The Greykeep Chronicles

Eleanor didn’t sleep for two nights after Coldbrook.

I know, because her lamp was lit in the drafting room above the chapel both nights until dawn, and on the second morning Helena sent me up with a tray of porridge and a pot of tea and orders not to come back down until Eleanor had eaten both. I found her at her long table under the window with every ward plan she owned unrolled across it, weighted at the corners with brass weights and teacups and the jar of peppermints, and her spectacles pushed up into her iron-gray hair, and her eyes red.

”He read them,” she said, before I’d put the tray down. ”That’s what I can’t stop thinking about. Whoever cut that key. They didn’t guess. They didn’t pick at my locks with a bent nail. They read my plates, from the other side, for years, until they understood my own sentences better than Wynn does.” She pressed the heels of her hands into her eyes. ”And I keep thinking: what else did they read?”

”The plates are the only thing on the far side,” I said. ”Everything else is here.”

”Everything else is in the archive,” said Eleanor. She took her hands away from her face and looked at me. ”Every plan I’ve ever drawn. Every gate, every ward, every line of every sentence, in my own hand, on one great sheet, so that if I died tomorrow someone else could read it and keep the whole thing standing.” She swallowed. ”The Long Plan. I’ve never told anyone outside this castle it exists.”

”It’s behind the Castellan’s door,” I said. ”He stood in front of it and told Severin it was his. Nobody gets past the Castellan.”

”Teo did,” said Eleanor.

I didn’t say anything.

”He walked through our great hall for weeks,” said Eleanor quietly. ”In the summer. While the barge was coming upriver. With a god inside him whose whole domain was not being noticed. The Castellan touched the same place on the east wall nine times and couldn’t remember it. Nine times.” She pushed her chair back. ”Eat that porridge, Garrick. Then go and find Mary. I want to open the archive.”

* * *

The archive is at the end of a short passage past the Westmere arch, in the lower hall. About twenty feet. You’d never know it was there unless someone showed you. It isn’t on any plan. Not even Eleanor’s. At the end of it there’s a plain oak door banded with iron, with an iron ring and no lock you can see, and the Castellan standing in front of it.

There were four of us. Eleanor, with her roll of chisels and a lamp. Mary, with the second key on a ribbon around her neck and her black Council book under her arm, because she doesn’t go anywhere important without it. Me. And the Castellan, who opened the door for us without being asked, and then followed us in, stooping.

I’d been in the archive twice before. It’s a long, low, dry room cut into the rock under the castle, lined from floor to ceiling with wooden racks and pigeonholes and flat oak drawers, and it smells of old paper and lamp oil and the faint sharp smell of Eleanor’s black paste. Every gate ledger the Castellan has ever filled is there, in rows of identical gray bindings. Every one of Mary’s important letters, in boxes with the year inked on the end. The fair copy of my notebook that Wynn made, in a folder tied with black ribbon. And at the far end, laid flat in a long shallow drawer of its own, under a sheet of plain linen, the Long Plan.

Eleanor drew back the linen.

I’d never seen it before. It was enormous. A single sheet of heavy cream paper, longer than I am tall, pieced together from smaller sheets with a seam every arm’s length that you could only see if you looked for it. And on it, in Eleanor’s fine black ink, the whole of the gate network of Avarra.

Every gate. All thirty-one. Not drawn where they are on a map, because a map wouldn’t show what matters. Drawn the way they work. Every far end around the outside of the sheet in a great ring, each one a small neat circle with its name and its town and its kingdom in Eleanor’s tiny capitals, and every one of them joined by a long fine line to the middle of the sheet. To a single shape, drawn larger and darker than the rest, like the hub of a wheel.

The lower hall. Six arches in a row. And the big gate in Concordia’s gate square beside it, joined to it by a short thick line. The heart of everything. The place every road in Avarra ran into, the way every road on the silk map ran into the golden city.

Except that ours went both ways.

And down the margins, and around every circle, and between every line, in writing so small you needed a glass to read it, the sentences. Every ward on every gate, written out in full. Every closing mark. Every name-knot. The grammar of the whole thing, laid out flat, so that anyone who could read it would know exactly how every door on the continent was held shut.

Eleanor stood looking at it with the lamp in her hand.

”Twenty years,” she said softly. ”I started this the week after the stream.”

Then she bent down, very close, with the lamp held low over the paper, and went quite still.

* * *

”Garrick,” she said. ”Come here. Bring the other lamp. Hold it low. Lower. There.”

I held it there.

The light fell across the paper at a long, low angle, the way morning light falls across a field. And in that light, the surface of the Long Plan wasn’t smooth anymore.

It was full of holes.

Tiny ones. Smaller than a pinprick. You’d never see them looking straight down. But with the lamp held low, every one of them threw a tiny shadow. And they were everywhere. Along every line. Around every circle. Following every one of the fine black strokes of Eleanor’s handwriting, a hair’s breadth apart, in long patient rows.

