The Greykeep Chronicles

I felt it before I saw it.

Not with my eyes. In the middle. Carol’s door was open, the way she’d asked me to keep mine, and one moment the whole of her was there on the other side of it, warm and steady and a little frightened and very, very determined, the way she’d been since the little kitchen.

And the next moment, it was as if somebody had put a hand over her mouth.

Not shut the door. Nobody shut anything. The door was still open. But everything on the other side of it went muffled, and far off, and small, like a voice heard through a wall in a house where somebody’s put a pillow over the speaker’s face. I could still feel her. I could feel that she was there. But I couldn’t feel her reach.

I’d never felt that before. Not when the holding came down the Ilvane for her. Not when she broke her wrist on the roof. Not ever.

I started running before I knew I was going to.

* * *

This is what everybody else saw. I’ve put it together since, from Caitlin’s blue book and Mary’s black one and Loki and Thor and my father and the students who wrote it down afterward for the college archive, because the Senior Master asked them to.

Carol stood on the rim of the fountain in a plain white mask and Ignatius’s old green coat, with Master Ashby’s silver knife in her right hand, reaching up with her left for the first lantern line.

And the blue lamps went out.

Not all of them. Only the ones in a ring. A great circle of them, all the way around the middle of the parade ground, the lamps nearest to where the iron lay under the grass. They didn’t flicker. They just stopped, as if a hand had closed over each one. And the paper lanterns they hung in went dark, and the circle of dark lanterns hung over the parade ground like a crown made of nothing.

And everybody inside that circle went very cold.

* * *

The Hushed moved.

All thirty-three. At the same moment, without a sound, the way they’d turned the night before, like birds. Eleven of them went to the ring. Straight to it, each one to his own place, through the students as if the students weren’t there, and knelt down on the grass where the iron was, and laid the short lengths of chain from their right hands down flat on the turf.

And the chains went into the ground.

Not fell. Went. Like water poured on dry earth. They ran down into the grass and were gone, and the ground where they’d been heaved, once, all the way around the ring, the way a sleeper heaves when something wakes him.

And then the chain came up.

* * *

Caitlin wrote it down. Her hand doesn’t shake when she writes. It’s the only thing about her that never does.

11:52. The chain came up out of the ground in a ring. One chain, not eleven. Black. Links as big as my hand. Rising out of the grass all the way around at once, from every link to the next, like a fence growing. Waist-high. Then shoulder-high. Then it stopped rising and started closing.

It’s moving in. Toward the fountain. Like a noose being pulled.

Carol’s still on the rim.

* * *

My father struck it.

He didn’t wait. He didn’t count. He’d held the sky still all night, clear and empty from one horizon to the other, and the moment the chain came out of the ground, he opened his hand at his side and brought it all down. Out of a clear sky. The biggest bolt I’ve ever seen him throw, white-gold and so loud the old barracks wall shook under my feet and four hundred paper lanterns jumped on their lines.

It hit the ring.

And it ran off it.

Like water off glass. Like rain off a duck’s back. The lightning hit the black chain and spread out over it in a great white sheet and slid off on every side and went into the ground outside the ring, and scorched a hundred little black stars into the grass, and was gone.

Inside the ring, nothing. Not a spark. Not a hair lifted on anybody’s arm.

What stands within is held. What is held does not pass.

Nothing passes. Not out. And not in.

* * *

Thor threw her hammer.

I saw that. I was running past her when she did it. She ripped off the brown country cloak and threw it on the grass and brought her arm back and threw, the way I’ve seen her throw it at storm-giants and sea-walls and once, at Loki’s birthday, at the moon, and it went across the parade ground like a falling star, roaring.

It hit the chain.

And it stopped.

Dead. In the air. A hand’s width from the black links. The way a fly stops when it hits a window. And then it fell. Straight down. Onto the grass outside the ring, and lay there.

Thor stood with her arm still out.

”It’s never done that,” she said. Not to anybody. Just out loud. Very quietly, for Thor. ”Not once. Not in a thousand years.”

* * *

I reached for a fold.

I knew it wouldn’t open. I’d tried it that afternoon. I did it anyway, because there was nothing else in me but reach, and a fold is how I reach. And the fold started, and hit the bricked-up place, and folded back on itself with that tinfoil bite, so hard this time that I stumbled and nearly went down.

I couldn’t get in.

My father couldn’t get in. Thor’s hammer couldn’t get in.

And through the middle, muffled, small, very far away though she was only fifty paces from me, I could feel my sister standing on the rim of a fountain in the middle of a closing ring of black iron, reaching for her lightning.

And finding nothing there.

* * *

That’s what the ring did. That’s what the eleven had been laying down under the grass for two nights.

