The Greykeep Chronicles

Iselle came to Orselle the next morning, with Roderic.

She didn’t have to. I want to say that first. Nobody ordered her, and nobody would have. My father sent a note through the gate at Concordia, in his own hand, very short, and Roderic carried it to her room at the top of the east range of Io’s college and waited outside the door while she read it.

There’s writing under a gate in Orselle. Eleanor can’t read it. We think it might be Kethran, but old. Would you look at it? You can say no. U.

She came out of her room five minutes later with her coat on and her blue scarf around her head and a small book under her arm.

”It’s not Kethran,” she said to Roderic, on the stairs. ”If Eleanor can’t read it, it’s not Kethran. She’s been learning Kethran all autumn.” She held the little book tighter. ”I think I know what it is. I hope I’m wrong.”

* * *

I folded them both to the square, because the Orselle gate was closed.

Eleanor had been there all night. She hadn’t moved from the plate except to drink the soup Kip brought her. The brazier the lamp-seller lent her was still burning beside her on the white stone. Her spectacles were pushed up into her hair, which is the color of iron filings and was sticking out in all directions, and she had her bone-handled chisel in its cloth on the stone beside her, and a jar of peppermints, three-quarters empty.

And beside her, holding the lamp, was Wynn.

He’d come at midnight, she said. He’d heard at the lower hall that the Orselle gate was closed and walked through the Lyradon arch and down the coast road in the dark, three hours, and arrived white-faced and out of breath and asked to help. He was thin and quick and young, with ink on his cuffs, and he looked as if he hadn’t slept either.

”I cut the locked-name line on this plate,” he said to me, before I could say anything. ”With her. In the autumn. I held the paste.” He looked at the black writing crawling under the stone, still showing from where Aelune had touched it. ”It was right there. Under my brush. And I didn’t see it.”

”Neither did I,” said Eleanor, without looking up. ”Neither did the Castellan. Hold the lamp still, Wynn.”

He held the lamp still.

* * *

Iselle walked across the white stone of the square to the gate.

She stopped a pace from the plate. She didn’t kneel down beside Eleanor. She stood there very straight, with her blue scarf around her head and the little book held against her chest, and looked at the black writing under the stone for a long time.

I saw her right hand close.

It does that, still. When she’s frightened. It closes into a fist, the way it did the first day she came to Greykeep, the way every hand in the golden city is taught to close. And then, after a moment, she opens it again on purpose. Roderic told me she does it a dozen times a day now. Closes it. Opens it. Like someone practicing a word in a language they’re still learning.

She closed it. And then she didn’t open it.

”It’s oath-script,” she said.

* * *

She opened the little book and showed us.

It was very old, and very small, bound in cracked black leather, and the pages were thin and brown at the edges. On every page there were rows of the same kind of letters as the ones under Eleanor’s plate. Narrow and spiked and closed. Every one of them shaped like a fist.

”Every child in the golden city learns to read this,” said Iselle. ”Not to write it. Only to read it. When you’re seven, you go to the temple of oaths, and a priest puts this book in front of you, and you read the Little Oath out of it. Aloud. In front of everybody.” She turned the pages. ”I am held. I hold. What I swear, I keep. What keeps me, I serve.” She said it flatly, the way you’d recite a list. ”Everybody swears it. Everybody. Children of the street and children of the palace. It’s the first thing you ever promise anyone.”

”Who wrote it?” said Eleanor quietly.

”The book? Nobody knows. It’s old.” Iselle shut it. ”But the script is his. The god of oaths. The one every Kethran used to swear by, before the emperor. Before the Chains.” She looked at the plate. ”Kessavel.”

Nobody said anything.

”Only he writes it like that,” said Iselle. ”The way it is under your plate. The priests write it. Scribes write it. But it’s always a copy of his hand, and you can tell, because a copy is careful. It tries.” She pointed at the black writing without touching it. ”That isn’t trying. That’s him. Every letter closed all the way. The priests always leave a little gap at the bottom of each fist, so it can breathe. He never does.” Her voice was very steady. ”I’ve only ever seen his own hand once. On the chain. The first link. The one he forged from the oldest oath he ever witnessed and locked on his own wrist, and handed the other end to my brother. They display it, on feast days, in the great hall of the palace. On a black cushion. Everybody files past.” She swallowed. ”That’s what this looks like.”