”Pounced,” said Eleanor.

Her voice sounded strange.

”It’s an old way of copying,” she said. ”Masons use it. Painters. You lay a clean sheet under the drawing, and you take a needle, and you prick along every line, through both sheets, hole after hole after hole. Then you lift the top sheet away, and you dust the bottom one with charcoal, through the holes, and blow off the loose dust, and there’s your drawing, in little gray dots, exactly. Every line. Every curve.” She bent closer. ”You can copy anything that way. Perfectly. It takes forever. Hours and hours. You’d need to sit with it all night. More than one night.”

She licked her finger and touched it to one of the tiny holes, and held it up to the lamp.

There was a faint smudge of gray on her fingertip.

”Charcoal,” she said. ”Still in the paper. Still in the fibers.” She looked at me. ”Somebody sat in this room. With my plan. All night. For several nights. And copied the whole of it, hole by hole, while the Castellan stood outside the door.”

Mary had her hand over her mouth.

I looked up at the Castellan, stooping under the low ceiling at the end of the drawer.

It wasn’t looking at the Long Plan. It was looking at its own chest. At the little iron door it had shown us in the bakery, over the brass watch. And as I watched, it opened a different door, one lower down, one I’d never seen either, and took out a small gray ledger, very old, with the corners worn smooth, and opened it.

”I keep a book for the archive,” it said. ”Every time the door is opened. Who. When. How long.” It turned the pages, slowly, with one great iron finger. ”I read it every morning. I have read it every morning for twenty years.”

It stopped turning.

It stood for a long time, looking at one page.

Then it turned the book around, very slowly, and held it out to Eleanor.

On the page, in the Castellan’s own square, careful hand, the same hand that writes every crossing in every ledger in the lower hall, there were entries. A column of them. Dates in the summer. Six nights, close together. All at nearly the same hour. Two in the morning. Three.

And beside every date, one word.

Something.

”I wrote those,” said the Castellan.

Its voice was very quiet.

”I wrote them. In my own hand. Six times. And I have read this book every morning for twenty years. And I have never seen them.” It looked at the page. ”Until now. Because now I know what to look for.” It closed the book. ”He was in my archive. Six nights. And I wrote it down. And I did not see it.”

* * *

”The door,” said Mary, at last. Her ears had gone flat against her hair. ”It’s locked. Always. Only Eleanor and I have keys. And the Castellan stands in front of it.”

”The Castellan didn’t notice him,” said Eleanor. ”That’s what the god inside him was for.” She was still looking at the tiny holes in her plan. ”And the lock...” She stopped.

”A cold key,” I said.

They both looked at me.

”The Ember Room,” I said. ”In Concordia. The night of the fire. Io’s lock is older than anything, and it had been opened by a key it liked. A very cold one.” I swallowed. ”I thought of the Lockwarden then. I didn’t say. I didn’t want it to be him.”

Nobody said anything for a long moment.

”It was him,” said Eleanor slowly. ”Then. In the summer. When he was still standing on the bow of that ship, doing what he was told.” She looked at the Castellan’s gray book. ”He made Teo a key for every door he needed. And Teo walked in here six nights running, unnoticed, and sat with my plan, and copied it, hole by hole, and carried it away. And somewhere in the golden city there’s a sheet of paper covered in little gray dots that shows every gate on this continent and every word that holds them shut.” She put her hand flat on the edge of the drawer. ”And then, a few nights ago, the same god stood in a bakery in Thistlemoor with a key that could open all of them. And gave it back.”

”So they have the map,” said Mary quietly. ”But not the key.”

”They have the map,” said Eleanor. ”And the map tells them exactly how to make another key, if anyone over there is patient enough. And it tells them where every door is.” Her voice cracked. ”Twenty years. And I kept it all in one place, so that it would be safe.”

* * *

That was when Moth came.

I didn’t see it come in. Nobody ever does. That’s what Moth is, even now, even named, even with everyone in Greykeep making a point of looking at it whenever it’s in the room. One moment there was nothing on the Long Plan but lamplight and pinholes. The next there was a small gray shape, no bigger than my thumbnail, sitting very still in the exact middle of the sheet. On the dark shape at the hub of the wheel. On the lower hall.

Its wings were trembling.

”Moth,” I said.

It didn’t fly. It didn’t do anything at all. It just sat there in the middle of Eleanor’s plan, on the six little arches drawn in black ink, with its wings shivering, the way a bird shivers on a windowsill in winter.

”It was here,” I said slowly. ”Wasn’t it. It was inside Teo. It came into this room with him. All six nights.”

Moth’s wings went still.

Eleanor had turned. She was looking at the little gray god in the center of her life’s work as though she’d never seen it before. Which I suppose, in a way, she hadn’t.