It didn’t just stop things passing. It locked whatever was inside it. Her lightning. Her frost. Aurelia’s compassion in her hands. Her little lights. The holding she took from Malachar himself in the cold of the Ilvane. Every single thing she has ever been lent and kept, every god in every room she’s ever stood in.

Locked. Behind a door she couldn’t open.

For the first time in her whole life, my sister was just a woman. A young woman of twenty-three in a borrowed coat and a paper mask, standing on the rim of a fountain with a silver knife, while a fence of black iron closed in on her across the grass.

* * *

The other twenty-two Hushed had already moved.

Eleven to hold the chain. And eleven to hold the people who come to help her. Loki had said it. He hadn’t been quite right. There were twenty-two to hold us.

They came out of the crowd all at once, wherever they’d been standing, and put themselves in our way. Not fighting. Not yet. Just standing. Between my father and the ring. Between Seraphina and the ring. Between Ignatius and the ring, who had started running at the same moment I had, from the other side, and who stopped, because a white mask with no mouth had stepped in front of him with a chain hanging from its fist and simply stood there.

And the students were screaming.

Four hundred of them, masked, in the blue dark, under the lanterns. Some running. Some frozen. Some, the brave stupid ones, trying to get in to the ring to help, and finding they could push through the black chain the way you’d push through a curtain, on their own two feet, and stumbling inside, and then not knowing what to do. My mother was in the middle of them with her arms out, herding the little ones away from the ring toward the east range steps. Adriana had Mirelle in one arm and Faelan by the hand. Grandpa was standing in front of the college gate with Fenrir, both of them, an old man in his good waistcoat and a wolf the size of a pony, and nobody went past them.

* * *

And then I heard Iselle.

She was screaming. Not in fear. A word. Over and over, across the whole parade ground, over all the other noise, in a voice I’d never heard her use, a voice that went straight through every mask and every lantern.

”Walk! Walk in! On your feet! WALK!”

I stopped.

She was standing on the bench at four, with Roderic holding her up by the waist so she wouldn’t fall off it. She’d torn off her blue paper mask. Her right hand was out, open, pointing at the ring.

”Nothing passes,” she screamed. ”Nothing passes that doesn’t walk! It’s a door for gods! Not for feet! WALK IN!”

And I understood.

The students. The brave stupid ones. They’d gone through the black chain like a curtain. On their own two feet. Because they weren’t gods, and they weren’t lightning, and they weren’t hammers, and they weren’t folds. They were just people, walking.

Nothing in that ring can go anywhere it doesn’t walk on its own two feet.

I didn’t fold. I didn’t reach for anything. I put my head down, and I ran.

* * *

Going through the chain was like walking into a cellar in summer.

Cold. Close. A smell like wet iron and old stone. For one step, the black links were all around me, as high as my shoulders, and I felt them drag at me, the way deep water drags at your clothes.

And then I was through. Inside. On the blue grass, in the cold, in the ring.

And everything I’d ever been lent went quiet.

I don’t know how else to say it. All my life, I’ve carried them. The fold. My father’s storm. Seraphina’s flame when she’s near. Damar’s stone-hearing. Aelune’s little bit of seeing. Elenos’s way with people. Every god in every room. They sit in me the way your own heartbeat sits in you; you don’t hear it, but you’d know at once if it stopped.

It stopped.

Not gone. Locked. Like a house where somebody’s gone around in the night and turned the key in every door. I could feel them all in there, behind the doors. I just couldn’t open a single one.

I was a man. Just a man. Twenty-three years old, in a bad blue paper mask, on an old parade ground, with my sister fifty paces away on the rim of a fountain and a fence of black iron closing in on her.

So I did what men do. I ran.

* * *

I wasn’t the only one.

Ignatius came through the chain behind me, on the far side, and I felt him stagger, the way I had, when his fire went quiet. And then he ran too.

Roderic came through. He’d put Iselle down off the bench and told her to stay, and she hadn’t, and she came through behind him with her right hand open.

Thor came through. She left her hammer lying on the grass outside, where it had fallen, and walked through the black chain with her bare hands in fists, and her braid stopped crackling the moment she was inside, and she didn’t seem to notice at all.

And my father.

He walked. He didn’t run. He walked through the chain like a man walking through a door into his own kitchen, and the sky above the parade ground, which had been his all night, went loose and ordinary the moment he was inside, and the stars came back out, and a little breeze started in the lantern lines. He didn’t look up at it. He just kept walking toward the fountain.

And the Hushed turned to meet us.

* * *

There were eleven of them at the ring, kneeling, holding the chain with their hands flat on the grass, and they didn’t move. They couldn’t, I think. They were the chain, now, the way the anchors were the chain.

But the other twenty-two had come in with us. On their feet, the way we had. And they put themselves between us and the fountain.