* * *

”Can you read it?” I said.

”Some of it.” She knelt down then, at last, beside Eleanor, on the frosted white stone, and opened her little book on her knee, and bent over the plate. Roderic came and crouched behind her, not touching her, close enough that she’d know he was there. Wynn held the lamp.

She read for a long time. Her lips moved. Every now and then she turned a page in the little book and compared something, and frowned, and went back.

”It’s an oath,” she said at last. ”Of course it’s an oath. He doesn’t write anything else.”

”What does it say?”

She read it to us. In the common tongue, slowly, translating as she went, with her finger hovering just above the black writing.

”This door is held. What passes is held. Each name that passes, a thread to me. I keep the thread. I keep the name.”

She stopped.

”There’s more,” she said. ”It goes on. Over and over. Down into the stone.” She looked up at Eleanor. ”But that’s what it says. That’s what it does.”

Eleanor had gone very white.

”Every name,” she said. ”Everybody who’s come through this gate. For three years.”

”A thread of each one,” said Iselle. ”Not the whole name. He can’t take a whole name through a door. Not without asking, and they wouldn’t have said yes. Just a thread. A little piece.” She looked at the black rows crawling under the stone. ”Kept here. In the plate. Like a ledger.”

And from the arch behind us, where nobody had heard it come through Eleanor’s closed gate, because it is the one thing in the world that Eleanor’s closing mark never closes on, the Castellan said, in a voice I had never once heard it use:

”A second ledger.”

* * *

It had come through from the lower hall. Eleanor’s closing mark was cut to shut on everyone but her and it. It stood in the shining arch, tall and gray, with one metal hand on the pillar above the plate. And it was shaking.

I’d never seen it shake. Not in twenty-three years. Not on the night of the stream. Not when the Lockwarden’s key lay in its chest. It stood in the arch with its hand on the stone, and the whole tall metal frame of it trembled, very faintly, like a bell that’s been struck too hard.

”Under mine,” it said. ”Written under mine. A ledger of every name that came through my gate. Every person I have ever greeted at this arch for three years. Every name I fitted, like a key in a lock, and said yes, you may.” Its blank metal face turned to Iselle. ”How many threads?”

Iselle looked at the plate.

”I don’t know,” she said. ”Every crossing.”

”Four thousand, one hundred and nine crossings,” said the Castellan. ”Three thousand two hundred and six names. Some came through many times. Merchants. Porters. Grandmothers visiting grandchildren.” It paused. ”Kip Marrow, two hundred and forty-four times.”

”He’d be in it?”

”He wiped it,” said the Castellan. ”Every week. His name is in it more than anyone’s.” Its hand on the pillar tightened. ”They are mine. Every name on that list. I greeted every one of them. I said yes. And under my yes, someone was taking a thread.”

It took its hand away from the stone.

”I would like it out,” said the Castellan. ”Please. Every letter. I would like them all back.”

* * *

Eleanor tried that afternoon.

She cleaned the plate with vinegar and her soft cloth, the way she does before every cut. She unwrapped the bone-handled chisel from its own cloth. She put her glass to her eye and found the first black letter, right at the top left corner of the plate, just under her own closing mark, and set the point of the chisel against it, and began to cut.

It was very slow work. The black writing wasn’t on the surface. It was in the stone. She had to go down after it, a hair at a time, scraping the stone away around it so carefully that her own pale marks above it weren’t touched. Wynn held the lamp and didn’t breathe. It took her nearly an hour to take out one letter. One fist-shaped letter, about the size of a grain of rice.

When it was gone, there was a tiny hollow in the stone, clean and pale. Eleanor sat back on her heels and looked at it, and for the first time in a day and a night, she almost smiled.

”One,” she said.

And in the morning, it was back.

* * *

I was there when she found it. Kip had come up the harbor steps at six with bread, and I’d folded across from Greykeep with Helena’s tea in a stone bottle, and Eleanor had slept for three hours on a pallet in the lamp-seller’s back room and come out into the gray dawn with her chisel in her hand, ready to start on letter two.

She knelt down in front of the plate, and put her glass to her eye, and stopped.

The little clean hollow was still there, where she’d cut. But at the bottom of it, very small, very black, glinting like wet iron, the letter had grown back. Exactly the same. Every line closed. As if she’d never touched it.

Eleanor didn’t say anything for a long time.