”Can it tell us?” she said. ”Anything? What he took? Where it went?”

”It can’t talk,” I said. ”Not like that. Carol named it. It said yes. That’s the only word anyone’s ever had from it.” I hesitated. Then I thought of a green ledger with the corners worn through, and a boy sitting on the bottom stair for hours, listening to everything. ”But I know someone who’s interviewed it.”

* * *

Faelan came down to the archive in his nightshirt and his outdoor coat, with the green ledger under his arm, because Mary had gone up to fetch him and he’d refused to come without it.

He stopped in the doorway and looked around the long dry room with the racks to the ceiling and the gray ledgers and the boxes of letters, with his enormous gray eyes very wide. He’d never been inside before. Hardly anyone has.

Then he saw Moth, sitting in the middle of the Long Plan, and forgot about everything else.

”Oh,” he said. ”It’s upset.”

”How can you tell?” said Eleanor.

Faelan looked at her as if she’d asked him how he could tell it was raining.

”Its wings,” he said. ”When it’s happy they go flat. When it’s upset they go up and shake. It sat on my bed like that the night Teo died.” He came over to the drawer, slowly, the way you’d walk up to a cat that doesn’t know you. ”Hello, Moth. It’s Faelan. Can I ask you some questions? You can say no.”

Moth didn’t move.

Then, very slowly, it lifted off the plan, flew once around Faelan’s head, and landed on the end of his nose.

Faelan went cross-eyed looking at it and didn’t seem to mind in the slightest.

”That’s yes,” he said, very carefully, so as not to dislodge it. ”It does that for yes. If it means no, it flies away and comes back. And if it doesn’t know, it goes and sits on something gray.” He opened the ledger, one-handed, to Moth’s page. ”I worked it out in the autumn. It took eleven days.”

Eleanor stared at him.

”Ten years old,” she said faintly.

”Ten and a quarter,” said Faelan, without looking away from his nose. He uncapped his pen. ”Moth. Were you in here before? With Teo?”

Moth stayed on his nose.

”Yes,” said Faelan, and wrote it down. ”Was it at night?”

Yes.

”Did he copy the big map? The one you were sitting on?”

Yes.

”Did he copy all of it?”

Moth lifted off Faelan’s nose. It flew a slow, deliberate circle around the archive, along the racks and over the lamps and past the Castellan’s bent iron head. And then it came back, and landed on the end of his nose again, and sat there with its wings perfectly flat.

Faelan frowned.

”That’s no,” he said slowly. ”And then yes.” He thought about it. ”It means no, but.” He looked at Moth, which was now very close to his eyes. ”Moth. Did you do something?”

Yes.

”Did you...” Faelan stopped. He chewed his lip. Then he asked, very carefully, the way you’d ask a god of not being noticed the only question it could really answer. ”Did you hide something? From Teo? So he wouldn’t see it?”

Moth’s wings, on the end of his nose, went perfectly flat. And then, very faintly, so faintly that I wasn’t sure, for a moment, that I wasn’t imagining it, they began to glow. Pale gold. The color they’d gone in the lower hall on the night Carol named it, when I gave it back its domain.

”Yes,” whispered Faelan. ”That’s a very big yes.”

* * *

”Show us,” said Faelan. ”Please. Show us what you hid.”

Moth lifted off his nose.

It flew down the length of the Long Plan, slowly, low over the paper, through the lamplight. Past the great ring of far ends around the outside, the thirty-one small neat circles with their names and towns and kingdoms. Along one of the long fine lines that ran inward. And it landed in the middle of the sheet, on the dark shape at the hub of the wheel, where it had been sitting when it first came in.

On the lower hall.

It folded its wings flat, and sat there, glowing very faintly gold.

Eleanor was already moving. She took the lamp out of my hand and knelt down at the edge of the drawer and held it low, the way she’d held it before, so that the light came across the paper at a long flat angle and every tiny hole threw its tiny shadow.

She held it over the ring of far ends. Holes. Hundreds of them. Along every circle. Every name.

She moved it inward, along the lines. Holes. Patient rows of them, a hair’s breadth apart, following every stroke of her pen toward the middle of the sheet.

And then she reached the hub.

And the holes stopped.

I saw her see it. I saw her hand go still on the lamp, and her breath stop. I bent down beside her and looked.

The lines ran inward from all thirty-one gates, pricked hole by hole, right up to the edge of the dark shape in the middle. And then, a finger’s width from the six little arches of the lower hall, every single row of holes simply ended. As if whoever had been pricking them had come to the middle of the sheet and looked straight at it and not seen it. As if there was nothing there.

The six arches. The lower hall. The short thick line to the big gate in Concordia. And all around them, in writing so small you needed a glass to read it, the sentences that held them. The master wards. The ones that held the heart of the whole network, so that every other gate on the continent had somewhere to lead.

