The Greykeep Chronicles

She’d seen him first. Long before any of us.

I didn’t know that until the next morning, when she could talk again, and told Roderic, and Roderic told me. Iselle had seen the two Hushed slip out through the east range arch the moment the anchor came up out of the grass. While the rest of us were watching Seraphina and the chain and the fountain, Iselle had been watching the arch. Because she grew up in a palace where the Hushed stood outside doors at night, and she knew something none of the rest of us did.

They don’t run away. Not ever. They haven’t got anything left to be afraid with.

If a Hushed goes out through an arch in the middle of a fight, it’s because the oath has told him to go somewhere else.

She’d tried to tell Roderic. In the ring, with the chain splitting and the frost going out across the grass and Carol landing like Thor. She’d pulled at his sleeve and said the arch, Rod, the arch, and he’d thought she was frightened, and put both arms around her to keep her safe.

So she’d pulled out of them.

And by then it was nearly too late.

* * *

I saw her run.

Across the frozen parade ground. Past the cages of my father’s lightning, with the twenty white masks standing very still inside them. Past Thor, turning her hammer over in her hands. Past Seraphina, with her fingertips still glowing. In her festival dress and her blue scarf, with her mask gone and her hair coming down and her right hand open, flying out ahead of her as if she were reaching for something she could already see.

And I looked where she was looking.

The east range steps. Caitlin sitting on the top one with her blue book on her knees, writing. Kip beside her. Alone. And the stooped man coming up the steps out of the dark of the arch, two at a time, fast, his white mask catching the last of the blue light, his left shoulder lower than his right.

He had his chain unwound from his fist. Swinging it.

* * *

I reached for a fold.

It opened. Of course it did; the ring was gone. And I threw myself through it toward the steps.

And came out on the wrong side of the fountain.

I don’t know why. I’ve thought about it a hundred times since. I think it was the frost, or the scorch marks, or the last of the iron still lying in pieces on the grass, still cold, still with a little of its locking in it. I think the place was still bruised where the ring had been, and my fold went through it like a foot through a rotten stair. I came out thirty paces from where I’d meant to, facing the wrong way, and had to turn around, and by the time I’d turned around, it had already happened.

That’s what too late means. It means a fold that comes out thirty paces wrong.

* * *

Caitlin told me the rest. She wrote it down that same night, sitting in the infirmary at Concordia, in her blue book, because she said if she didn’t write it down at once, she’d start remembering it wrong, and she couldn’t bear to remember it wrong.

I’ve copied it out here exactly as she wrote it. She said I could.

* * *

12:06. I was writing down the lightning cages. Twenty. Kip was counting them for me because my hands were shaking and I kept losing my place.

Kip’s wrist went cold. He said so. He said ”Caitlin.” Just my name. And I looked up.

He was on the steps. The one with the low shoulder. Coming up. He had his chain off his hand. He was looking at Kip.

Not at me. At Kip.

I didn’t understand. And then I did. Kip unswore the oath at Orselle. With his own hand. Six days. Three thousand names. Kip is the only person in the whole world who ever took back something Kessavel’s hand laid down. And this was the man who gave him the bottle.

I stood up and put Kip behind me.

I don’t know why. I can’t fight. I’ve never hit anyone. I had a pencil. I just stood up and put him behind me, because he’d fished my list out of the fountain, and he’d danced with me for three dances, and I’d counted for him, and I wasn’t going to let anybody touch him.

The man swung the chain.

Iselle was there.

I didn’t see her come. She was just there. In front of me. Between me and the chain. With her back to him and her face to me and both her arms around me, the way you’d put your arms around somebody to keep them from falling.

The chain hit her.

* * *

It hit her across the back. The right shoulder. And then it wrapped. All the way around. Over her shoulder and under her arm and across her back again, like a snake going around a branch. I heard it. It made a sound like a bell in a cellar.

She didn’t scream. She made a sound like the air going out of her. Very small. Right against my ear.

And then she said, very clearly, still holding me:

”My name is Iselle. Daughter of Saba, who weaves.”

I didn’t understand why she said it. I understand now.

* * *

Kip went past me.

I didn’t know Kip could move that fast. He’s always so careful. He came out from behind me and went around Iselle and put both his hands on the man’s wrist. The wrist with the chain. His own branded wrist and the man’s chained one, together.

I heard Kip say, ”No.”

Just that. Like he was telling a dog to get off a bed. Not loudly.

”No. I’m not doing it anymore. And neither are you.”

And the man stopped.

I don’t know why. They don’t feel anything. Iselle said so. But he stopped, with Kip holding his wrist, and his white mask turned and looked at Kip, and for a moment neither of them moved at all.

And then Thor’s hammer came across the whole parade ground and hit the chain where it ran between his hand and Iselle’s shoulder, and broke it, and kept going, and went into the east range wall, and the wall cracked from top to bottom.

Thor came running behind it. Garrick came out of a fold beside me. Uriah’s lightning came down around the man and made a cage.