Then she put her glass down on the white stone, very carefully, and put her face in her hands.

* * *

It was Iselle who understood.

She’d stayed the night in Orselle too, at the inn on the harbor, with Roderic sleeping on a bench in the taproom downstairs because he wouldn’t go home without her. She came up the three hundred steps at seven with the little black book under her arm, and looked at the plate, and at Eleanor, and at the letter that had grown back. And she sat down on the cold stone beside Eleanor and opened the book.

”I’m sorry,” she said. ”I should have told you yesterday. I didn’t think.” She turned the pages. ”It’s an oath. You can’t cut an oath out. Not one of his. That’s the whole point of him. That’s why everyone in Kethra swore by him. Because once something was sworn in his hand, it stayed sworn.” She found the page she wanted. ”The priests have a saying. What the hand lays down, only the hand takes up.”

”What does that mean?” said Eleanor, through her fingers.

”It means an oath in his script can only be unsworn by the hand that laid it down.” Iselle looked up from the book. ”He didn’t write this. Not here. Not with his own hand. He couldn’t have. He’s never been to Avarra. Somebody else put it into the stone for him. Every week. With a cloth. From a bottle.” She looked across the square. ”That’s the hand.”

Everybody turned.

Kip Marrow was standing at the top of the harbor steps, with a loaf of bread in each hand, staring at us.

* * *

He didn’t want to.

I want to be honest about that. He went white, and then red, and then he put the bread down on the edge of the fountain very carefully, and backed away from the plate as if it might reach out and take hold of him.

”No,” he said. ”No. I can’t. I’m not... I don’t want to touch it. I don’t ever want to touch it again.” His hand went to his wrist. ”Please. Don’t make me.”

”Nobody’s going to make you,” I said.

”You can say no,” said Iselle quietly.

Kip looked at her. At Eleanor, with her face still in her hands. At the Castellan, standing tall and gray and silent in the arch, its blank face turned toward him. At the black writing, three years of his own last-nights-of-the-week, crawling under the stone.

”Three thousand two hundred and six names,” he said slowly.

”Yes,” said the Castellan.

”And mine.”

”Yours more than anyone’s.”

Kip was quiet for a long time. The gulls cried over the harbor. Down on the quays, somebody was rolling barrels.

Then he walked back across the white stone to the plate. Slowly. And knelt down beside Eleanor, on the other side from Iselle. And held out his hand.

”Show me how,” he said. His voice was shaking. ”Please. I don’t know how to hold a chisel.”

Eleanor took her hands away from her face.

She looked at him for a long moment. Then she picked up the bone-handled chisel, and put it in his hand, and closed his fingers around it, and put her own hand over his.

”Like this,” she said. ”Gently. Like you’re getting a splinter out.”

* * *

It took them six days.

Kip held the chisel. Eleanor held his hand. Iselle sat beside them with the little black book open on her knee and read each letter aloud before they took it out, so they’d know exactly what they were unsaying. And before Kip set the point against each black fist in the stone, he said the same thing. Every time. Very quietly, to the plate.

”I didn’t know. I didn’t mean it. I take it back.”

And the letter came out.

Not like Eleanor’s first one. It didn’t leave a clean hollow. It crumbled. Under the point of the chisel in Kip’s hand, each black letter went to gray powder, fine as ash, and the powder lifted off the stone in the sea wind and blew away. And it didn’t grow back. Not that night, or the next, or ever.

And with every letter, something else went too.

I felt it the first time. A tiny breath, coming up out of the stone. Warm. Like someone letting out a sigh in their sleep. It went up past my face and away, over the roofs of Orselle, and was gone. And the Castellan, standing in the arch, said quietly, ”Mabry Brack. Fishwife. Eleven crossings. Home.”

The next letter. Another breath. ”Tom Avel. Glassmaker’s son. Three crossings. Home.”

And the next. And the next.

* * *

It went on for six days. All day, every day, from first light until the lamp-seller lit her lamps in the evening. Kip with the chisel, and Eleanor’s hand over his, and Iselle with the book, and the Castellan in the arch saying every name as it went home. Wynn held the lamp when the light went, and brought water, and never once complained, and on the third night he asked Iselle, very shyly, whether she’d teach him to read the oath-script, so that he’d see it the next time. She said yes.

