The Greykeep Chronicles

My father left for the Ilvane valley at six in the morning, by the fast way, from the end of the east wall.

He doesn’t usually go by the fast way. He says it’s rude to arrive anywhere faster than the news that you’re coming. But it’s eleven days to the southern valleys on a good horse, Helena says, and he’d promised Iselle tomorrow, and my father doesn’t break that kind of promise.

Iselle came up onto the east wall in the gray before sunrise to see him off. In her coat and her blue scarf, with her right hand open at her side, still a little stiff in the fingers. She’d moved into her new room the night before: a small one at the top of the west range, with one tall window facing the sea, where the weather comes from. Helena had put a honey biscuit on the sill without being asked.

She gave my father three things.

The first was a letter for her mother, in Kethran, sealed with plain gray wax and her own thumbprint. No Who Holds mark.

The second was a drawing. Not a map; Iselle doesn’t think in maps. A drawing of the valley as she remembered it from the floor under her mother’s loom: two mountains, a river between them, a mill with a wheel, a lane of small houses going down to the water, and the last house on the lane, right on the river, with a door painted blue.

”You go in the back,” she said. ”Through the garden. Nobody uses the front. The front’s for funerals and the tax man.”

”The back,” said my father.

The third thing was a verse. She sang it to him, very quietly, on the east wall, in the cold. Four lines in the old valley tongue, with a tune that went up and then down like a river going over stones.

”It’s the first verse of the one she sings at the loom,” said Iselle. ”The one about the girl who married the wrong boy. If she won’t let you in, sing her that. She’ll know it came from me. Nobody else would know which verse.” She looked down. ”She’ll probably still make you take your boots off.”

My father sang it back to her. Badly. He has no ear for tunes. Iselle laughed and corrected the third line, and he sang it again, a little less badly.

Then he took off his boots, and handed them to me, and stood on the east wall in his old gray socks with the darned heel.

”So I don’t forget,” he said.

And went. White-gold, out of a clear sky, with a crack of thunder that rattled every window on the east side of the castle and woke little Uriah, who said ”Gampa” for the first time in his life, very loudly, and then went back to sleep.

* * *

I carried my father’s boots around all day. I don’t know why. I put them by the fire in the little kitchen, and then I picked them up again, and then I put them in the south solar by his chair, and then I took them up to the map room and put them on the floor beside the silk, at the edge of the southern valleys, as if that would help him find his way back.

Mary saw me do it. She didn’t say anything. She wrote something in her book.

* * *

The Castellan woke me at ten past two.

Not with a knock. It doesn’t knock. It was just there, at the foot of our bed, in the dark: a shape like a tall plain door standing in the middle of the floor, where there wasn’t a door. It had never come into our rooms before. It had come up the east stair once, to tell me the herds hadn’t come through. It had never once come in.

Seraphina woke at the same moment I did. She didn’t scream. She looked at it, and then at me, and then she put her hand on my arm.

”Garrick Grey,” said the Castellan. Very quietly. Its voice came from everywhere and nowhere, the way it does in the lower hall. ”There is a voice in the iron room.”

* * *

The iron room is under the lower hall. The old cistern stores, where the chain had been taken the day before, after Eleanor and Wynn finished reading it. Eleanor had asked the Castellan for a room with no windows and only one door, and the Castellan had given her the deepest one it had, and she’d laid the chain out on the stone floor in its rows again, every piece, and locked the door with a key she’d cut herself and put the key on a string around her neck.

I went down in my nightshirt with a candle. Seraphina came with me, in my old coat, with little Uriah left asleep in the nursery under Carol’s light and Helena, who’d heard the Castellan go past her door, sitting in the chair beside the cradle.

And Carol was already there.

She was standing outside the iron room door at the bottom of the cistern stair, barefoot, in her nightgown and Ignatius’s old green coat. Ignatius was behind her with a candle. Eleanor was beside them, in a dressing gown and her coat over it, with the key in her hand and her face gray.

”I heard it,” said Carol. Without turning around. ”Up at the top of the tower. Through the stone. All hundred and forty steps.” She looked at the door. ”It said my name.”

* * *

Eleanor unlocked the door.

It was very cold inside. Colder than the cistern stair, colder than the lower hall in midwinter. The candles guttered. The chain lay where Eleanor had left it, in its long rows on the stone floor: the anchors, the hundreds of cut links, Iselle’s short length on its white cloth by itself.

And at the end of the rows, the six taffy links.

The ones that had been wound around Carol. Around her ankles and her waist. The ones that said carried whole.

One of them was frosted.

Not Carol’s frost. Not ferns. Flat and smooth and white, like the inside of a cellar door in winter. Like the frost that had come on her fingers the night she dreamed of the golden city and a man with his hand flat against a wall.

