Sennet put both his hands over his face.

* * *

My father had gone very white.

He came and stood beside Edric at the bars. He didn’t say anything for a long time. Then he did something I’ve seen him do maybe three times in my life. He got down on the floor. On the cold stone floor of the cell passage, on his knees, and then sitting, with his back against the bars of the cell, so that his head was level with Abel Sennet’s, on the other side of them.

”Abel,” he said. ”My name is Uriah Grey.”

The man didn’t take his hands away from his face.

”I was on the wall,” said my father. ”The morning after. At Westmere. I was going to come after you, as the storm, and sink the ships. And I didn’t. I counted to a thousand, and I didn’t come.” He was quiet a moment. ”Thirty-four came home. I’ve carried seven for twenty years. I thought you were one of the seven.” His voice went very low. ”I’m sorry. I’m so sorry I didn’t come.”

Abel Sennet sat with his hands over his face for a long time.

Then, very slowly, he took them away. And looked at my father, sitting on the floor on the other side of the bars. And his lips moved.

No sound came out. They can’t. He’d sworn it away years ago, in the Temple of Oaths, in front of the first link on its cushion.

But I could read it. We all could. His lips made one word, very carefully, the way you’d shape a word in a language you’d almost forgotten.

Davy?

* * *

”He’s alive,” said my father. ”He has a boat at Shearwater. Blue, with an eye on the bow. He mends nets on the shingle every morning. He has two girls. The older one’s nine.”

Abel Sennet’s face crumpled.

My father reached his hand through the bars. Not to take anything. Not to hold him. Just there, palm up, on the floor between them, the way Rysa taught us. The way Loki crouched for Iselle in the map room.

”Would you like to see him?” said my father. ”You don’t have to. You can say no.”

Abel Sennet looked at the open hand on the floor for a long time.

Then he nodded.

Once. Very small. The first thing anybody had seen any of the Hushed choose to do since the masks came out of the dark on the second night.

He nodded. And then he put his hand, the one with the broken chain still wound around it, on the floor beside my father’s. Not touching. Just beside it.

Kip, on his stool, made a sound and put his face in his hands.

* * *

Mary wrote it that evening.

The chain read by Eleanor and Wynn. Wynn read it first. Every link that went around Carol says: What is held is carried. What is carried is carried whole. What is carried whole arrives. Not to kill her. To carry her. Whole. And keep her.

The chain that went around Iselle says: What is held is closed. What is closed is ended.

Davren heard a second note in the anchors. Not Kessavel’s. Garrick stood in the fountain and read the door to the other end. A round room under the golden city. The Lockwarden held it open. He did not want to. When Carol said You may not, he let go. He was glad.

Garrick knows the shape of that room. He did not fold.

The man from the steps is Abel Sennet, of Shearwater. Taken the first winter. Thought to be one of the seven. His son Davy came home.

He said Davy’s name. Without a voice.

Uriah asked if he would like to see him. He nodded.

And under that, in my father’s hand, very small, as if he’d been afraid to write it any bigger:

Six.
