The Greykeep Chronicles

She told me what they’d said. Not that morning. Later. On the east wall, in the afternoon, with the sun going down over the river and her chin on her knees.

”I asked them in the little kitchen,” she said. ”At four in the morning. They were still on the bench by the fire, the two of them, in their dressing gowns. I sat down on the floor in front of them, the way we used to when we were small and wanted a story. And I said, He told me to ask you what you’d want for me. So I’m asking.”

”What did they say?”

”They looked at each other first,” said Carol. ”Before either of them said anything. Just looked. For a long time. You know how they do.”

I knew.

”And then Mother said, We’d want you to be asked.” Carol was quiet for a moment. ”Every day. For the rest of your life. By people who’ll take no for an answer.”

* * *

”And Adriana said the rest,” said Carol.

She told it slowly, as if she wanted to get the words exactly right.

”She said, Being asked is how you know you’re loved and not owned. That’s all it is. It’s the whole difference. He offered you never being asked again. Do you know what that is, Carol? That’s the offer of a shelf.”

The river went by below us, gold in the low sun.

”And then she told me about the chapel,” said Carol. ”The bench. How they asked each other. How they were so frightened, both of them, the first time. How Mother asked her, on the bench, May I? before she put her hand in her hair, and Adriana said yes, and that’s how it started. And how they asked Father, together. And how he asked Adriana, properly, for herself and not for Lyradon. And then asked Mother whether she minded.” Carol smiled, a little. ”Adriana said, Twenty years, and we still ask. Every night. Every morning. Do you want the window open. Can I have the side by the wall. May I. It never stops. That’s how you know it’s still alive.”

”Still?” I said.

Carol looked at me sideways.

”Still,” she said.

* * *

”So that’s the word,” I said.

”That’s half of it,” said Carol.

She was quiet for a long time. Watching the river.

”The other half’s harder,” she said. ”The forty-one.”

I didn’t say anything.

”He said he’d open every hold,” said Carol. ”Every Hushed. Every held god. Every person taken off every coast for three hundred years. Abel Sennet, and all the Abel Sennets. Home.” Her hands closed on her knees. ”For me. Just me. Walking through a door.”

”I know.”

”Garrick, that’s everyone. That’s every forty-one there’s ever been. And all I have to do is walk.”

* * *

I thought about it for a long time before I answered. I wanted to get it right. I’d felt her turn it over all day, through the middle, the way you’d turn a stone over and over in your pocket.

”He’s had them for three hundred years,” I said at last.

Carol looked at me.

”Every hold he’s offering to open,” I said. ”He could have opened them any time. Any day. Any year. Abel Sennet’s been in a mask since Father’s first winter. The Hollow Choir’s been below decks since before anybody now alive was born. He could have sent every one of them home whenever he liked.” I looked at the river. ”He didn’t. He’s been keeping them. And now he’s put a price on them. And the price is you.”

Carol was very still.

”That’s not an offer,” I said. ”That’s a ransom. And if you pay it, he’ll have them and you. Because the day after you walk through his door, the holds will fill up again. They always do. He told us himself. Everything I hold.”

* * *

”Father said,” said Carol slowly, ”on the Heron. I want you to go to bring them home. Not to sink the ships with them inside.”

”Yes.”

”He didn’t say to trade yourself for them.”

”No.”

She was quiet for a long time.

”Then we go and get them,” she said. ”Not tonight. Not angry. Not alone. When we’re ready. When Bram’s taught you the harbors, and we know where every hold is, and we can walk in and open them ourselves.” She lifted her chin off her knees. ”I won’t buy them with me. I’m not his to spend. We’ll go and get them.”

”Together,” I said.

”Together,” said Carol. ”Not alone. Not ever. Not once.”

* * *

My father came home at a quarter to two in the morning.

Not by the fast way. I’d been watching the sky all evening, waiting for the white-gold crack and the thunder, and it didn’t come. Instead, at a quarter to two, the Castellan said, very quietly, in the lower hall where I was waiting with his boots in my hands:

”Uriah Grey. By the Concordia arch.” A pause. ”On foot.”

He came through it in his gray socks with the darned heel. Muddy to the ankle. With a bundle under one arm wrapped in cloth that smelled of wool and woodsmoke and river water.

He looked at me. At the boots in my hands.

”You kept them,” he said.

”You asked me to.”

He took them from me and didn’t put them on. He just held them.

”Saba?” I said.

”After,” said my father. ”I came for this first. The Castellan sent word by raven. Two in the morning.” He looked toward the cistern stair. ”Is she going down?”

”She’s going down.”

My father nodded.

”Then I’ll stand in the doorway,” he said. ”If she’ll have me.”

* * *

”Why on foot?” I said, on the cistern stair.