The holding.

And from inside that one frosted link, very quietly, a voice was speaking.

* * *

I’d never heard him. None of us had. Not his own voice. Not ever.

I’d thought it would be terrible. Cold, or cruel, or vast, like a storm coming in off the sea. I’d thought it would sound the way the Hushed look.

It didn’t.

It was a man’s voice. Low. Quiet. Unhurried. Not old, not young. The voice of somebody reading aloud by a fire in the evening, to someone he’s fond of, who might be falling asleep. There was nothing cruel in it at all. That was the worst thing. There was nothing in it but patience, and a kind of tired, careful warmth, like a man who’s been awake for a very long time and is glad to finally be talking to someone.

It was speaking in Kethran. Then it stopped. And when it began again, it was in the common tongue, slowly, as if it had remembered who it was speaking to and had decided to be polite.

”Carol,” it said.

Not Carol Grey. Just Carol. The way the hollow one had sung it, from the sea, with the Grey left off.

* * *

Carol stood in the doorway of the iron room with her hand on the frame.

She didn’t answer. I felt her not answer, through the middle. I felt her hold it, the way she holds her breath on the top landing of the north tower before she goes out onto the roof.

”I held your hand once,” said the voice. ”In the river. Do you remember? It was the first time in three hundred years anyone’s hand was the right size. And you held mine back.”

The frost on the link spread, very slowly, a little way across the stone floor.

”And then you held me still. In the dream. A hand’s width from your face.” A pause. ”Nobody’s ever done that. Not in my whole life. I’ve thought about it every night since.”

Carol’s fingers tightened on the doorframe.

”You carry a piece of me,” said the voice. ”You’ve carried it since the river. You use it every day, I think. When you keep the tea hot. When you stop the curtains swinging. When you hold your little brother’s door shut so the draft doesn’t wake him.” The voice was very gentle. ”I can feel you use it. Every time. Like someone humming in another room.”

* * *

I took a step forward.

I didn’t decide to. I just did. Into the iron room, between my sister and the frosted link, with my candle in my hand.

And the voice stopped.

For a long moment, nothing. Just the cold, and the candles guttering, and the frost on the stone floor.

Then:

”Ah,” said the voice. ”The brother.”

* * *

He knew me.

That was the first thing. He knew exactly who I was, without my saying a word, the way you’d know a voice on the stair. And there was something in the way he said the brother that I didn’t like at all. Not anger. Not contempt. Interest. The same interest Carol had felt in the dream, when she held his hand still and he looked at it the way you’d look at a dog that had just spoken.

”You carry everything,” said the voice. ”Don’t you. Every god you’ve ever stood beside. Like a magpie with a nest full of rings.” A pause. ”I’ve wondered how much. I’ve wondered since the stream.”

I didn’t answer.

But I listened. Not to the words. Through them.

* * *

I don’t know how to explain what I did next. It was the same thing I’d done in the fountain at Concordia, standing up to my shins in cold water and reading the door all the way to the other end. Only this time, there wasn’t a door. There was a voice. Coming through one small link of frosted iron, from somewhere very far away.

And I followed it back.

Not far. I didn’t dare go far. But far enough to feel what was speaking.

And it was so big.

I’d known it would be. I’d felt the edge of him once, at Orselle, the cold patient leaning. I’d felt his holding come down the Ilvane through Carol, years ago. I knew he was old, and strong, and that he held the sea flat and a hundred gods in chains.

But I’d never felt him. Not him.

It was like standing at the edge of a sea at night and putting your hand in the water and feeling, all at once, how far down it goes. Not cold. Not cruel. Just deep. A depth that went down and down past anything I knew how to measure, still and dark and patient, holding everything in it perfectly flat and perfectly quiet, the way Draum holds the sea off the golden coast.

I stood in the iron room with my candle and felt it, and felt how small I was beside it.

* * *

And then I felt something else.

I felt him feel me.

Through the same link. Coming the other way. The way you feel somebody’s hand go still on the other end of a rope when they realize you’ve taken hold of it too.

And for one moment, a very small moment, that deep dark patient sea went still. Stiller than still. The way a room goes quiet when someone comes in that nobody expected.

”Oh,” said the voice.

Very softly.

”You’re bigger than you were.” Another pause. Longer. ”Since the festival. Since my ring.” And then, quieter still, as if to himself: ”Kessavel said it would lock you. He didn’t say what would happen when it stopped.”

* * *

I didn’t say anything.

I wanted to. I wanted to say yes. I’m bigger. And I’ll be bigger still. And one day I’ll come across that sea with every god I’ve ever stood beside, and you’ll feel me coming the way the shore feels the tide.

I didn’t.