Not one hole. Not one grain of charcoal. The paper there was as smooth and clean as the day Eleanor laid it down.

”He didn’t copy it,” said Eleanor. Her voice was barely there. ”He copied everything else. Every gate. Every far end. Every word on every plate from here to the sheep-fold in the east. And then he got to the middle and he...” She stopped. ”He didn’t see it.”

”Because Moth didn’t let him,” said Faelan softly.

Moth sat in the middle of the Long Plan, on the six arches, glowing.

”It was inside him,” I said. I was working it out as I said it. ”Its whole power. Not being noticed. That’s how Teo walked past the Castellan six nights running. That’s how he sat in here with a needle and a candle and nobody ever knew.” I looked at the little gray god in the middle of the map. ”But it’s Moth’s power. Not his. Not Malachar’s. Not whoever put it inside him. And while Teo was sitting here, copying, Moth took a little of it back. Just a little. Just enough to put over the one thing that mattered most. So that Teo looked at the middle of the map, six nights running, and saw nothing there.”

”It hid the house,” said Mary. Her voice wasn’t steady either.

”It hid the house,” I said.

Eleanor put the lamp down on the edge of the drawer very carefully, as though she were afraid she might drop it.

”So they have a map,” she said slowly, ”of thirty-one doors. Every one of them perfectly drawn. Every one of them leading inward.” She looked at the clean smooth paper at the heart of the sheet. ”To nothing. To a blank. A wheel without a hub.” She let out a long breath that was very nearly a laugh. ”They know where every door on the continent is. And they haven’t the faintest idea where any of them go.”

* * *

The Castellan had been standing at the end of the drawer the whole time with its gray book in its hand, very still.

Now it bent down, slowly, until its great iron head was nearly level with the Long Plan, and looked at Moth.

”I wrote Something,” it said. ”Six times. In my own book. And did not see it.” It paused. ”You were there. Inside the something. And you kept my house out of his hands while I was not looking.” Another pause, longer. ”Thank you.”

Moth’s wings lifted, very slightly, and settled again.

”I did not know,” said the Castellan, ”that a thing could be kept safe by not being seen.” It straightened up. ”I have only ever known how to keep things by seeing them.”

”Two kinds of holding,” I said, before I could stop myself.

The Castellan turned its head and looked at me. It didn’t ask what I meant. I think it already knew.

* * *

It was Eleanor who asked. Kneeling on the floor of the archive, with charcoal on her fingertip and her spectacles pushed up into her hair and her eyes very bright.

”Moth,” she said. ”My name is Eleanor Stonehand. I built every gate on this map. I’d like to ask you something. You can say no.” She took a breath. ”I’m going to re-cut the middle. All of it. Every word of the master wards, deeper and stronger than they’ve ever been, so that even if someone has my map, and even if they work out how to make another key from it, the heart of it won’t open to anyone but me.” She swallowed. ”And when I’ve done it, I’d like you to sit on it. Here. On this sheet. In the middle. The way you were sitting when we came in. So that if anyone ever comes into this room again, the way Teo did, and looks at this plan, they’ll see everything except the one thing that matters.” She paused. ”Not because you have to. Because I’m asking. Would you keep the middle? For us?”

Moth didn’t move for a long moment.

Then it lifted off the six little arches, and flew across the drawer, and landed, very lightly, on the end of Eleanor Stonehand’s nose.

Eleanor went cross-eyed.

”That’s yes,” said Faelan, delighted, and wrote it down.

* * *

Faelan finished Moth’s page that night, at the scrubbed table in the little kitchen, with his tongue between his teeth and the lamp pulled close. I watched him do it. He’d left the second question blank since the autumn.

WHAT DO YOU DO?

He looked at it for a long time. Then, in his enormous, careful capitals, he wrote:

IT HIDES THE MIDDLE. SO NOBODY CAN TAKE IT.

And underneath, smaller:

(Eleanor asked. It said yes.)

Mary wrote it in the black Council book too, at six the next morning, under the entry for Coldbrook, and the key, and Oskar Bell, aged six.

The Long Plan. Copied by Teo in the summer, six nights, all but the middle. The middle hidden by Moth. They have the doors. They do not have the house.

And under that, in her own neat hand, because my father was still asleep:

Moth. Archive. Asked to keep the middle. Said yes.

When my father came down at seven and read it, he didn’t say anything for a long time. He just sat at the scrubbed table with his coffee going cold and his thumb resting on the line, the way you’d rest your thumb on a sleeping bird to feel its heart.

Then he looked up at Faelan, who was eating porridge at the end of the bench with the green ledger open beside his bowl.

”Ten,” he said.

”And a quarter,” said Faelan, through his porridge.

My father put his head down on the table and laughed until Helena had to take his coffee away.