”Because I didn’t want to come over the castle tonight as thunder,” said my father. ”Not tonight. Not over her.” He looked down at his muddy socks. ”I came by the fast way as far as the Concordia gate square. Then I walked through.”

* * *

Carol said yes. Of course she did. She was standing at the bottom of the cistern stair in Ignatius’s old green coat, with the key on its string in her hand, when we came down, and she looked at our father in his muddy socks with his boots in his hand, and her face did something I can’t describe.

”You came back,” she said.

”I came back.”

”For this?”

”For this,” said my father. ”May I stand in the doorway?”

”Yes,” said Carol. ”Please.”

* * *

So we were all there again. All of us from the night before, and my father too.

Eleanor with her key. Loki against the wall. Mary on the bottom step with her candle on its tin dish. Ignatius. Seraphina, with her tea, and the white-gold already standing at the edges of her eyes. My mothers, in their dressing gowns, holding hands. And my father, between them, in his muddy socks, with one arm around each of them.

And Iselle.

She’d come down the cistern stair a little after the rest of us, in her coat and her blue scarf, with her right hand open at her side. Roderic was behind her. She stopped at the bottom of the stair and looked at Carol.

”May I?” she said. ”Stand here? I’d like to hear it.”

Carol looked at her for a long time.

”Yes,” she said. ”You most of all.”

* * *

Carol unlocked the door.

She walked in. To the end of the rows. To the six taffy links lying on the stone floor, one of them already going white with the flat cold frost.

She turned around and looked at me. And I went in, and stood behind her left shoulder, where I’ve always stood.

The frost spread.

”Carol,” said the voice.

Quiet. Patient. Warm. The voice of a man by a fire.

”You came down again. I’m glad.” A pause. ”And your father’s home. In his socks. Walked through the gate so he wouldn’t wake you with his weather.” The voice was almost fond. ”He’s a kind man, your father. I’ve always thought so.”

Carol didn’t move.

”I said one word would do,” said Malachar. ”I meant it. I don’t need speeches. I don’t need you to tell me why. Just the word.” The frost crept a little further across the floor, toward her bare feet. ”Have you an answer for me, Carol?”

* * *

Carol took a breath.

I felt it, through the middle. All the way down. The way you feel someone take a breath before they dive into cold water.

And then she said something I wasn’t expecting.

”My name is Carol Grey,” she said.

The frost stopped spreading.

”You’ve never said it,” said Carol. ”Not once. In the river, or the dream, or the fog, or the song, or here. You say Carol. You leave the Grey off. Every time.” Her voice was very steady. ”You do it to Iselle, too. You’ve never once written her name. Just little sister.” She looked down at the frosted link. ”Because a person with a whole name can say no. Can’t she.”

The voice didn’t answer.

”So I’m saying it for you,” said Carol. ”So you can hear it properly. Once. Before the word.” She lifted her chin. ”My name is Carol Grey. Daughter of Uriah and Evelyn. Sister of Garrick. Of Greykeep, where the doors are asked.”

The cold in the room went very deep. Deeper than it had ever been.

”Carol,” said the voice. Very softly.

”Carol Grey,” said Carol.

And then she gave him the word.

* * *

”No.”

* * *

It didn’t sound like much.

That’s the thing I want to put down, because I’ve read stories, as everybody has, where the hero says the great word at the great moment and the sky splits open and the mountains fall. It wasn’t like that.

It was just one word. Said quietly. In a cold cellar under a castle, at two in the morning, by a young woman in a borrowed coat with her bare feet on the stone.

No.

The way you’d say it to a second helping you didn’t want. The way you’d say it to a child asking for one more story when it’s long past bedtime. Plain. Kind, even. And absolutely, completely final.

* * *

The voice didn’t answer for a long time.

I followed it back. I couldn’t help it. Down through the frosted link, the way I had the first night, toward that deep dark patient sea on the other side of the world. And I felt it.

Not anger. I’d expected anger. There wasn’t any.

The sea had gone still. Stiller than still. The way it had gone the first night, when he felt me. Only this time it didn’t come back. It stayed still. For a long, long time.

And then something moved in it. Deep down. Very far down, where I couldn’t follow.

And I felt him do something I didn’t know he could do.

He flinched.

* * *

”I can wait,” said the voice at last.

It was quieter than before. Not as warm. Not cold, either. Just quieter. Like a man speaking in an empty room after everyone’s gone.

”I’ve always been able to wait.”

”I know,” said Carol. ”Wait, then. Wait as long as you like. The answer will still be the same.”

”You’ll come to me in the end,” said the voice. ”Everything I hold does.”

”You don’t hold me,” said Carol. ”You never did. I held you. Once. In a dream. A hand’s width from my face.” She was quiet a moment. ”And then I let go. Because I wanted to.”