Because I remembered my father on the deck of the Heron. You’ll go as the angriest. And I remembered that this voice had been listening to Iselle’s mother sing for nine years, and had learned everything from what people let slip. And I thought: every word I say to him, he’ll count.

So I let go of the link. And stepped back. Out of the way. Back to the doorway, beside my sister.

And the voice, after a moment, went back to her.

* * *

”I won’t keep you,” it said. ”It’s late. You should be asleep, at the top of your tower, with your Ignatius in the chair by the window.”

Carol’s hand went white on the doorframe. Ignatius, behind her, went very still.

”I only wanted you to hear my voice,” said Malachar. ”Once. So you’d know it. So you’d know I’m not what they tell you. I’m not cruel, Carol. I’ve never been cruel to anything I hold. Ask the sea.” A pause. ”I don’t want to hurt you. I never did. The chain was made to carry you whole. You know that now. Your clever ward-maker read it.”

Eleanor, beside me, closed her eyes.

”I’ll speak to you again,” said the voice. ”Not tonight. When you’re ready to hear the rest. There’s a great deal more I want to say, and I want to say it properly.” It was very gentle. Very patient. Very warm. ”Take your time. I’ve always been able to wait.”

The frost on the link began to draw back. Slowly. Across the stone floor, the way the tide goes out over sand.

And then, just before it was gone, very quietly, as if he were saying good night:

”You’ll come to me in the end, Carol. Everything I hold does.”

And the link was just iron.

* * *

Nobody said anything for a long time.

The candles steadied. The cold in the iron room began, very slowly, to be just the ordinary cold of a cellar at night. The frost was gone from the floor.

Carol was still standing in the doorway with her hand on the frame.

”I didn’t answer,” she said at last.

”No,” I said.

”I wanted to.” She took her hand off the frame and looked at it. ”I wanted to say you may not. The way I did in the dream. The way I did on the parade ground.” She looked at the link, lying on the floor at the end of its row. ”And I didn’t. Because I didn’t know what he was going to say next. And I wanted to hear it.”

”Carol,” said Ignatius, behind her. Very quietly.

”I know.” She didn’t turn around. ”I know what that sounds like.”

* * *

Seraphina stepped forward.

”I’ll melt it,” she said. ”Now. Tonight. All six of them. I’ll melt them into the floor of this room and nobody will ever speak through them again.”

Carol turned around and looked at her.

”No,” she said.

”Carol...”

”No,” said Carol again. Not loudly. ”Sera. Please. Not yet.”

Seraphina looked at her for a long moment. Her eyes had gone very faintly white-gold at the edges.

”Tell me why,” she said. ”And I’ll listen.”

* * *

Carol was quiet for a while. Then she said:

”He’s going to talk again. He said so. And he’s going to say the rest. Whatever the rest is. Whatever he wants from me, under the chain and the stone and the page and the festival. Whatever he’s been building all this time.” She looked at the link. ”If you melt it, he’ll find another way to say it. A dream. A song in the fog. Another page in somebody’s pocket. And I won’t be standing in a room with all of you around me when he does. I’ll be at the top of the tower, alone, at three in the morning.”

She looked at me.

”I want to hear it here,” she said. ”In this room. With the door open and all of you in the doorway. And when he’s finished, I want to answer him. Here. In the same iron he used. So he hears it the way he made me hear him.” Her chin went up. ”And then Sera can melt it.”

Seraphina looked at her for a long time.

Then the white-gold went out of her eyes.

”All right,” she said. ”But not alone. Not ever alone. Not once.”

”No,” said Carol. ”Not once.”

* * *

Eleanor locked the door again. She cut a second key the next morning and gave it to Carol, on a string, the same as hers. And the Castellan, when we came back up the cistern stair into the lower hall at three in the morning, said something I’ve never heard it say before.

”A voice,” it said. ”Not admitted.”

Then, after a pause:

”Not let in.”

* * *

Mary wrote it at breakfast. She’d come down at six and found us all in the little kitchen, nobody having gone back to bed, and Helena making porridge for seven at a quarter past six as if she’d planned it.

Uriah went to the Ilvane by the fast way at six. In his socks. Garrick has his boots.

Little Uriah said Gampa.

Two in the morning: a voice in the iron room. One of the six links that went around Carol. The holding-frost on it.

Malachar’s own voice. The first time. Quiet. Patient. Not cruel. He called her Carol, without the Grey. He said: I held your hand once. He said: you carry a piece of me. He said: you’ll come to me in the end. Everything I hold does.

Garrick listened through it, back toward him. Malachar felt Garrick. He said: you’re bigger than you were.

Carol did not answer. She wants to hear the rest before she does. Seraphina will not melt it yet.

Not alone. Not once.

And under that, in Carol’s own hand, very small:

He still hasn’t said my whole name.