Iselle fell down.

I caught her.

12:07.

* * *

That’s what Caitlin wrote. One minute. The whole thing took one minute.

I was there for the end of it. I came out of my second fold on the steps beside Caitlin, the right way this time, just as Iselle’s knees went. And Caitlin caught her, and went down with her onto the top step, with Iselle across her lap and Caitlin’s blue book skidding away down the steps and her pencil gone.

And Roderic came.

I’ve never seen anybody run the way Roderic ran across that parade ground. He doesn’t fold. He doesn’t fly. He’s Adriana’s son, and he’s just a man, and I think he crossed two hundred paces of frozen grass in less time than it took me to fold thirty. He came up the steps three at a time and went down on his knees beside her.

He didn’t touch her. I saw him stop himself.

”Iselle,” he said. ”Iselle. Can I...”

Her eyes were open. She looked up at him. Her lips moved.

”Yes,” she said.

So he took her hand.

* * *

It was her right hand.

And it was closed.

Not the way it closes when she’s frightened, and she opens it again on purpose. Closed like a stone. Clenched so tight the knuckles had gone white, and the nails had cut into the palm, and a little blood was coming out between her fingers.

And she couldn’t open it.

I watched her try. Lying across Caitlin’s lap on the top of the east range steps, with the broken chain still wound around her shoulder, cold and dark, I watched Iselle look down at her own fist and try to open it, the way she does a dozen times a day, on purpose, one finger at a time, the way she’s been practicing since the summer.

Nothing moved.

”It won’t,” she said. Very small. Like a child. ”Rod. It won’t open.”

* * *

Ignatius came. And my mother. And Carol, white-faced, with her skinned hand.

Ignatius knelt down on Iselle’s other side and asked her, the way he’d asked Carol, palms up. She said yes. He looked at the chain wound over her shoulder and under her arm.

”Garrick,” he said. ”Get it off her. Gently. Don’t let it touch her skin anywhere it isn’t already.”

I folded it off. A small fold, very careful, around every link at once, so that the whole broken length of iron simply stopped being on her and was lying on the step beside her instead. It was the most careful fold I’ve ever made. I made it with my eyes shut.

And underneath where the chain had been, on her shoulder and across her back, through the torn silk of her festival dress, there was a mark.

Not like Carol’s. Not a coin of gray. A line. Long and dark, the shape of every link, like the print a chain leaves in snow. All the way around, where it had wrapped.

And at the end of it, over her heart, where the last link had pressed, a closed hand.

It wasn’t gray, like the one on Carol’s wrist had been. It was black.

* * *

”It was trying to lock her name,” said Ignatius quietly. ”Like Carol’s. Only Carol’s never finished.” He looked at the black fist over Iselle’s heart. ”This one nearly did.”

”Nearly,” said my mother.

”Nearly.” Ignatius looked up at Caitlin. ”What did she say? When it hit her. Did she say anything?”

Caitlin’s face crumpled.

”Her name,” she said. ”She said her name. My name is Iselle. Daughter of Saba, who weaves. Right in my ear. While it was still wrapping.”

Ignatius closed his eyes.

”Then she held it,” he said. ”That’s why it’s only nearly. She said her own name while it was trying to take it, and she held on.” He opened his eyes again and looked down at Iselle, and his voice did something I’d never heard it do. ”She held on to her own name with a chain around her heart.”

* * *

Ignatius healed what he could.

He put his hand over the long dark line across her back and shoulder, the print of every link, and his fire came, gold and slow. And the line faded. Link by link. The way Carol’s scrape had faded. Until there was only Iselle’s skin, pale and cold, and the torn silk.

Then he put his hand over the black fist above her heart.

And nothing happened.

He held it there for a long time. I watched his face. I watched it go from calm, to careful, to something I’d never seen on Ignatius’s face in my life, which was not knowing what to do.

He took his hand away.

”I can’t,” he said. ”Not this. Not here.” He looked at my mother. ”It’s not a burn. It’s not a wound. It’s a lock. It’s half-shut on something, and if I pull at it, I don’t know which half comes away.”

My mother looked at it for a long time. Evelyn has been a healer for twenty-five years. She’s sat at more sickbeds than anyone alive except Aurelia.

”No,” she said quietly. ”Don’t pull. Not tonight.” She put her hand very gently on Iselle’s forehead. ”Tonight we keep her warm, and we keep her still, and we keep saying her name. And in the morning, we ask Aurelia.”

* * *

The stooped man stood in his cage of lightning at the top of the steps, very still, with his white mask turned toward Iselle.

My father went and stood in front of him.

He didn’t say anything for a long time. Then he said, ”May I take off your mask?”

Nothing. They don’t speak. Iselle said so.

My father waited anyway. Long enough for an answer, if one had been going to come. Then he nodded.

”Then it stays on,” he said. ”You can keep your face. Nobody here is going to take anything from you that you don’t give.” He looked at the man’s chained hand, empty now, the broken end of the chain hanging from it. ”That’s the difference. I’d like you to know there’s a difference. Even if you can’t feel it.”