People came. That was the thing I hadn’t expected. By the second day, half of Orselle had heard what was happening in the gate square, and they came up the three hundred steps to watch. They didn’t crowd. They stood around the edges of the square in the cold, quietly, with their hands in their pockets, and listened to the Castellan read out the names.

And sometimes, when a name went home, someone in the crowd made a sound.

A fishwife put her hand to her mouth. An old man sat down on the edge of the fountain very suddenly and said, ”Oh,” and then, after a while, ”I’d forgotten my wife’s laugh. I’d forgotten I’d forgotten it.” A girl of about ten, standing with her mother, said loudly, ”I feel lighter,” and everyone laughed, and then didn’t.

Master Avel the glassmaker came up on the fourth day, a big bald man with burn scars on both his forearms, and stood at the back of the crowd for an hour without saying anything. And when the Castellan said Tom Avel, glassmaker’s son, home, he put his hand over his eyes and stood like that for a long time. And then he went down the steps and came back with a crate of glass lamps, small ones, blue glass with brass caps, and gave one to every person in the square, and wouldn’t take a coin from anybody.

* * *

On the fourth day, the slate stallion came.

The old one with the broken horn, from Aelune’s herd. He came through my fold from the Lyradon orchards with two young mares, because Aelune had asked him to, and because Eleanor had asked Aelune. And for three days, while Kip and Eleanor worked on the Orselle plate, the three unicorns walked every other gate in Avarra with Wynn and me and the Castellan.

Thirty gates. Market squares and crossroads. The bakery in Thistlemoor, where Oskar Bell fed the stallion an entire loaf and was not sick. The sheep-fold in the far east, where the shepherds came out of their huts and took their hats off. The arches in the lower hall at Greykeep. The big gate to Concordia.

At every one, the slate stallion lowered his broken horn and touched it to Eleanor’s plate. And at every one, the frost stayed white.

Thirty gates. Clean.

”Only the one,” said the stallion, on the last evening, in the lower hall, in a voice like stones grinding in a river. It was the first thing he’d said to me in three days. ”Only the one gate had the bottle. Only the one boy.” He looked at me with his dark old eyes. ”Tell the woman who writes the doors. Her doors are good. All but one. And the one is nearly clean.”

* * *

They finished on the sixth evening, at sunset.

The last letter was at the very bottom of the plate, right in the corner, tucked under the lowest stroke of Eleanor’s locked-name line. Iselle read it aloud. Kip set the chisel. Eleanor’s hand was over his.

”I didn’t know,” said Kip, to the plate, for the three thousand two hundred and sixth time. ”I didn’t mean it. I take it back.”

The last black letter went to gray dust and blew away over the roofs of Orselle in the red light.

And the Castellan, in the arch, said: ”Kip Marrow. Porter. Two hundred and forty-four crossings.”

It paused.

”Home.”

* * *

Eleanor cut the plate fresh the next morning. All of it. Her closing mark, held, the right way around. Her name-knot. The locked-name line. And one new line under it, at the very bottom, that Iselle helped her with: a single short phrase in oath-script, very small, with a little gap left open at the bottom of every letter, the way the priests write it, so it can breathe.

Nothing held here.

Then she opened the Orselle gate from both sides.

Kip went through first. He asked if he could. He walked into the shining arch with his porter’s strap over his shoulder, and the Castellan was standing on the other side in the lower hall at Greykeep, and it looked down at him and said, the way it says it to everybody, every time:

”Kip Marrow. Yes. You may.”

And then, for the first time in its whole long life that anybody knows of, it said one more word to a person’s face.

”Mine.”

* * *

Mary wrote it at the scrubbed table that night.

Orselle. Kessavel’s oath-script under the plate, read by Iselle: each name that passes, a thread to me. Laid by a branded hand, with a cloth, from a cold black bottle, every week for three years. 3,206 names. Could not be cut. Only unsworn, by the hand that laid it.

Kip Marrow held the chisel. Eleanor held his hand. Iselle read. The Castellan said every name. Six days. All home.

Thirty other gates walked by the unicorns. Clean.

Kip Marrow: Mine. (The Castellan.)

And on the shelf in the little kitchen, the next morning, there was a small blue glass lamp with a brass cap that hadn’t been there before. Helena said Kip had brought it up the hill at dawn and left it on the step. For the lady who makes the tea, the note said. From the glassmaker’s. From me.

Helena put it in the window. She lights it every night now.