They didn’t fight the way people fight. They didn’t shout, or swear, or show their teeth. They just stood in front of you, very still, with those smooth white faces and no mouths, and when you tried to go around them, they were in front of you again. And when you tried to go through them, they put out their hands, the hands with the short chains wound around them, and held you.

Just held. They didn’t hit. They didn’t need to. A Hushed hand on your arm is like a shackle. Cold, and heavy, and certain, and when it closes, it doesn’t open again.

One of them had my father by both arms. Two had Thor. I saw her lift one clean off his feet and throw him ten paces across the grass, which should have been impossible without her strength, and wasn’t, because it turns out Thor is very strong even when she isn’t a god, and then the other one had her around the waist and wouldn’t let go.

And one stepped in front of me.

Shorter than the others. A little stooped. His left shoulder lower than his right.

* * *

I’d never hit anybody.

I want that written down. In twenty-three years. I’ve thrown lightning at storm-giants and frozen a fog-god solid and folded a whole herd of unicorns across Avarra in one breath. I’ve never once hit a man with my hand.

I hit him.

It hurt. My hand, I mean. I don’t think it hurt him at all. They don’t feel anything. Iselle said so. He just rocked back a step, and his white mask turned toward me with its two dark eyeholes, and he put out his hand, the one with the chain on it, and took hold of my wrist.

Cold. So cold it burned.

I couldn’t get free. I’m not as strong as Thor. Nobody is, even with her divinity locked away behind a door. I pulled, and he held, and his face didn’t change, because he hadn’t got one.

And over his shoulder, I saw the fountain.

* * *

The water had gone black.

Not dark. Black. The way the bottle was black, the one Kip used to wipe the plates with. Still and flat and shining, like a mirror made of ink. And as I watched, it started to go down. Not draining. Opening. The middle of the basin sinking away, deeper and deeper, the black water turning slowly around the edge of it, like water going down a well with no bottom.

A door.

Iselle had said it. It’s a door for gods. Not a way in. A way through. Somewhere. Wherever the Hushed had come from, wherever the chain went, wherever the cold black bottle had been filled. Kethra. The golden city. The palace with the painted ceilings and no windows.

And the chain had reached Carol.

* * *

It came up over the rim of the fountain like a snake. Black links as big as my hand, closing in from all around the ring at once, until there was no ring left, only one great loop of iron drawing tight around the fountain basin. And it reached her ankles, and wound up around them. And her waist. And her left wrist, the one she’d broken on the roof when she was twelve.

And it started to pull.

Down. Toward the black water. Toward the well in the middle of the fountain that had no bottom.

Carol didn’t fall.

She’d had her left hand up, reaching for the first lantern line, when the iron woke. And she’d caught it. The line. The long cord strung across the whole parade ground, with the first fifty lanterns hanging from it, dark now inside the ring and still glowing blue outside it.

She was holding it with both hands. The silver knife was gone, dropped somewhere in the black water. Her feet were braced on the fountain rim. And the chain was pulling her down, and the line was holding her up, and every one of those fifty paper lanterns was jerking on the cord above her like birds trying to get away.

* * *

Somebody else was holding the line.

I couldn’t believe it, and then I could. Master Ashby. In his gold paper mask, with his good robe torn at the shoulder. He’d dropped the cushion when the iron woke. He’d run, the students said afterward. Five steps. Then he’d stopped, and turned around, and come back. And now he was standing on the fountain rim beside my sister with both his old soft scholar’s hands wrapped around the lantern line above hers, pulling against the chain with everything he had, and his gold mask had slipped, and his face under it was gray and wet and terrified.

”I didn’t know,” he was saying. Over and over. To nobody. To her. ”I didn’t know. They said it was an honor. They said she’d danced so beautifully. They said it was an honor.”

* * *

The stooped man had my wrist.

I couldn’t break his grip. I couldn’t fold. I couldn’t borrow. I couldn’t do anything at all but stand there and watch the line strain and the lanterns jerk and the chain wind higher around my sister and the black water turn slowly in the bottom of the fountain.

And through the middle, muffled, so faint it was barely there at all, like a voice through three walls, I heard her.

Garrick.

I’m here.

I can’t reach anything. It’s all locked. I can’t...

I know. I can’t either. Nobody can. Not inside.

A pause. The line jerked. One of the lanterns tore free above her and fell, dark, into the black water, and didn’t float, and was gone.

Then I’ll do it the other way, said Carol.

What other way?

And through three walls and a pillow and a door that wouldn’t open, I felt my sister do something I’d never once felt her do in her whole life. Not with lightning. Not with frost. Not with anything she’d ever been lent.

She got angry. Just angry. The plain, ordinary, human kind.

He took everything I’ve been given, she said. He forgot about everything I am.

And Carol Grey let go of the lantern line with her right hand, and made it into a fist.