The white mask looked at him.

And then, very slowly, the man’s left hand, the one without the chain, came up. And took hold of the bottom edge of the mask. And lifted it.

* * *

Underneath, he was just a man.

I don’t know what I’d expected. Something terrible. Something empty. He was a man of about fifty, with a weathered brown face and gray stubble and a broken nose that had healed crooked a long time ago. A sailor’s face. Lines at the corners of his eyes from squinting at the sun on the water.

And he was crying.

Not making any sound. He couldn’t. But the tears were running down his face, steadily, the way they do when you’ve been crying for a long time without knowing it, and he didn’t lift a hand to wipe them.

Kip came and stood beside my father and looked at him.

”That’s him,” said Kip quietly. ”That’s his face. Off the ship. When he didn’t wear the mask.” He looked at the tears. ”I didn’t know they could.”

”Neither did they, I think,” said my father.

* * *

Loki searched his coat.

He asked first. He stood in front of the cage and said, ”I’m going to look in your coat. If you don’t want me to, move your hand. Any way at all. I’ll see it.” And the man stood perfectly still, with the tears running, and didn’t move. So Loki reached through the bars of lightning, which let him, because my father let them, and put his hand into the inside pocket of the man’s sailor’s coat.

He took out a black page. Folded small. Cold.

He unfolded it under the blue light of the last lamps on the east range steps, and read it, and went completely white.

He didn’t say anything. He just handed it to my father.

My father read it. Then he handed it to me.

It was in Malachar’s hand. Small, heavy, pressed, the hand that means its words to go all the way through the paper. Two lines.

The porter’s hand that unswore. The sister who lies.

Close both.

* * *

”Lies,” said Loki. Very quietly. ”Not lied. Lies. Now. Every night.”

Nobody said anything.

”He knew,” said Loki. ”The whole time. Every line. The north tower. She does not sleep well. He read every one of them and wrote back good, and soon, and I knew you would, and he knew every single word of it was ours.” He put his hand over his eyes. ”I knew you would. He wasn’t saying he trusted her. He was telling her. He was telling me.”

”Loki,” said my father.

”I built it.” Loki took his hand away. His face was terrible. ”I sat in the map room and built it, line by line, carpentry, and I was so pleased with myself. A lie made of true things. And he let me. He let us write it every night for a week, so she’d keep thinking she was safe. So she’d come to the festival. So she’d be standing on the steps with nobody near her when...” He stopped. ”She asked me Friend. And I said yes. And I built the thing that put her on those steps.”

* * *

My father put his hand on Loki’s shoulder.

”No,” he said. ”He put her on those steps. You don’t get to have that. It isn’t yours.” He looked at the page. ”And she didn’t stand on them. She ran to them. To Caitlin. Because she saw the arch when none of us did, and tried to tell us, and we didn’t listen.” He looked at Roderic, kneeling on the top step with Iselle’s closed fist held in both his hands. ”That’s hers. Not his. Not yours. Hers.”

Loki didn’t answer.

But he went and sat down on the step below Iselle, very close, where she could see him if she turned her head. And he stayed there.

* * *

They carried her to the palace infirmary at a quarter to one. Io’s infirmary, at the top of the hill, with the tall windows. Roderic carried her. Nobody asked him not to.

She was awake. Not really. The way you’re awake with a fever. She kept saying her name, very softly, every few breaths, the way my mother had said they should. Iselle. Daughter of Saba. Roderic said it with her when she forgot.

Her right hand stayed closed.

Halfway up the hill, I heard her say, very small, against his coat: ”It won’t open, Rod.”

”I know,” said Roderic. ”That’s all right. I’ve got it.”

He was holding it. Her fist. In his free hand, against his chest, as he carried her.

”I’ll hold it shut for you,” he said. ”Until it opens. As long as it takes. You don’t have to do anything. I’ve got it.”

* * *

Mary wrote it in the infirmary, at two in the morning, in a hard chair by the door. Melody had brought her the black book from the edge of the parade ground. Mary hadn’t asked her to. Melody just knew.

The third night. The ring was broken. Carol climbed out of it with her own hands. Seraphina cut the chain. Everyone held it. Nobody was taken.

Iselle saw two go out through the east range arch. She tried to tell us. We did not listen in time.

The man who gave Kip the bottle went for Kip. Caitlin put Kip behind her. Iselle put herself in front of Caitlin. The chain took her across the back and the heart. She said her own name while it was trying to take it, and held on.

Kip held his wrist and said No. He stopped.

He took his own mask off. He is crying.

The page in his coat: The porter’s hand that unswore. The sister who lies. Close both.

He knew. All week.

Iselle’s right hand will not open. Roderic is holding it.

And under that, much later, near dawn, in Caitlin’s hand, because she’d come and sat on the floor by Mary’s chair, and asked for the pen, and Mary had given it to her:

She was there before I knew I needed her. I didn’t even see her come.

Thank you.