* * *

She turned around.

Not to the link. To the doorway. To Seraphina.

”Sera,” she said. ”Now. Please.”

* * *

Seraphina came into the room.

She put her tea down on the floor by the door, very carefully, so it wouldn’t spill. And walked down the rows of black iron to the end, where the six taffy links lay, one of them still white with the holding-frost and still, very faintly, humming.

She knelt down in front of them.

And looked at me.

”Garrick,” she said. ”Help me.”

I didn’t understand at first. She didn’t need help. She’d cut the whole great chain at Concordia by herself, link by link, with the First Flame.

Then I did understand. She wasn’t asking for help with the iron. She was asking me to be in it. With her. Not standing behind somebody’s shoulder. Beside.

So I knelt down next to her on the cold stone floor. And she put her hands on the links. And I put mine over hers.

* * *

I’d meant to borrow her fire. That’s what I do. That’s what I’ve always done; I reach for whatever god is next to me and use it the way they do.

That’s not what happened.

What happened was that something came up out of me that wasn’t hers. Wasn’t my father’s storm, or Carol’s frost, or Thor’s strength, or Damar’s stone. It came up out of the middle of me, where all of those things have been living together since I was born, growing into each other, the way my father said on the deck of the Heron. And it came out through my hands and into Seraphina’s and into the iron.

It wasn’t white-gold. It wasn’t any color I’d seen before.

It was gray.

Not dull. Not ashy. Gray the way the sky is gray in the very first minute of dawn, before the sun’s come up, when the dark is just starting to remember it’s going to be light. A gray with every color folded up inside it, waiting. It came out of my hands like that, quiet and steady and very, very bright, and it went into the iron beside Seraphina’s white-gold, and the two of them went through the links together.

And the links didn’t melt.

They ended.

* * *

There’s no other word for it. They didn’t run like candle wax. They didn’t split like the anchor at Concordia. They just stopped being. All six of them. One moment they were lying on the stone under our hands, black iron with fist-letters cut into them, and the frost on one of them still faintly humming. And the next moment there was nothing there. Not ash. Not dust. Just stone. Cold, clean, ordinary stone, with the marks of our hands on it in the frost.

And from very, very far away, through nothing at all now, I heard something.

Not a voice. Not words.

A door closing. On the far side of the world. Slowly. Carefully. The way you’d close a door on a room you didn’t want to look into anymore.

* * *

Seraphina was staring at my hands.

”Garrick,” she said. ”That wasn’t mine.”

”No.”

”That wasn’t anybody’s.”

”No,” I said. I looked at my hands. They were still faintly gray at the fingertips, the way hers go white-gold. ”It was mine.”

Behind us, in the doorway, nobody said anything for a long time.

Then my father said, very quietly, the way he’d say it was going to rain:

”There it is.”

* * *

We went up to the little kitchen afterward. All of us. At three in the morning. Helena was already there with the kettle on, because of course she was.

And my father put his muddy boots by the fire, at last, and sat down at the scrubbed table in his socks, and untied the bundle he’d carried all the way from the Ilvane.

It was cloth. A bolt of it, folded. Woven wool, soft and close and heavy. The color of a river in spring: blue, with gray in it, and silver where the light caught the thread.

”From Saba,” said my father. He looked at Iselle. ”She said you’d know what it means.”

Iselle had gone very still. She put out her open right hand and touched the cloth.

”It’s the one on the loom,” she said. ”When I left. When I was twelve. She was halfway through it.” Her voice shook. ”She never finished it. She told me in a letter she’d stopped. She said she couldn’t.”

”She finished it,” said my father. ”The night I was there. All night. She sang the whole song, every verse, the one about the girl who married the wrong boy, and she didn’t stop until the last row was done.” He was quiet a moment. ”And then she cut it off the loom and folded it and gave it to me and said, Take this to her first. I’ll come after. Three days. I have to say goodbye to the river.”

Iselle put both hands on the cloth.

She didn’t cry. She just stood there, with her open hands on her mother’s weaving, very still.

”She’s coming,” she said.

”She’s coming,” said my father.

* * *

Mary wrote it at four in the morning. She wrote it last of all, after everything else had been said, and everyone had gone up to bed except her and me and the kettle.

Carol told him her whole name. Carol Grey. Daughter of Uriah and Evelyn. Sister of Garrick. Of Greykeep, where the doors are asked.

Then she said: No.

He said: I can wait. She said: wait, then.

Seraphina and Garrick put their hands on the links. Garrick’s light was gray. Not borrowed. His own. The links ended.

Uriah said: There it is.

Saba finished the cloth. She is coming in three days. She is saying goodbye to the river.

And under that, in Carol’s hand:

Carol Grey. All the way to the end.
